SnK Chapter 68 (Spoilers)

This chapter was a sort of disappointment.

A lot of crazy shit happened way too fast and it felt rushed compared previous chapters. Not to mention, does anyone else think that Isayama’s art skills went back like 10 - 20 chapters? The drawings felt pretty lazy, especially some of the main characters’ faces (mainly Erwin). The previous chapter was arguably the best drawn chapter Isayama has made. Now, we go back to his more scribble-y style.

I just had to say it. And to be honest, Historia really just comes off as some self-righteous bitch now that she’s started to “be herself. It might just be my take on it alone. However, I don’t hate her as a character. Rather, I dislike how Isayama continues to shove her new attitude down our throats. I want to see more of Armin and Mikasa’s development and the rest of squad Levi interact. Instead, we get Eren’s unnecessary display of self-loathing beyond simple monologue and Historia.

Historia Historia Historia. That’s what the story has been centered around for long enough. I want to see a fucking titan fight. Didn’t anyone else think that we’d see Eren in his new shiny titan form? We couldn’t even get that. I just can’t agree with the direction that the story is taking. Compared to the Clash of the Titans arc or the Female Titan arc, the story is becoming bland.

I know it’s unfair to attack Isayama’s choice to give us a more political story because it shows his desire to really give us an interesting story. I’m all for it, and I think it’s great. However, I don’t agree with sacrificing all the action for the sake of such excessive plot development. In the beginning, Shingeki no Kyojin was simply chaos. It told a story while also giving us a brutal taste of the reality that mankind faced against the unbeatable titans. At this point the action feels toned down, and to me that’s not what SnK should be. It doesn't feel like SnK anymore. No longer is it Advancing Titans, but Advancing Historia.

This post went from a paragraph to a god damned page so fast. My apologies for the rant but I just had to speak my mind. It’s been griping me for too long. I’m just spouting my own bullshit now but fuck it I wanna discuss it.

Eren is Blooming as a Character (Spoilers)

If these past few set of spoilers are accurate, then I think it's rather impressive on Isayama's part. In one insane mental breakdown from Eren, he is able to depict how far he has come. Throughout the series Eren always seemed like just a hot-headed kid with a lust to kill all titans and whatnot. He values his comrades, of course, but he would only consider them another part of humanity. At least, that's just how it appeared.

The fall of Levi's squad is something that is shown to haunt Eren. It was almost like the first time since the death of his mother where we saw the compassionate side of him. He didn't just blindly go after Annie, he wanted to go back and help them. It was only that he was too late. With tears in his eyes, he made the choice to fight her. This was one of the few times Eren showed his true colors as an honest, caring person after he gained his titan abilities. Most of the time his emotions are hidden in rage, but the Levi Squad really affected him.

And now, in the midst of all the chaos that is going on, Eren believes he is worthless. Despite all the good he has done, he blames all off his comrades' deaths on himself. He even goes far back to the original 104th trainees squad and his team that he was with in Trost. But he doesn't recall them as comrades, he names them. Mina, Thomas, Nac Tius, and Mylius. He remembers them all. He recalls them. Throughout this entire series, he has even let those comrades' deaths haunt him specifically.

Eren has always cared deeply for humanity. Most people say his place as a main protagonist is a mistake due to his mad behavior. But this is not just teenage angst. This is guilt. This is how Eren deals with his emotions. He gets angry. He gets crazy. And now, in a situation where he feels like he literally can do nothing, there is no anger. There is only the guilt now and his acceptance that he cannot help it. The only way, he believes, is to give up his life. No more fighting. No more anger. Only guilt.

It really is tragic, and it brings everything back together. But on a less theoretical note, I hope that crazy kid pulls through. I'm trusting you Isayama, don't make me regret it.

the fact that eren blames himself for the deaths of all of his loved ones and comrades (whose weight of their deaths he already carries) and is willing to give himself up for the sake of a better fate for humanity is quite possibly one of the most heartbreaking things ever.

so if you try to tell me that eren is just a simple, angry male protagonist with a grudge, i will fight you.

SNK Ch. 64 Hidden Message (Spoilers)

I don't know if anyone realized this, but the whole chapter ends in "The power cannot be used by Eren, so the world will never be saved from the titans."

We're set to believe that this is true and Eren cannot use the power to its extent. However, that's not what Rod Reiss is saying. He is telling Historia that the powers can't be used at all. Now, if any of you recall, Eren was able to control the titans regardless of this. So, in other words, he can use this titan ability.

Rod Reiss doesn't know this. Historia probably hasn't processed it. But if you think about it, then it's clear. Eren is part of the Reiss family.

Now this leads me to ask the question: Did Grisha know this? He must have been part of a movement that wanted the Reiss family to deliver the humans from the titans. As we read, it's clear that for 100 years the Reiss family had the ability but purposely did not use it. Perhaps Grisha wanted this to happen, and so he stole the titan power from the Reiss family.

But wait, if Eren is a member of the Reiss family, wouldn't Grisha? Clearly not. Their last name is "Yeager." But what's the last name of Eren's mother? It was never explained. Therefore, Eren's mom must have been part of the Reiss family bloodline (hence the resemblance of that the family seems to share). Did no one else think that Historia's sister looked like Eren's mom? This must be the case.

Therefore, Grisha knew Eren could use the ability. He stole it from the direct Reiss family and gave it to his son knowing he could use it. At least, this is my theory. Considering the shocked look on Eren's face at the end of the chapter, I can assume that he's slowly realizing this.
