I have been thinking about the ending of Chief of War quite a bit, and I wanted to let it cook in my mind before saying anything about it. And the more I think about it, the more I realize that there are issues with the way this show deals with rape and SA (in my opinion). I think the direction of episode 8 and Heke's rape is so strong that it makes it look a lot more nuanced and complex than it actually is. The show is more focused on making her a warrior than it is on exploring the trauma she experienced. The whole conclusion feels incredibly rushed. And I have a similar issue with the ending of episode 9. The whole scene where Lima gets sexually abused by Kahekili feels less like they are trying to explore SA between two male characters and potentially set up an interesting arc in season 2 and more like a scene to show how evil Kahekili is. I have been struggling with the last scene quite a bit. There are enough people who missed the fact that Lima got sexually abused by Kahekili because of the way the scene was directed. And I do not want to throw the director of the last episode under a bus. But there is a colossal difference between the way the Rape of Heke was directed and the way the last scene was directed. The inclusion of SA and rape in this show is not a problem. I have no issue with the fact that the writers want to explore these things. But I have an issue with the way this show is handling these things. I have been reflecting on the show and how it deals with the Aikāne relationship. And even though it is not a gay relationship. It does not mean that it cannot fall into certain stereotypes that gay and queer relationships can fall into. The fact that the only same sex attraction this show shows besides the Kūpule and Lima relationship is when Kahekili SAs Lima with the two women in the background and maybe Kahekili was a CHOICE. The fact that the main same-sex relationship is on the "bad" side and all the other same-sex attractions seem to be on the bad side feels like an odd choice. I don't want to take away from other people's interpretation of the ending, it's just something I noticed.
The ROP fandom summarized:
Before ROP aired: Pffff This show looks like crap short haired elves what is this bullshit????? I WILL NEVER LIKE YOU. I mean, the effects look cool, but everything else can go to HELL.
Episode 1+2: You know what, Elrond looking kinda cute with short hair. HE DESERVES EVERYTHING also love Durin and Disa. Cant stand this Halbrand guy I am here for Gal why would I care about him. The Harfoots are cute too.
Episode 3: Yoooo Numenor looks amazing. Miriel is THE QUEEN. Also, could Gal please be a bit nicer to Halbrand god she is so annoying.
Episode 4: Alright, whoever this Adar Guy Is, I don't care. We should focus on more important things like: WHO IS SAURON guys, come on we can do this! Also Elrond is the best.
Episode 5: OK, so I was wrong, I apologize Adar is great. Still not convinced that Halbrand will have a good story arc. MORE SAURON THEORIES COMING UP. Also for some reason the older elves are growing on me goddammit. Galadriel is growing on me a bit. The Harfoots are still cute.
Epsiode 6: So I was fucking wrong about this show being bad. Adar is amazing why is everyone in this show so amazing????? Elendil and Isildur give me life. Is this show really making me ship Galdriel and Halbrand? well, I guess I have no other choice. I am starting to realize that I care more about all of these characters than I thought I would. That KISS I need it framed and hung in the louvre. "AND THEO" I AM SCREAMING!!!
Episode 7: boooo not enough Halbrand. Everything else was great, tho. Celeborn!!!!!!! This show is giving me the feels you guys. If Berek does not save Isildur I will riot.
Episode 8: OMG STEP ON ME SUARON. I DONT CARE HOW MUCH EVIL YOU DID I WILL BE YOURS!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. I am a supporter of the BI Sauron agenda. Celebrimbor was amazing. The actors are all great. THIS SHOW IS GREAT. Nori and Poppi deserve more aaaaaaa.
The current state of the fandom:
I SHIP SAURON AND GALADRIEL AAAAAAAAAA.
UUUh I ship Elendil and Miriel.
With how many people can I ship Sauron? ALL OF THEM!
Elrond/Durin/Disa Platonic or romantic, I don't care, they are cute either way.
You all realize that the Sauron/Galadirel relationship is abusive, RIGHT??? HE IS A ABUSER!!! WE should not ship this.
So is the Stranger Gandalf or a Blue Wizard????
I need season 2 now Amazon what are you waiting for
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE IS NO MERCH????
Elrond needs to be protected at all cost!!!
ep.2 Halbrand: pfff who’s this trash man
ep.6 Halbrand:
This fandom is collectively losing its mind over this man, and it is glorious to watch.
I mean, who would have thought? Not me.
