sparknotes version:
- grew up in the foster care system, bounced from house to house
- repeatedly being tossed around really messed with her self worth and sense of self in general
- developed lots of defense mechanisms, most of which unhealthy.
- She falls back on self sabotaging quite a bit, essentially ruining anything good for herself before it’s ripped away from her. at least here, it’s “in her control” rather than feeling like her world could be ripped from underneath her at any second
- when she was thirteen, she was placed with the Petrova’s, who actually showed her the compassion and care that she so desperately needed and longed for. she tested them a lot since she felt like it was too good to be true.
- slowly but surely she let them in, but in a two steps forward one step back kind of way. when she was 14, they officially adopted her
- fast forward a bit, and YIKES her birth father found her and reached out to her! as one could imagine, this sparked a lot of overwhelming emotions in Thalia, anger being a very predominant one... but curiosity won, and she agreed to talk with him.
- he said all the right things and gained her trust within a few minutes... but every other time they spoke, he wanted money.
- eventually she literally had nothing left to give him, which was when he suggested taking something from her adoptive parents since they were so well off financially.
- This is when Thalia drew the line, but he just broke in their house and took what any valuable looking thing he could
PRESENT / MISC
- thalia is VERY private, and likely will not speak about her childhood at all. if she had her way, no one would know she was even adopted, and that she just always was able to live in a life of luxory.
- she really doesn’t care who’s a private school student and who isn’t, but she may act like she does just to cover her tracks
- She’ll make acquaintances with just about anyone, but it takes a lot for her to consider you a genuine friend. She definitely has quite a few trust issues
- if you’re friends with her, expect lots of random texts, especially in the middle of the night
- is always up for an adventure, this girl will do anything to keep herself from being trapped in her own head
WANTED CONNECTIONS:
- confidant -- someone thalia actually TRUSTS ( a bizarre concept, I know ) this could develop overtime, or we can plot out how these two became close.
- Tutor/study buddies -- essentially someone to keep thalia on track academically
- Bad influence -- where they just kinda enable each other and feed off of their bad habits
- Good Influence -- opposite of above
- art buddies -- someone to keep her company as they work on projects until 3am
- ex’s -- ex friends or ex romantic partners ! both can make for glorious angst
that’s about all I got for now, but I’m open to just about anything!!
Fable felt her face drop and it was almost as if the words would have caused more damage than they should have. “I-I..” She managed to get out feeling her eyes water as she looked down. She didn’t want to know how fictitious her books were. “Just go away.”
“Oh--” Thalia hadn’t meant to let out the audible reaction, but she was just so caught off guard from how quickly her words seemed to have affected Fable. Thalia definitely spoke without thinking quite a few times and was more blunt than what was desired... she was a lot of things, but cruel wasn’t one of them. She’d never intentionally go out of her way to kick someone when they were already down, so to see tears threatening to fall from Fable’s eyes, she suddenly felt like the biggest piece of shit to ever walk the earth. “Shit, I’m.. I’m sorry, I- I can go... if you really want that, I’m just... Look, you don’t have to listen to me, okay? I’m just bitter, probably because no one will give me the time of day, super embarrassing, I know.” It wasn’t entirely true, but if laughing at her expense would be helpful, so be it.
she comes to the realization that the youngest petrova didn’t plan on leaving anytime soon. ❝ come in. ❞ she says, quite annoyed but she did her best to sound almost pleasing . if cordelia could only look at herself and see that the same way she was acting towards thalia; the venom so lethal. she was acting just like her mother, bitter to the end. ❝ if you know dad at all , he would say that should have been done yesterday. ❞ the matriarch of the petrova family was definitely her father, he raised them to be better than everyone and to make sure no one could do what they did. ❝ and by the way I don’t think lying again is going to get you any pointers from mom ❞ &. me …. but delia didn’t say that, she had already spoken about the incident too much and she had promised her father that she would not bring it up again.
“Thank you,” Thalia said with dramatic emphasis as she stepped in the room. “Yeah well... it wouldn’t be out of character for me to disappoint, right?” She asked, looking up from the ground to her sister almost as though she was expecting an honest answer. “Well, y’know... the point of a lie is kinda for other people to not know it’s a lie. So what she doesn’t know can’t hurt her. Honestly I want to be at that dinner just as much as you want me there, so it’s a win win for everyone. Like, this literally may be the only thing we aren’t arguing about, so can we just please not start now?”
THALIA HAD SEEN CORI be cold , cruel even , but she’d never been the target of her anger . there was a part of cori that longed to accept her answer as enough , thalia was alive and so was she , that could be all that mattered ( right? ) they could slip back into a familiar version of the bond that once brought her so much comfort . shoulders stiffening as she shook her head . wrong , “ no i don’t think we can . i can’t - scratch that i won’t drop seven years of anger and pain just because you’re here now . you left , feel free to stay gone . ”
“I left? Are you fucking kidding me, I--” Thalia brought a hand up to her forehead and tried to catch her breath before she said something she’d regret. If it wasn’t her teeth clamped down on her tongue, no doubt harsh words would be spewing out and truly burning what was left of the bridge between them. “I’m sorry I didn’t reach out... But I’m not going to apologize for-” Thalia cut herself off once more and even looked around to see if anyone was in earshot before continuing. “For getting adopted and being apart of an actual family. A lot of shit happened okay, It’s not all about you.”

cordelia simply rolled chocolate hues as she listened the youngest petrovas’s remark. ❝ I have a lot of things in my plate at the moment. ❞ she stays at the door , if the other hadn’t appeared she would have already left but she does her best to tolerate her . she hears the echoing of her fathers words : delia, just put yourself in her shoes , she lost you. her best friend and you lost her too. curse that old man for being right about everything. slipping on the red cardigan, turning to thalia. ❝ dad sent an email about sunday dinner, he expects both of us to be there. ❞ she knew that it wouldn’t be a good thing , a deep breath escapes her brims. ❝ just don’t get in my way &. I’m sure dinner will be fucking lovely ! ❞
“Mhm, looks it,” Thalia remarked sarcastically- as though she was trying to be as irritating as possible. Truthfully, it was just easier when she already felt like she was swimming against the current. If her sister wanted to hate her forever, so be it, at least she was being honest. Her mother could hardly stand to look at her, and her father was just too kind for his own good. The dismay in Cordelia’s voice when she relayed their father’s expectation stung to say the least. Sure Thalia was grateful for the transparency, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t a knife in the gut when it seemed like the thought alone of spending any time with Thalia was enough to trigger a migraine. “Believe it or not, but I actually have a lot on my plate too. I can just say I’m busy. Think Dad will accept three projects due on Monday and an exam Tuesday as an excuse?” It would be a white lie, but honestly she’d take that workload over sitting through a family dinner where the tension could cut like a knife.
the brush disentangle strawberry locks. that go through the brush, finishing up with a touch of her makeup. she grabs her purse and makes her way to the door but is surprised when she sees thalia at the door. ❝ what are you doing here ? ❞ years ago, if anyone were to talk about the two , they were simply inseparable but that all changed , now every time cordelia merely sets her eyes on her sister , she dispells this venom of hatred ❝ so , what happened ? ❞

“It’s lovely to see you too,” Thalia replied with a feigned smile and a sickeningly sweet tone of voice. It wasn’t as though she could really blame her older sister for holding the grudge. Hello, Thalia hadn’t even forgiven herself for everything that happened, why should Cordelia? The hostility almost was refreshing to Thalia... a nice change of pace from the care that her parents still showered her in despite probably wishing they could just kick her to the curb. “Why does something need to have happened? Can’t a girl just say hi to her sister?”
EYEBROWS SHOOTING UP AS she blinked at her . " are you serious ? " her tone even though she felt completely unhinged . " you disappear for seven fucking years thalia and i’m not supposed to ask about it ? i thought you were fucking dead . i thought - " her voice cracked , tears threatening to burst forward , calm down . she said the words to herself as if she could command her voice to steady , will her tears back to their dank attic. " i thought that you’d come back for me . " running a hand through her hair , smoothing everything back into it’s place . " so forgive me if i’m not jumping for joy over this little reunion . "
Okay, maybe comparing the reunion to a murder investigation wasn’t the best course of action... “You can ask, I just --” A heavy sigh fell from her lips, feeling like she was seconds away from ripping her own hair out. “I just don’t know what you want me to say. I’m sorry. Okay? Can we just - drop it now? I’m alive, you’re alive...” She tried to brush past Cori’s last admission because there was no way to defend herself. There wasn’t anything keeping her from coming back to Cori yet she really did just carry on as if Cori hadn’t the sole person getting her through each day. What a way to return to favor, to pretend like she never had existed.
“How do you know that the spirits and demon’s won’t be bad though? I think you would need experience around different ones to make a final decision on all that.” Teddy wasn’t into horror movies that much because the plot line was usually random, and it painted things out in bad lights. Teddy didn’t really trust supernatural programmes either. Teddy crossed his arms over his chest as Thalia mentioned that she had a selection of energy drinks if he couldn’t sleep in the future. “Who you rooming with? Do I really want to wake you up during the early hours in the morning if I can’t sleep?” he chuckled.
“I mean, sure - but the same exact thing can be said about people in general, forget anything supernatural. You just never know until you actually talk to them and meet them,” Thalia reasoned. “And even then you don’t know because what if they’re lying.” It was ironic really- the fact that Thalia was preaching how the only way to know if someone’s good or bad would be to know them, yet she would also entertain and join in on other private students ridiculing students who went to the public school. But much to her dismay, she was far more honest around the other public school students - at least when she was talking with them one on one. A slight grimace tainted her expression when he asked who she was rooming with. There’s one way to ruin her friendship with Erin forever. “On second thought... might not be the best idea. Tell you what, though. If you can’t sleep and want one, text me, and I’ll bring it to you. We can just find a place to meet up. And don’t worry about waking me up, I’ll probably be awake already.”
Maya laughed at her friend’s comment. “I feel like if I had majored in electrical engineering, I would be getting a far bigger amount of injuries than what I do at the moment.” Luckily, so far the only risk she faced in college at the moment was scrapping her knees while falling to the floor drunk off her ass. Moving next to Thalia, Maya started walking towards her room, happy with the outcome of her night. “How are your classes going? Did you make a Pixar short already?”
“Fair point,” Thalia said through a giggle. “Feel like I’d electrocute myself at least three times a week,” she joked as she followed Maya. “Classes are going well... No Pixar short unfortunately. Next project is stop motion though, and I got a bit of a jump on it already! Definitely gonna be way out of my comfort zone, but I’m excited. It’s gonna be super creepy though. I mean claymation is always at least a little jarring and unsettling in my eyes, even if the theme isn’t necessarily supposed to be.”
SHE CAN’T HELP BUT search thalia’s face for some sign of the person she knew . is she still there ? was she wiped away by years of shiny new things ? would she still fit in thalia’s world , she didn’t know , more than that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to find out . " is that what we are ? " she muttered , " happy to see each other ? " she wasn’t sure if she could classify the feelings she had as happy , then again cori has never been a person that had an easy time identifying any emotion at all , she could barely tell you if she felt good or bad most times .
“Well, I can’t speak for you, but I think I’d be more happy to see you if it didn’t feel like I had a blinding light shining in my eyes and someone asking me where were you the night of the twenty fifth.” In truth, Thalia wasn’t sure what Cori was expecting her to say. Was there any good thing to say? She left. She probably hurt Cori by doing so, and she continued to hurt her by not reaching out and essentially starting her brand new, shiny and sparkly life. It was selfish, but it wasn’t anything she could change. And now, would they even be able to connect like they once had? They were best friends because they were the only people who truly saw and understood each other, but now Thalia barely even acknowledged that part of her life, including to herself.
QUESTION: why do we mortals love icarus so?
ANSWER: because he flew, darling.
he fell, yes, but first he dared to soar.
we are all trying to learn from him.
