Blessed to share a toast with my brand ambassador team at our holiday party this year. Last year, we had to cancel our party, because I learned the morning of the dinner that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. But God...My health has since been restored and the company never ever missed a beat. I couldn't have done it without this incredible team of women! People always ask how I knew/found out. I found a lump in my chest in like July/August of 2015 while showering. I thought it was nothing or something having to do with hormones or maybe a cyst. I kept waiting for it to go away. It never did, but at times I did think it was getting smaller. . . Finally after three or four months of being in denial, I made an appointment with my obgyn, but didn't tell them what it was for. I was toldd that I had to wait three weeks to see a doctor, but thanks to @noirebelle and @lorawhitticker I called back and said I had a lump in my chest and needed to see my doctor immediately . Once I had a chance to see the doctor, she did a physical exam and concluded that it was most likely nothing given that it was a soft mobile mass, my age (36) and family history. So I'm a day late. Okay, it's breast cancer month. This year, I had breast cancer. . I don't want to be "cancer girl", but I do want to educate and inspire women to take action when it comes to their bodies. Sometimes we want to move on from the things that hurt us instead of unpacking them and sitting with our feelings, because no one wants to remember the sad times. Yes, this is emotional for me. . So, I hope that a little insight into my journey may help someone who is dealing with breast cancer (or any kind of challenge) now or in the future. So, here we go. Raw. Real stuff. Seven years ago, I was "the Brand Ambassador" and on my feet literally every weekend selling books, t-shirts and shea butter at festivals and out of the trunk of my Ford Escape truck. It seems like just yesterday we were struggling to complete all the paperwork and navigate the Whole Foods ingredient standards, but we did it. . . Shout out to my amazing assistant Kristin for figuring things out and keeping at it, even when we just didn't have a clue. As I always tell my team, "figure it out".
