Elsa powers appreciation (part 1 of 3) - Creating things from ice/snow
Happy 7th Anniversary, Frozen (1)!
I’ve wanted to do this post for a long time. This post is entirely original, I have not read posts like this or browsed the Frozen wiki (I am assuming there’s an entry there on Elsa’s powers)
I’ve written down every single occurrence of Elsa’s powers in the 2 movies and 2 shorts and analyzed that long list in order to create this post. I won’t bore you with that list unless you want to see it.
I believe that we can categorize Elsa’s powers into 3 main groups: 1. Creating things from ice/snow; 2. Freezing (and the opposite, melting) and 3. Movement/kinetic energy (and the opposite, not moving in situations where movement is expected) I will post 3 separate posts so as to keep each post to a readable length.
Creating things from ice/snow
- with 2 exceptions, the first being light (as in, glowing, bright light). The second is her dresses which start as ice, but become cloth permanently. Let’s get started!
1. Small objects
From L to R: small snowball, ice bowtie for Olaf, ice table, snow teddy bear
2. Small but very intricate objects
The first 3 are cake toppers from Frozen Fever for Anna’s birthday. Notably, Elsa makes each of them in milliseconds, she is that fast! Note the beautiful detail. I have always wanted to own a figurine of #2. In the rightmost pic, is the ice sextant that she made for the little girl. Some in the fandom believe that this is a fully functional sextant with moving parts, signifying that our Queen has mechanical knowledge of the workings and tiny parts of a nautical sextant! I believe so!
3. HUGE structures
1st row: the beautiful ice staircase that she makes. She was testing out her powers for the first time to make something so big and beautiful, and the staircase starts as snow and as she steps on it, re-forms into beautiful chiseled ice. Amazingly she does this as she is running, her powers are just so fast! Next to the stairs are 2 images of the ice castle, which needs no explanation - it is HUGE, has multiple stories, inner chandeliers and fountains, stairs, doors etc
2nd row: the ice “ramp” she makes to try to run over the crashing waves of the Dark Sea. Next to it: the humongous ice wall she (and Nokk) made to stop the tsunami tidal wave from destroying the castle. This could arguably be larger than the ice castle? Again, the speed with which she creates the “ramp” and the wall is breathtaking. She also demonstrates that she can dissolve and remove what she has created when she does that to the ice wall.
4. Light
Elsa’s magic is always accompanied by bright light, but sometimes her icy creations stay lit up. On the leftmost, is the icy trail she left as the royal family galloped to the Trolls. This trail led to Kristoff finding the trolls! Fate.
Secondly, we have the trail “markings” that she made to guide everybody back home after finding Olaf in OFA. In OFA we also have the giant ice Christmas tree, which glows from its own core. This tree also sends a burst of light into the surrounding trees and they glow with tiny crystals of light, which some have said is a foreshadowing of Frozen 2′s ice crystals.
In the last screencap, we have the scene in the forest where the girls discover and acknowledge their Northuldran roots. (Director Chris Buck said that the glowing light comes from Elsa in the ITU documentary - I used to think it was Gale but if Buck said it, it’s canon)
5. Living creations
One of Elsa’s most amazing, if not THE most amazing of her powers, is her ability to create sentient life! Think about it! Arendelle has no need for an army since she can make an army of Marshmallows! On a more thought provoking note, since she brought Olaf back to life because “water has memory”, can she create facsimiles of humans based on the same principle? Can she make copies of herself to do menial tasks?
a. Olaf
I have no screencaps for Olaf, because, who needs them? Haha. What can Olaf do? Let’s see - he has a personality, a sense of humour, intelligence, a soul, musical ability, the ability to separate and control his parts independently and re-form his parts together, his wooden arms can move (how does THAT work?) and he has a “digestive” system of sorts! Olaf can also make his ice glow slightly (he does this in his recap of F1 when acting out the part about Anna freezing to death) and he can breathe out an icy breath (in the same scene).
b. Marshmallow
As an entity independent from Elsa, I’m amazed that Marshmallow can control his own form, in a “Hulk”-like way. When he is angered or threatened, he is able to grow 1) spikes from his knees (compare 1st and 2nd screencaps) and 2) sharp teeth and spikes from his back! The last screencap shows that he can retract the teeth and spikes at will too!
I didn’t have a screencap for it, but he can also roar a powerful icy breath (which he does at Kristoff and Anna)
c. Snowgies
The snowgies are amazingly able to work as a team. Look on the left - they have formed a “dome” and a number of them have “shot” themselves outwards like fireworks. And before this, they had been teaming up to oppose Kristoff and try to steal the cake. On the right, they are amazingly able to SPELL. Think about it! Even Olaf can’t spell at this point and these snowgies are like 5 seconds old!
6. Dress transformations
If we break it down, during Let It Go, Elsa is able to transform existing cloth (her coronation gown) into a different color and fabric entirely. Next, she forms a cape out of ice - but as I alluded to earlier, the icy cape turns into cloth. This is pretty mind boggling. We’re still not done with the cape - she makes snowflakes fly onto the cape and become incorporated into the cape.
In Frozen Fever - Elsa transforms her blue gown into a green gown. She then does something PRETTY amazing - she takes Stargazer lilies from the vase and incorporates them into her cape! She has just turned an organic flower into fabric! (Some have wondered if she could do this to her enemies!! Turn them into “paintings”!!)
For Anna’s dress - she changes the color of the sunflowers on Anna’s skirt and bolero from a dull yellow to a bright golden. She also causes 1 sunflower from the vase to fly and attach itself to Anna’s donut hair. (Elsa herself has affixed 1 lily to the right side of her hair) Note also that she is exhibiting her “kinetic” powers (telekinesis) here by making the flowers fly.
I’m not counting the Ahtohallan dress transformation here as I think that one is purely Ahtohallan magic.
7. Extracting memories from water
This power was introduced in Frozen 2 and some believe it is the 5th spirit’s power. From left to right: memories from Gale’s tornado that move and emit sound; stationary ice statues, also extracted from Gale’s tornado; the horrifying image of the parents at the point of their death - extracted from water in the ship and lastly, an enormous number of memories from Ahtohallan, which move and talk.
8. Special mention - the horse “bridle” and “reins” she uses to tame the Nokk
I have separated this from the rest because I find it amazing. Prior to this, she has never made something out of ice that is so flexible and strong. The bridle magically affixes itself to the Nokk despite his thrashing about; the reins are flexible and yet strong enough to bear her whole weight. (Arguably - she is also using some of her kinetic powers here to move her body - wait for post #3)
I like to think that she’s almost like Peter Parker AKA Spider-man! She can shoot out flexible, sticky “string” and can swing from it!

Sharing my experiments to slow down this bouncy scene but keep the animation smooth.
Video frame rate increased 3x to 72fps using DAIM method (Google Colab)
It plays twice, first at 60% speed and second at 50%.

I made a gif too - not quite sure what I did wrong in PS but it’s extra slow. Lol. I’m still learning.
I figured it out! Gifs cannot be set at 0.01s as most browsers will ignore such values and default to slower animation speed.
Here is the 72fps gif at 0.02s delay. (which works out to 66% speed) isn’t it glorious!
5th Spirit Elsa’s chest is not as small as you might think
This post is my attempt to correct a misconception that 5th spirit Elsa’s boobs are much smaller/flatter than LIG Elsa’s boobs. It all started when I noticed certain shots of 5th spirit Elsa actually having a bustline. (I previously thought she was totally flat in 5th spirit gown) I also had a in-depth discussion with @frozensquishie who is an animator by profession.
Before I start, please hear me out: 1) I do not intend to offend anyone 2) I do agree that 5th spirit Elsa is smaller, I’m trying to show that she’s not THAT small 3) I have not analyzed in detail the Harvest festival gown, nightgown, travel gown and Dark Sea gown; this post will not go into a discussion on those gowns 4) I am not trying to defend anybody in this post (eg Jenn Lee), or defend the movie; I simply want to let my logical meticulous nerd side do some analyzing.
The following contribute to the apparent smallness of Elsa’s boobs in 5th spirit gown:
1) In the majority of shots in F2, 5th spirit Elsa faces the camera frontwards and not sideways. When she faces frontwards, she looks incredibly flat because of points 2, 3 and 4. In the few side profile shots of 5th spirit Elsa, she does have a bust! (see below) In F1, there are many many shots of Elsa from various angles.
2) 5th spirit gown is white and the fabric is velvety and absorbs light. Squishie says that white is quite difficult to light correctly in 3D animation. The sleeves of the gown are also solid white and thus there is less contrast between her chest and her arms. There are also a lot of vertical/diagonal lines on the bodice which “camouflage” the curves underneath (imagine how Zebras hide in the grass from predators). In F1, the gown is covered with sequins all over her breasts and these pick up light very easily and shows us her contours and curves. The sleeves of the LIG gown are also a contrasting translucent light blue.
3) 5th spirit gown has no cleavage at all. To put it more correctly, the 3D model of Elsa underneath the 5th spirit gown has no cleavage at all. So yes, this is probably a deliberate attempt to desexualize Elsa on the part of the filmmakers. Needless to say, F1 LIG Elsa model has really obvious cleavage. And the LIG gown has a bust enhancing corset.
4) The F1 LIG gown has a sweetheart neckline:
This accentuates the bust and cleavage. Whereas the 5th spirit gown’s neckline is a convex line (I can’t find a name for this?) and this de-accentuates the cleavage.
5) The power of our mind. In F1, the plot events make us see LIG Elsa as sexiness unleashed (and she IS sexy!!!) whereas in F2 the plot makes us see Elsa as a “spirit” and less sexy.
6) We see what we want to see. We remember what we want to remember. Because we are inundated with lots of big booby shots in F1 we fail to see/remember the moments that she looks flat in F1 (yes, there are such moments!! Keep reading) And for the big booby shots we don’t take into account the effect of her body angle and camera angle (cos we are mesmerized…spellbound…) Conversely, we fail to notice when she has a bust in 5th spirit gown because there are few of them and they are quite short. I have collected as many of these moments as I could.
Now for the evidence.
These 2 gifs show you that when she faces front she appears to have no boobs; when she turns to the side you can see them! The more I stare at the gifs the more magical or sorcerous it seems!!! The boobs appearing and disappearing!

Frozen 2 Alternate Ending
Since I was the one who advocated creating an ending in case we didn’t like the one we got, I’m going to let anyone who wants consider this a canon ending and even use it for fanfiction if they please.
After Anna saves her life and the two reunite Elsa smiles and tells Anna she deserves a reward for all the great work she’s done protecting both herself and Arendelle. She tells Anna to kneel down and she does. Elsa conjures up an ice sword and taps it against each of her shoulders.
“For your bravery, determination, and unwavering devotion to your country, I proclaim thee lady Anna of Arendelle. Henceforth you shall be charged with protecting the land of Arendelle from any threats, magical or otherwise. You shall act as a champion of the people, always looking after their safety, and you shall be my most trusted ally, friend, and advisor. For you have often proven to be wiser than me when it counts.
Anna looks up at Elsa in shock and gets a look of such unabashed joy. She stands back up.
“I accept.”
The two of them lovingly press their foreheads together.
Kristoff watches them and thinks of proposing one more time but seeing the moment between the two he shrugs and smiles before putting the ring back in his pocket.
“Eh, it can wait till we get back to Arendelle.”
Elsa and the Northuldrans decide that the best way to start healing the rift between the peoples of Arendelle and Northuldra is to have their two groups become allies. The Northuldrans agree to share the power of the spirits with the people and bring magic to Arendelle in the hopes that it will both help unify the magical and human worlds but also give the people of Arendelle more respect for nature. The people are astounded by the spirits powers and how they help make their lives better. Anna and Elsa stroll down the streets together Anna now wearing purple and green armor with a crocus pin badge on her chest, a ring on her finger, and a sword by her side and Elsa with her hair down and wearing a long white billowing sorceress-esque robe and a perfect ice replica of her coronation crown on her head.
Anna: This is so crazy. Everything’s changing so much around here.
Elsa shrugs.
Elsa: Well, that’s life. Things are going to keep changing. But no matter what change comes I promise and I mean it this time, we will face them together.
Anna takes her hand and gives it a gentle squeeze.
Anna: Together.
Soo much better than what we got in F2!! Totally believable and would satisfy the fandom. Great job!

My dad was a straight-ticket Democrat, gave money to the ACLU, and left the Catholic church when his local parish prioritized a new, bigger church over hungry parishioners. He was VERY liberal.
He voted for Al Gore in 2000.
In 2004 (when he was 75yo) an injury forced him to spend time at an assisted living facility for rehab. The TVs there were all tuned to Fox News.
All it took was six months.
Upon his release that’s all he watched. He obsessed over Fox. Became convinced liberals were out to destroy HIS America.
From 2004 onwards I watched my liberal dad – the guy who imbued me with my beliefs and values – decline into a ranting, angry, hateful person.
He almost died alone because I told him I simply could NOT stand to hear any more about how Obama was ruining the country. He relented, and I said goodbye to him in 2011 at his hospice, only because we agreed not to discuss “politics”.
Fox News is pure 100% brainwashing. I’ve seen it up close, and it is evil.
You guys will say all of this and then, with absolutely no self awareness, glueing yourselves to the tv when CNN or the Daily Show is on. Like bias, manipulation, fake news, getting most of your news from one source, and one sided arguments only go one way.
My dude, Fox is known to do this. It’s half the reason CNN and the Daily Show went the other way (go back to pre-Fox CNN and Kilborn Daily Show to see what I mean).
Really makes you think when their first big name “anchors” were Tabloid News Show guy, and the guy my conservative grandfather called a “damn bloated windbag” back in the days of talk radio. They actually made this crap a viable thing because all they did was, to once again quote my voted Reagan, Bush, Dole, Bush, McCain grandfather, “sensationalize everything and promote division”.
Funny that, the only problem is people talking bad about something that’s been called Faux News since the goddamn 90s, proving him right.
No oneis arguing that Fox News doesmt do this. Theissue is acknowledging this and then turning around and turning a blind eye to these actions when networks you support do it.
Misquoting the president, putting opinions into what should be objective journalism, spreading straight misinformation, refusing to cover things that make your side look bad, etc. Bad journalism to push an agenda. We had no problem calling out bad journalism and fake news when Fox News was doing it. But suddenly everyone believes journalists can have nothijg but integrity when it comes from grouos you agree with.
It’s the unbelievable double standard of news coverage and how we judge journalists. We didnt have a problem with buas and misinformation in the news. Apparently the issue was only when it came from the republican side. Calling out the same bad behavior on CNN gets you accused of being “alt-right”.

But, imagine disowning your parents over politics… you’d have to be just as brainwashed as you claim them to be.

My uncle is a Fox News contributor and nationally syndicated conservative talk show host. (We have not spoken in years and I doubt we ever will again.)
In private, he openly gloats about how people buy into Fox. It’s all an act. Most of the hosts on there don’t believe anything they spew, it’s just for the views and $$$.
They literally laugh at how stupid their viewers are.
Reblogging for this last comment and also to paraphrase Rev. Deborah Johnson who blew my mind saying canceling people our of your life is not a way to peace. By pushing someone, family or friends, away you just give them less possibility of ever seeing something in a better way. She said the best way to be an ally rn is to keep having conversations with these people.
And I know it’s hard and sometimes seems impossible, but generally people are more misinformed than evil. Eat the rich and the evil ones though, that’s my addition .
I wish I could say that my parents are just misinformed, but no, they have chosen their beliefs and they are responsible for their choices. My sister and I have presented a lot of evidence to them that things are not what they think they are, but they have chosen to close off. My dad would get super angry when I say something that opposes his view. My mum would say she doesn’t want to talk about it when I disagree with her. They have had choices of many media companies, but what have they chosen? Those that fit into their extreme beliefs! My parents would switch to a different TV channel if the news starts to report something that does not align to what is in their heads. My dad has chosen to buy and read the newspaper that’s at the very end of the spectrum. In the end, I have realised that it is not about them being misinformed, it is about them having such big egos that they don’t want their beliefs to be challenged to the slightest. It is pathetic.
Frozen timeline
I have this feeling that events in the movie looks linear, but they are not. I may be totally wrong, but putting them in a little different order makes more sense if we look at time used for travelling between Arendelle and North Mountain by every party involved. But then the movie is less dramatic, I guess.

When I first read this post, my mind couldn’t accept it mainly cos for 6 years I have thought that “Let it go” happened the same night Elsa ran away, like almost immediately. But the more I chewed on it I realised your reasoning is very logical and correct. Plus we now have this map:
showing the relative locations of Arendelle and the North Mountain. (side note: Anna’s hand is beautiful)
Also wanted to add one more screencap (BTW did tumblr previously allow more than 10 images?)
showing that Anna’s horse did come back in the daytime.
(For this next part: the relevant TLDR of super-mam-te-moc’s post is: Elsa took 24h to reach the North mountain; Anna took 24h to reach Oaken’s post and another 24h to reach the North mountain)
Wow. So Elsa didn’t have superhuman speed after all (hahaha). But on a more serious note, poor Elsa had a whole 24 hours of walking to ponder on her current situation? That’s one HUGE build up to her singing Let It Go. Which makes sense…but I want to explore what she was thinking on that 24 hours. She must have wondered if she should go back to the kingdom and apologise. But she must have been ashamed and embarrassed. It was her coronation day! 😥 And worried that she will hurt more people. And above all, she did not know how to unfreeze everything. Wow. Knowing that she had 24h to ponder on abandoning her kingdom makes her internal struggle that much weightier for me; she didn’t do this flippantly. She wrestled for 24h and chose to do this. She decided that it’s the only way out and once she made that choice, her unbridled, powerful side released itself in LIG.
And now, darling Anna. Now I realise even more that Anna really had to persevere to reach Elsa. As u pointed out, she climbed for a whole day bcos she reached the castle closer to sunset.
Meaning that at this point, Anna had been out for 2 nights and 2 days! Oh darling Anna you must have been so exhausted! Her stubborn mind must have been chanting “I love Elsa I love Elsa I love Elsa I love Elsa” like a steam engine gone mad. And it all started from here:

Anna and Elsa both have super human strength and speed! I could never do all they did in a whole week, let alone a few days. Thank goodness they only have to do this arduous exercise and go through hell once every 3 years 😂 Building up energy in between! #ThreeYearCurse
