Because these types of characters are foils to the mains or play an antagonistic role against them. They stand for things that are against the values the main characters hold, in many cases they have wronged them directly.

So from that, if you have one as your fav the two options are: Accept the character as is for the role they play in the story OR not.

The loudest voices are the ones who don't. They can't change the fact the characters are already put in conflict, the only way to absolve their fav of their role as "the bad guy" is to attack the protagonist.

I say the only way because even lukewarm takes like "everyone was in the wrong/nobody was in the wrong" is still a disservice to the actual situation. You have to lift someone up or lower someone down if you want both parties to be at the same level.

I've seen this scene shared around for people to feel bad for Feng Xin and say it's sooo sad and tragic that Xie Lian trusts Hua Cheng more than him now etc. When I just see Hualian and think good for them! Xie Lian found a close friend that he can trust after years alone and Hua Cheng is obviously happy to be that person.

I do not think it's tragic that someone you broke relations with has moved on and is happy. On the other hand, I want what Feng Xin is smoking because it is an unparalleled level of delusional for him to think Xie Lian was going to chose him over Hua Cheng. 😭
