I stand by my head cannon that during water seven after Usopp and Luffy’s duel, when the straw hats went to go stay at the inn that night, Luffy sought out Zoro. He didn’t really know if he should ask for comfort, if it was his right to as a captain, but Zoro just takes one look at Luffy and knows that even a captain has to break down once in a while.
So Zoro doesn’t even mention it, because words won’t do them any good. He knows what Luffy needs, and it’s not reassurances or veiled reminders that this is the life he chose. What Luffy needs is the quiet to break down, the trust to let it all come apart piece by piece. Luffy needs to know there’s at least someone in this world who can see all the parts of him, even the one that breaks over Usopp’s betrayal because that stings in ways that cut Luffy deep. He needs Zoro, just Zoro, because Zoro will always be the support holding his captain up even when he waivers.
Luffy’s fingers curl into the front of Zoro’s shirt, and his eyes are wet as he cries silently into the swordsman’s chest. It’s not loud, violent sobs, but ones of heartbreak, of hurt. It’s Luffy letting all the pain that he keeps inside bubble up and breach the surface. It’s loss and grief and Zoro simply holds Luffy, let’s him cry because Zoro may know what it takes to be a captain, but he also knows what it means to be a man. To be human, and not everyone can watch their best friend lie there helpless and beaten on the ground, a friendship shattered. But Luffy had done it, and he’d done right by the straw hats, but that didn’t mean he did right by his heart—the place where Usopp’s laughter and wild tales take up space.
Zoro has his own place in that heart too. It’s quieter than all the rest, intimate in a way where neither of them have to speak it to know it exists. He is the base of Luffy’s heart, reinforcing it, patching it up when it’s been a bit roughed up, and letting it bleed when it needs to. He’s the part of Luffy’s existence that will never fail him, ever. That was the vow he made, and that oath would supersede even death if it needed to.
Luffy doesn’t even have to ask Zoro if he’ll ever leave, because so long as Luffy remains true to their dreams and their pride, Zoro won’t. He’ll see Luffy become pirate king. He’ll watch their ambitions come true right before his very eyes, and during that time he’ll remain the sentinel at Luffy’s back, a shadow of protection over the man who will one day conquer the world.
His hands were designed for greatness—greatness that can only be achieved alongside the pirate king.
And with those hands, he clings to Luffy tighter as his cries grow silent into exhaustion, because this is what Luffy needs.
And if Zoro is anything, he is but a man at the mercy of his captain.
