A soft laugh escapes the rogue. "That is a rather...odd question." He leans in and his expression softens. "But even if you were the ugliest worm in this realm, I would still adore you."
it had been some time since Zack had thought back to his old life, so having a steady flow of drinks would help. he could remember it decently enough, at least the more significant parts. he remembered what Hydaelyn had told him, how she had said that it might be possible for him to go back. for a long time, that is what drove Zack to keep going. he knew there were people he left behind. important people to him. but, he had important people here too. like Thancred and the other Scions. would he have to choose between them when the time finally came? whenever that would be. he frowned at the thought, hand unconsciously squeezing Thancred's own. it grounded him enough to bring him back to his present company. 『 ❝ I was part of a special military branch for a company called ShinRa. SOLDIER... that's what they called us. we were special because we could do things a lot of regular soldiers couldn't do. ❞ 』 he paused, downing whatever was left of his drink before lifting his gaze to Thancred's own, reaching up a free hand to point at his own eyes. 『 ❝ you see my eyes... the way they kinda glow? mako energy. our bodies are infused with it... a lot of it. it's what helps give us our strength and durability. ❞ 』 he dropped his gaze again, debating on what to say next or wait and see if Thancred had any questions.
Thancred was patient and attentive, allowing Zack to take as much time as he needed. He would never admit outright to being nervous, but his heart fluttered as he waited, a sort of unspoken anxiety flittering at the edge of his subconscious.
His face betrayed nothing as the other spoke, brows furrowing together as Zack spoke of places unfamiliar to the rogue. Although he was grateful to finally have a name to the strange phenomena behind the knight's glowing eyes, he still had more questions than answers.
"I see," he simply said, taking a moment to process this new information. "And here I thought that maybe it had something to do with the Echo, but this changes things...and with the way this is going, we're going to need a refill."
He downed the rest of his glass and let out a sigh.
"So, you're a special soldier infused with this...mako energy that gives you your strength. Definitely not the weirdest thing I have heard thus far. I have questions, undoubtedly, but I want to know what else you remember. More importantly, how does someone like you end up here?"
Zack couldn't stop the soft snicker that left him at Thancred's words. was that so? and he supposed Thancred was considering himself the brooding party member. 『 ❝ oh yeah? and I suppose that's you? I would have thought it would be Estinien or Urianger. ❞ 』 another soft snicker at the slight tease to a couple of their other friends. still, it was helping Zack feel better. even if it was just a little. and for that, he appreciated Thancred's presence even more. maybe it wouldn't be so bad to talk to him about this. at least get it all off his chest. 『 ❝ if that's true and I do have your undivided attention... we're gonna need some more drinks. we're gonna be here a while. ❞ 』 and no, he was not just saying that just so he could keep Thancred to himself. nonsense. 『 ❝ you don't know much about me, do you? at least in regards to how I got here. ❞ 』 he let the comment hang in the air for a moment or two, taking another drink, before he sighed and slumped a little in his seat. 『 ❝ I think I died... or almost died... I just remember a lot of pain and the feeling of rain... I don't know where I was or if I was with anyone... I just remember that I had been trying to protect something. ❞ 』
"Oh, I never said it was me. I merely said we only have room for one, and I say that Estinien fills that role quite well." Another laugh escaped, this time a bit more warm and hearty.
The hand holding Zack moved slightly to slip callused fingers into his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "As I stated before, I have nowhere else to be. I can let the barkeep know to keep the drinks flowing...at a steady pace of course." They were more for Zack than Thancred as it was clear that whatever was bothering the knight was deep and profound.
The rogue pursed his lips in thought - he recalled a point where he tried to gather as much information about his companion as he could, but no one could ascertain where he had come from, not even friends or family to speak of. He simply showed up in Gridania one day, almost as if he fell from the sky.
"Do you remember anything of your life before?" he asked, voice steady as though he is always ready to hear some bitter truth. "Anything that might be of significance? Or even insignificant..."
『 ❝ mm... well... maybe I don't mind that right now. ❞ 』 it was nice to know that Thancred could relate to what Zack was going through, not that that made it a good thing. but it was just nice to know that he wasn't alone. he knew he could tell his friends his problems, that they would be willing to be there for him and support him, but he was just too damn stubborn. the touch of a shoulder against his own was met with a light nudge from Zack in return, savoring the warmth that came from Thancred's closeness. it was hard to remain upset when he had the rogue there next to him. 『 ❝ running away from something, huh? well... you might not be wrong. maybe I have been running away... ❞ 』 he hummed thoughtfully, taking another swig of his drink and tipping his head back to look up. he only looked down again at the other's touch. 『 ❝ while I appreciate that, Thancred... I really don't want to put you through that. ❞ 』 he'd been through so much, he wasn't even sure if he could explain it, let alone if Thancred would understand. 『 ❝ there is... a lot after all. ❞ 』
"Last I checked, there's only enough room for one brooding party member," Thancred teased, attempting a small laugh but it died quickly. He dared to lean in closer, lowering his voice even more to almost a whisper.
"It's going to take much more than that to scare me away. You gravely underestimate how much I can tolerate. Plus, I have no pressing matters currently, so I am yours for as long as you need."
He pulled back to take another swig from his glass, already debating if he was about to have another.
"I understand if you're not ready. I would never want to force the issue...but you do not have to bottle up such feelings around me. I want to help, but I cannot do so until you tell me the things that plague your mind. That is what I do for the people I love."
Zack gave just the slightest start when he felt the presence of another, blinking and breaking from his thoughts when a glass was set in front of him. he regarded it for a moment or two before he shifted, straightening in his seat and moving to wrap his fingers around it. a moment later, he brought the glass to his lips and took a long swig, turning to Thancred only after doing so. he thought about making up an excuse, pretending that he hadn't said what he said. but he thought better of it. this was Thancred, he could open up to Thancred. he trusted him. 『 ❝ heard that, did you? ❞ 』 he spoke quietly, lips curving into a sad smile as he stared at the glass in front of him. 『 ❝ easier said than done... I've been so caught up in other people that sometimes I forget what it feels like to listen to myself. ❞ 』
The rogue's expression softened. "I hear everything, Zack...whether I want to or not."
He took a swig from his own glass, a gentle burn going down his throat is help distract from the negative thoughts. He leaned in a bit closer, his shoulder touching the other.
"It's so easy to get wrapped up in everything else that you neglect yourself. If I didn't know any better, I would say that you are trying to run away from something."
It was clear that he spoke from experience, years spent trying to make up for past mistakes that he lost sight of what was most important to him.
He lifted a hand and gently placed it upon Zack's wrist. "Allow me to shoulder some of that burden. 'Tis the least I can do..."
『 ❝ I spend so much time tryin' to fix everyone else's problems... I forget about my own. and then I start wondering if I'm even good enough to have that. ❞ 』 he was murmuring to himself, believing he was alone, thinking he was safe. he'd never openly admit this out loud to anyone if he could help it.
Making barely a sound, Thancred effortlessly slipped next to Zack, setting down a glass of something before the dark knight.
"Don't do that to yourself," he murmured, low enough so that only the other could hear. "Believe me, I have been down that road before... Do not think yourself selfish for looking after yourself once in a while. And if you ever need help, you are not alone."

Thancred smiles as he listens, attempting to contain his emotions even as he feels his heart fluttering in his chest. He then lifts his hand to cradle Zack's face, his forehead resting against the dark knight's in a sign of affection.
"Words are not needed, love," he replies softly, thumbs brushing along the other's cheekbones. "Not to say that I know how you feel, but rather you never need to say as such. The look in your eyes is enough for me."
He leans in to steal a kiss, warm and firm and loving.
"I love you, Zack. Never forget that."
"I am very glad to have you in my life, and honoured to be able to stand by your side, for as long as you'll have me."

Thancred's expression softens at her words, silver eyes gleaming with something akin to fondness.
"You are far too kind," he replies softly. "In fact, I should be telling you as such. Nonetheless, I am grateful... Thank you for watching my back. And should you need anything, I am only a call away."

Thancred's eyes go wide at first, seemingly shocked by her forwardness. He then relaxes, a soft laugh slipping through his lips.
"I quite admire your boldness, my lady. You'd be happy to know that the feeling is wholly mutual."

The corner of Thancred's lips turn upward, silver eyes glinting as he sweeps his gaze over the knight. "I must say that the feeling is quite mutual. In fact..."
He takes a step closer, a little bolder. "If you are offering, I wouldn't dare refuse."
