After they abstracted, the programmers left their abstracted forms to create a new space where they had more freedoms to what they could do compared to what was available to them in the circus. They could conjure things and eventually made a small world that was theirs to live in. Though some tasks took much more than just imagination to conjure, so they built a system where they could code similar to how they did in the macroverse. Eventually they would make their own consoles which look like keyboards and other navigation tools that take a very complex/futuristic appearance.
Each of their consoles can be customized to work for them, though by default they look like keyboards. Its been fun creating different ways that the abstracted characters use their consoles in the au.
Spike likes the comfort of using a game controller and sometimes multitasks between coding and playing games. For some tasks he can switch back to a default keyboard when he needs to. Rattie likes doing design so her console takes inspiration from different graphic design and art tools. In the corner i added what i thought queenie's console would look like, though i don't have many ideas yet, i thought it would be cute if she made little butterfly helpers coded to help her with a few tasks while she does a few of her own.
You should be able to listen to a full album without looking at your phone. You should be able to watch a 3 hour film from beginning to end without checking social media. If you can't do this, you need to start training your attention span as if it were a physical muscle. I don't experience boredom or restlessness because I've trained my brain to not be dependent on quick stimuli and dopamine hits. If you can't chill on a park bench while waiting for a friend with just your imagination to keep you company, you need to learn how to do it ASAP because one day we may not have access to the internet.

When I made this comic, the Wikipedia page for “woodlouse” had a really long “common names” section. In early 2023, somebody pruned the section with the reasoning that Wikipedia “isn’t Urban Dictionary” and most of the names were “unsourcable”, but the older version of the article is still accessible here.
Here’s the list taken from that version of the article:
