there's this ridiculously soulmatey line in the phm book when grace is just kinda idly wondering aloud about why human and eridian technology are at such similar phases of development, and without thinking about it much rocky responds "has to be, or you and I would not meet." which he goes on to explain as (paraphrasing here) "if either planet were less advanced then we couldn't have built interstellar ships, but if either were more advanced then we could have dealt with the astrophage problem from home, so we'd have to be at around the same level to both be here, that's the only way it would make sense." what it sounds like though is "oh, that's easy: the two of us had to meet so the history of both of our entire species lined up in preparation to make it possible." what kind of tau-ceti-crossed red-petrova-line-of-fate nonsense is this.

#my favorite part of the book that has me screaming and pissin my pants is the part where they talk about why they hear in the same #range #and they get all introspective about it #the answer rocky gives #is that the sound of objects hitting other objects is the same everywhere #and evolutionarily to escape predators or find prey #any life anywhere would evolve to hear that object hitting frequency #And then grace says that #their thinking speeds are the same because their gravity and thus their movement speeds are about the same #A great scene that shows Grace and Rocky being equally smart #Like rocky came up with the idea that they were evolved from the same microbes #Rocky is a smart smart cookie #I love when they talked about head scratching things like that #bro they were made for each other #end tag

Rocky’s design is @naphelion’s and eridian grace is mine, plus the tattoo ideas are mine. Will probably clean the tats up later to look a lil better.

Rocky is book rocky. He is an introvert and has really bad eyesight.

Ryland is a book eridian. He’s a little lumpy and pointy, to look like a fox face. He is asymmetrical and the ear part of the fox face is a dip in his body. He wears some kind of eridian brown thundershirt full of sonorous material because his lumpy pointy carapace makes sound funnel in only one direction so basically his clothes are eridian “glasses.” He is marbled yellow, orange, white and brown.

Why does rocky have eridian tats? ‘Cause.

Rocky’s ring is rocky and adrian’s wedding band equivalent.

Finally succoming to the PHM brain rot and giving yall my human designs for them.

I had a pretty set idea for Adrian, but rocky was a bit of a struggle. I lwk hate how whenever someone designs them they look so young. Like, these rocks are HUNDREDS of years old.

They are NOT sexy anime men.

Like, I see them (and Adrian) both a theys. But the vibe was kinda femme yk?

This version of Adrian is my personal favorite in terms of shape. I like how the hijabi inspired headwrap kinda forms the fandom given body yk? Like YESSSS giving reall triangular realness

The more masc version is also fun to me, but I still wanted to keep the head wrap in someways. Idk what to do without accidentally being offensive to I compromised with the version first shown, but I also wanted to play around without it.

Any ideas for what to do try would be nice. I wanted to try and get as many variations as possible because I kinda hate how everyone is like, ADRIAN IS FEMALE—NO THEY’RE MALE

So yeah, I tried to make more traditionally ‘masc’, ‘femme’ and ‘androgynous’ designs but realistically I feel like it doesn’t matter because the concept of gender isn’t the same for them.

why is no one talking about the book reunion scene. did you know when grace explains that he’s going to die of starvation, rocky immediately tells him to leave and go back home, that he’ll just keep waiting, that erid might send another ship someday. i’m going crazy. rocky had probably completely accepted his fate and then grace miraculously appeared and gave him back his life and his home. and he was instantly willing to give it all up again just so grace could survive. can anyone hear me. this is insane. i’m insane
