The fact that Andrew and Neil don't fit into the mainstream definition of soft doesn't mean they can't be their own versions of it. They can and they are tender with each other, they care.

I get why people get pissed at things that are too much or seem too out of character, but if you come look me in the eye and tell me “they can never be soft, they're too traumatized” then I'm sorry but you are wrong. They can have trauma and STILL be their own version of soft with each other. They are in the books: Andrew fucking kissed Neil's hip before a blowjob for God's sake.

Maybe they will never say I love you or use nicknames, and you are allowed to get a little pissy about those interpretations of the characters in the fandom but I don't think we can negate the fact that they ARE domestic in their own little ways.

And you know what? They fucking deserve it. They've earned their right to be soft and to love each other in peace and silence.
