A winsome song for a lonely dove Breathes its windy words through The thick tangle of trees. Fleeting, floating, and full of feverish folly The blowy breeze sings the sirens lullaby. Heedless to the words, lured by the tune, The dove flies blindly. Whirling, winding, wheeling into the world at hand.
Scar - noun, verb, - scarred, scarring - noun. 1. Mark left by wound, etc. - verb. 2. Mark with a scar.
Do you remember this scar? We were savagely claiming space on the papasan chair and it tipped. My shoulder scratched against the sharp point of a very tiny nail. The scar is barely visible now but I can still trace the white curve with my eye.
What about this one? Do you remember this scar? I was trying so hard to impress you and “be cool” that when my shin banged against the rusted metal of the twisted chain link I hardly flinched. It wasn’t until you noticed the blood running down my leg, staining my sock a lusty red that I even knew I hurt myself. That wound punctured deep.
I have others too. Do you recall the scar I have from when my dog bit me? Or where I caught my nose on a rake? Or where I decided to color my scab gray with a pencil, and when it healed the lead was embedded forever into the fabric of my shell?
The worst scars though are the ones that can’t be seen. They are rough and immovable- structures stuck in the rigid tissue of my hidden heart. Do you remember these scars? The deep gash on the lower left hand of my soul never quite healed right. It was years before I could flex that joint again. What about this one on the right? This one is like a case of arthritis, it seems to flare up and pain me once in a while. I take an extra strength Aleve. It seems to help.
Really though, I am tough and these scars are old… Just tactile reminders of that pain that once was and the battles fought. I do wonder though - when I’m old will my body and soul be one big scar?

“I’m in love with people’s hands and the way they clench their fists and the way their fingertips lightly press down onto piano keys or thighs. Calloused fingers or dainty fingers. Hands writing poems or memos or parking tickets. Hands writing futures. To me, every crease on the palm is a love line.”

What I see in the morning...
We are torn between nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known.
Carson McCullers (via quotethat)
But then she had always preferred the night to the day. Moonlight fell directly over her bed in the summer. She lay naked in it for hours before falling asleep, wondering what its rays would do to her skin, her hair, her eyes, and then deeper, to her feelings.
