I kindly ask my non-vegan followers to give this short but amazing video a watch. It would really mean a lot to me. Just take a few minutes out of your time to see things from our perspective to get a better understanding of vegans and veganism. Thank you.
This week at YourWildCity.com: an amazing story about plant adaptation.

No you don’t. This is nonsense. Climate change is caused by capitalism, neocolonialism and white supremacy. Do you think that if we turn the lights off more the oil companies will be like, well I guess we won’t burn this gas then? Nonsense.
You want to stop climate change, then join those of us trying to #keepitintheground. Check out if there are any big events happening near you this May at https://breakfree2016.org.

150 years ago, they would have thought you were absurd if you advocated for the end of slavery. 100 years ago, they would have laughed at you for suggesting that women should have the right to vote. 50 years ago, they would object to the idea of African Americans receiving equal rights under the law. 25 years ago they would have called you a pervert if you advocated for gay rights. They laugh at us now for suggesting that animal slavery be ended. Some day they won’t be laughing.

Grocery Stores’ Plant-Based Progression
I don’t believe that all grocery stores, supermarkets, and farmers markets are created equal when it comes to their accommodation of vegan and vegetarian clientele. The progression toward vegetarianism is still slow-moving, and many grocery stores have yet to pick up on the need for vegetarian products, or don’t have enough of a demand for them in general (depending on the area). Fortunately, few grocery stores–even in Georgia!–carry no vegan products whatsoever. (Please note that when I say “products”, I am referring only to the products which serve as an alternative to conventionally non-vegan items, such as cheese, meat, yogurt, milk, and processed foods. Of course, a vast amount of what all grocery stores carry is vegan, as whole plant-foods are a significant part of every food market and are the foundation of a vegan diet.) The grocery stores I tend to shop at and will be discussing today are Kroger, The Fresh Market, and Sprouts Farmers Market.
To be fair, all three of the grocery stores I listed seem to make at least some conscious effort to accommodate their vegetarian and vegan clientele. The purpose of this post isn’t to demonize any one grocery store and accuse them of being unethical or insensitive, but to point out the things certain stores do better than others. We will be much more effective as advocates if we emphasize the things businesses are already doing well, rather than everything we feel they are doing wrong.
I’d like to start with Sprouts, perhaps my favorite of the three. If you read my last blog post about vegan ice cream, you won’t be surprised to hear that one of the first things I do when I visit a new grocery store is search the frozen isles for their ice cream novelties section and admire all of their pints (I may love ice cream a bit more than I thought). Stocking nondairy ice cream is an area in which some grocery stores definitely do better than others, and Sprouts has been my greatest find so far. I’ve provided an image of Sprout’s selection versus Kroger’s to serve as a fair comparison of a more commercialized grocery store and a farmers market.
This particular Kroger actually does a better job than others of its kind at carrying nondairy ice creams (you can see that even with the flavors that are out of stock, there are still quite a few remaining), but it still has a bit less to offer than Sprouts. I can’t help but wonder if Sprouts thought they were carrying more nondairy ice creams than they are, due to the common misconception that Arctic Zero is lactose-free, and therefore automatically nondairy. However, all that lactose-free means is that their products are not sweetened with milk sugar; they still contain whey protein (derived from milk) as well as cream and sometimes egg-white powder. I falsely assumed that Arctic Zero was vegan for quite some time, and was surprised when I learned the truth. Let’s debunk this myth right here, once and for all. Since Arctic Zero does contain animal products, I have circled the products below it, all of which are nondairy–So Delicious is a reliable source for vegan products–and egg-free. While you cannot see them in this image, Sprouts also carries the Almond Dream Bites seen in Kroger’s selection. Not only that, but Sprouts also sells bigger tubs of their So Delicious ice-cream, a product that most stores I’ve been to are lacking. Bigger tubs of ice cream are much more practical for consumption over a longer period of time, or for scooping out of as a topping for birthday cake.
Sprouts’ best features don’t stop in the dessert isle though, as they also have a wonderfully expansive display of nondairy cheeses, sour creams, butters, mayonnaise, cool whips, yogurts, soy proteins, seitan, and meat analogues.
They are the first store I’ve found that carries seitan (a plant-based protein made from vital wheat gluten), a victory for me as I will soon be making a recipe requiring this very ingredient. I’m sensing another post may be coming…
Kroger carries some brand of most of Sprouts’ vegan products, which is notable because many commercialized grocery store chains (Kroger, Publix, Ingles, Piggly Wiggly) do not. Many Krogers even have a separate section of the store designated for natural, organic, vegetarian, gluten-free, and nondairy products, which makes it very easy to locate items.
The Fresh Market, despite my misguided assumption that “fresh” was synonymous with “plant-based”, caters more toward fresh animal-based products than anything else. That’s not to say they don’t carry vegan products–they still have a note-worthy supply of the most basic of vegetarian alternatives (vegetarian meats, plant-based milks, etc.)–they just don’t carry as many as Kroger or Sprouts, or perhaps as much as I’d expected. That is to say, they probably don’t carry seitan.
I intend to visit more grocery stores in the future (Aldi is next on my list!), and you can anticipate a review of them as well when I do.

Dear vegans
Isn’t it amazing to know that no matter what you personally do or do not achieve by the end of your time here on Earth, we have already made a positive change to the world every single day. It’s never too late to grow and become a better person. We are proof that the world can be kind, and I think that’s kinda beautiful.
A brief lesson for writing and talking about conservation
Repeat after me:
Conservators save paper.
Conservationists save trees.
Every time a journalist or press release gets this wrong, it makes me want to scream. Please, help spread the right word about what conservators do!
I’m so baffled at people who are against veganism. Like to me, it was just a blatantly obvious, cut-and-dry decision. I don’t want animals to die. I don’t lose anything by refusing to kill animals. So I’m vegan. That’s it. That’s all there was to it. So why do people so adamantly refuse to accept veganism?
What sort of environmental careers are there?
Increasing population and economic growth issues have created complex environmental problems that impact all aspects of society creating a need for cross-sector interest and collaboration among government, nonprofit and private organizations. Traditional environmental fields of agriculture, natural resource management, pollution abatement and conservation are now expanding to incorporate innovative approaches in sustainable development, education, governance and democracy, poverty reduction, public health, security, and economic strategy to address growing environmental concerns. For example, waste management cannot be addressed simply with landfill policies, but must incorporate smart growth, recycling, emission capture, and creation of markets to turn waste into a useful commodity. The idea of an environmental or green career is also evolving to meet the mounting demand for environmental sustainability within most if not all industries. The United States Department of Labor defines Green Careers as those industries that produce energy from renewable sources, improve energy efficiency, prevent and clean up pollution and greenhouse gases, and/or conserve natural resources:
Renewable Energy
Energy Efficiency
Alternative Fuel Transportation
Energy Storage
Energy Infrastructure
Air & Environment
Recycling & Waste
Water & Wastewater
Sustainable & Organic Agriculture
Research & Advocacy
Business Services
Finance & Investing
Advanced Materials
Green Building
Manufacturing & Industrial
While the field only makes up about 1-5% of all jobs, they represent a variety of careers and required education and training. To learn more about career paths in Green Industries:

Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation
This is worrying but not surprising.
But what interested me the most is how it is implying that currently the animals in these farms aren’t already mistreated and abused. The idea that the pathetic guidelines already in place are good enough. We should be shocked and how bad the current ‘welfare’ standards are and how often they aren’t followed. We should be shocked that many farms treat the minimum standards as the highest welfare they need to supply.
Labour said the plans were “endangering Britain’s proud tradition as a country that stands up for animal welfare”.
What a laugh.
Can we please stop perpetrating the myth that animals live on some sort of happy farm in Britain. That that animals are treated well. Because even if our current welfare laws are better than other countries’, they’re still not good enough.
But, honestly, welfare standards don’t matter that much. It leaves people believing that the animals are protected and that they aren’t abused: in reality that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
The only consequence of this move is that there will be greater health and environmental risks, which is very bad news.
