the gyrfalcon (falco rusticolus) has many variations in color; they are often categorized into four groups, or ‘morphs’ - silver, brown, black, and white. white is the rarest, and is typically seen in snowy habitats where it can assist the falcon in camouflaging itself. the gyrfalcon is also the world’s largest falcon, and preys upon small mammals, birds, and reptiles, occasionally eating carrion.

A railroad worm is a larviform female adult of a beetle of the genus Phrixothrix, characterized by the possession of two different colors of bioluminescence. Railroad worms “switch off” their yellow/green bioluminescence when hunting for millipedes, leaving only their red glow, which millipedes cannot see. The bottom image shows an adult male Phrixothrix beetle.

Bug of the Day - Arachtober!

Took me a while to figure out what this pair of harvestmen were doing, but now I realize that the male (left) is using his jumper cables to restart the female (she must have left her headlights on all night again while she was hunting for earwigs).
