These are the eighteen provinces/municipals of Arendelle.

I found a hint on reddit and copied all coat of arms together out of the screencaps of Frozen and OFA. Sorry for the bad quality but unfortunately it did not get better.

Now we only need to know what the names of these provinces/municipals are and where in Arendelle they are.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I figured it out on my own.

Arendelle is the capital (own province) and the other provinces are corresponding to Norway’s 18 Fylker (= province) which are: Akershus, Aust-Agder, Buskerud, Finnmark, Hedmark, Hordaland, Møre og Romsdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Nordland, Oppland, Rogaland, Sogn og Fjordane, Sør-Trøndelag, Telemark, Troms, Vest-Agder, Vestfold, Østfold.

I’ve also checked the original coat of arms in comparison to these in Frozen. They are different - of course - but there are some similarities in colour and shape. 

The makers of Frozen have obviously thought of everything. But that also clarifies another question, how big the kingdom of Arendelle actually is. Now we know. Arendelle covers the whole area of Norway and the castle in the film with the place around it corresponds to the capital and represents its own province.

I have to reblog myself now because there is more to tell about this topic and of course I wanted to let you know.

I did further research on Wikipedia and found out the following, which has many parallels to the film. It should be known that the castle Arendelle or the name is based on the real place “Arendal”. It is located in Norway in the province Aust-Agder (translated East-Agder) and belongs to the district Sørlandet. Norway is also known as the “Land of the trolls and the snow”. Arendal is the largest of 15 municipalities and each has its own coat of arms. It has its own lighthouse, which can only be reached by boat (the one from “Love is an Open Door”). It has a twin city in Denmark (the “southern islands”) and Iceland…the town of Selfoss there is not far from Reynisfjara Beach, and we already know it from the Frozen II trailer with the black pebbles on the beach.

This province Aust-Agder was once called only “Agder” and was in the Viking Age a small kingdom called Agðir. Do you notice any similarities here? The king in Frozen became known as Agnarr, or as many of you call him Agdar. A historical king in this ancient province was coincidentally called “Harald Agderking”. Well? Agder = King = Agdar in Frozen.

There is certainly more to discover, but it will take a lot of time. Maybe you will notice something somewhere.

Great find! Adding to the whole coat of arms design, they might be more grounded in reality than they seem. While the coats of arms of the provinces/counties themselves aren’t really that similar, some of the municipalities inside those provinces share really similar designs.

For example, while Møre og Romsdal is the province, there’s a municipality inside it (the most important region of each county, inside the Frozen universe of course) that represents the province, in this case, Rauma. It’s just an idea and of course the makers didn’t make a carbon copy of today’s Norway, but the coats of arms speak for themselves… Here’s an image with the best matching municipalities I could find in each province/county. Some are more similar, some are less, but still interesting nevertheless:

Some things to note, while Arendal belongs to Aust-Agder, in the Frozen universe it is the capital, so as you said it is its own province.

I’m pretty sure the creators of Frozen were at least heavily inspired by those coats of arms, and who knows, maybe the municipalities themselves actually exist in-universe with a slight name change or something.

We’re only finding out recently that a lot of animals have colors and patterns that we cannot see because they’re outside of our visual range. It calls to attention how much of the world we can’t experience because our senses are limited. When we shine UV lights on them, they glow pink or blue, but these are the colors that we CAN see…. they could be a bunch of different colors, which we SEE as all pink. It’s also interesting to consider that most of these animals are not aware of having glowing patches on their bodies…. isn’t it also possible that we have skin or hair patterns that were not aware of? . . (There is actually some research out there to support the idea that our own skin fluoresces as well and that there are gender differences in the pattern and glow.) Humans do have invisible stripes!  They’re called Blaschko’s Lines, formed as  skin cells divide at the embryonic stage.  Normally we can’t see them at all, though certain skin conditions follow those same lines. 

Apparently this is roughly what we’d look like, if our eyes could see in a different spectrum:

Dunno about you, but I want to use this in a story someday.  Aliens can see our stripes and we can’t!  Magical transformations follow Blaschko’s Lines!  A subtle sign of lycanthropy is darker hair there!  Wizards are bald with that cool spiral on their heads!

Speculative fiction is so much more fun when you can speculate about something strange but true.
