How can Breaking Bad end?
Fans of a show that can have an ending, a proper ending, which is rare, usually rack their brains with how the show can end or how it should end. Going back season to season, scene to scene, trying to find clues, little hints, as to how these characters lives will turn out. These characters that we have dedicated years to analysis and deciphering their actions, thought processes, and decisions. And I do mean lives, lives to many people that might as well be as real as you and I. These are our modern day mythos, not just the superheros or fantasy. But our Breaking Bads, our Mad Men, our Communities, our Modern Families, our Walking Dead, our HIMYM, our True Bloods, our Arrested Development, our Doctor Whos I can go on...even for some people our Real Housewives. These are the shows that we can spend hours of our social times discussing if someone would just let us. That 20 years from now we will still be obsessing over.
And now one of these great (not including Real Housewives in my book) shows is coming to an end next week and I've never really been one of those people who tries to find out how it all ends. I'm all about going along for the ride and then maybe rewatching it and through that find those clues and hints I missed the first time around. But I guess as an aspiring writer I do wonder how I would end it. But with this show I really had no clue, especially with these last two/three episodes that seem to have turned everything on its head. The stalemate is over, Walt has presumably lost (for now) everything and has decided for one last time before he dies to finish what he set out to do. To provide for his family, set them up for life, after his has ended.
And yes Walt is going to die. There is no doubt about that. He is withering right before our eyes and there is no magical pill to save him or deus ex machina that will come down and make everything ok. Nope last weekend I realized that everything will only get worst, much worst before everything is said and done.
Walt has many flaws, but one of his big flaws to me is not seeing how complicated the situation has become. He believes that he can separate everything, compartmentalize his life and none of them will touch. But in the end he mixed too many chemicals and now everything has exploded in his face. He went from just him and Jesse making crank in the RV to a multinational drug cartel within a year and so. His pride and "quest for significance" led to this end. And now like any great empire it has to fall.
And like any great empire, it doesn't fall immediately. Empires rarely fall in a burning fire, they fall after many many burning fires become so much that it's impossible to put them all out and eventually swirl together to form an inferno. And usually there are other incarnations of that empire afterwards. The Byzantine EmpireĀ lasted for a thousand years after the fall of theĀ originalĀ Roman Empire as the Eastern Roman Empire. As the Western Roman Empire fell into disarray and warring kingdoms and tribes. The Nazis are successors of Walt in this case.
So this is my ending. As a fan and writer. It doesn't even have to be close to this on the show, I will still admire what unfolds. But as I was watching last night this is the vision that came into my head.
Everyone, but two, would die. Walt would kill the majority of the Nazis in the process of retrieving his money, but one or two (Todd and his uncle, Todd definitely) will get away and they will make good on their promise. They will attempt to kill Holly and Skyler will die saving her child. Walt Jr. will die in some manner. Maybe in his sleep or after being held hostage by Todd & Uncle Jack they decide it's not worth keeping him alive. Maybe Walt will accidentally kill Walt Jr in a crossfire. The son will fall before the father. After this he is almost ready to die, but Walt has one last business to sort...Jesse. He takes Holly to Marie's and leaves her there. Now that the Nazis have been dealt with, Jesse can be free. But Jesse can't ever be free again. Too much has happened to him and too many horrible things have happened because of him and kills himself. So Walt finds him and cries like we've never seen him cry before. He feels the gravity now, of everything that he has done. He goes back and burns all of the money and with whatever ricin he has left, ends it.
But that would not be the end of the story. We still have one more person to look at. One more person that these events will affect for years to come and who can barely remember them...Holly. With the national media coverage, Holly becomes a news celebrity for a time as the "Heisenberg baby" and even as the press coverage fades, she will always be that. The daughter of a meth dealer. She will be tormented on a daily basis. Even Marie, who loves her to pieces, will say the occasional comment here and there about her parentage. Marie will always be hurt and lonely without Hank and can't help but say those hurtful words in a fit of rage. But at some point (15 maybe?) Holly will eventually take her own life. The empire that Walt built and family that he tried so hard to do good by, is now gone forever.
That's my ending, and I'm sure Vince and the writers will do better than me, but if this is a Greek tragedy, one this is for certain. Everyone dies. In the end everything will break..badly.
Or maybe, just maybe there is something for Holly. Inheriting her father's brains and her mother looks, she is able to build a new empire for herself out of the ashes of the old. She develops a new drug that will change the world.
