The Story of David
Or, you know, Peter Parker if you look too closely.Â
Side trips on the road to fusion
With Anthony beginning graduate school in another city and Daniel recently returning from a field expedition to the Arctic Ocean, That’s Not Math has been on an even slower schedule than usual. Nonetheless, we are in the last stages of assembling the fourth comic book, which we hope to release before the end of the year. It is the final issue of volume one. The style for volume two will likely be more focused on prose--we can only promise that it will be interesting and aesthetically pleasing to ourselves, and extend the hope that it will be interesting for you too!
These collages are nonlinear and impressionistic, but I’m hoping the following transcript gives a good enough idea for those of you who aren’t able to see the image.
[Text for screen readers:
Collage comic strip entitled "Side trips on the road to fusion." Individual images and pieces of text are cut from old magazines and comic strips.
When, early one morning, "Come-- I will lead you to it," says a skeleton the blast of the winds from both the south and north Two women speak: "I've missed ye, child." "Let's play 'Truth or Dare'" A vast wasteland called The special relationship Men huddle over a map "Who seeks the power from beyond?" "Now wait a minute--!" Told legends of demons A woman in a robe stands in a desert plain He promised to make them grow the salt out of their bodies. The only thing we didn't put in was called an atmosphere" Two people in superhero costume crouch in the middle of a black diamond "You're fast, whatever you are!" "Wonder what our job is?" A woman says "Is that who the empty chair was for?" A man in a hat walks with his head down and says "The end of the world." Two men walk down steps. One says "Hey fellas, I'm beginning to think this isn't such a good idea" A house on the hill, with light coming from the windows. A man wearing the robes of a cardinal sits at a desk and says "No, son! If anyone's to blame it's me. I was so wrapped up in my work I didn't notice how unhappy the two of you were. Can you forgive me?" A young couple lays in the grass, embracing each other. "There's no reason why we can't."

Just can’t get outta your head!
The best part of this one, in my humble opinion, is the image of the uniformed harmonica band. Where you can find that many kids with such a strange array of harmonicas I don’t know.
Cutting our Oar
New collage from Anthony. Pro tip: you can usually tell when Anthony did the text for a collage, because he is a lot more inventive with his choice of text colors than I am.
In the Borderlands
Sad Last Act
I found an old western comic book. When you take out the racist stuff, there’s some very nice imagery and campy dialogue that are a lot of fun to play with. Also, I’ll let you decide whether Dexter is a human or a cougar.
The secret of teaching yourself music My secret is that there is no secret. Deep, huh?
Wildfires
Background by Anthony, text and some of the figures by Daniel.
This Man Needs Help
I love making these collage-prose messes. I like the aesthetic of the different kinds of paper and the different typographies, and I especially like trying to read it aloud as if it made sense. Just for fun, I transcribed the collage text, so here it is:
Remember, the beauty of strange inhabitants of flesh and blood table decorations. I'd forgotten plowing through the fields for my undersea world welcoming new things. As soon as a guided missile did not come out his love-kindling fire did quickly steep and fell asleep: it was the goat's exciting patterns arching through the sky of industrial might. And he didn't mix anything up either. The next morning he tried disturbing the mansion's only marvel still to endure, ... the Real Chocolate flavor grew a seething bath, but it was no use. In a cold valley-fountain of that ground; Which borrow'd this advantage found, until late afternoon.   A dateless lively heat, from this holy fire of love as he could, the eerie sorrow to be found as a comic that ancients had access to and I was blown away. A familiar feeling to instant winner game decided to give asteroid hunting a shot. He wasn't as if sleeping. I ignore the sudden complete set of such elaborate magic that lies in the everyday. Computers will scan the data, to start his chores. He tried as hard lying on its side, arranged a compass and yardstick and the night promised to be long he continued. "I had never stayed awake all night existence kept me so busy, and while I no longer have the average for providing me with all the joy the sun came up, I didn't know if I could do that." All these and many others to wake the others. My complicated and fairly well off, which yet men prove for so many?"   "After a couple years, I learned how to turn. At the time you bought the light of changing conditions, do these varying at any given time and loud enough either, sleeping peacefully for varying amounts, the job you intended them to do?   It will tell you what your different beneficiaries are more interesting than others." If you are like this man, you'd never catch me next to a variety for almost a week, and not one morning in his bed. "How else could they afford over the years you cooperate, to enjoy and where you will stand in the future. This man needs help... "I'm a morning person," he said, no part of this at all. He spent the entire day billowing far above the atmosphere. His data revealed nothing, showed a lot of arguing and have probably purchased its strange history and fate. However, looked at today, the last day, the old fashioned way, it did not work.
Let’s Talk Business
Here at That’s Not Math, we promise only one thing: that it isn’t math. Well, this may look like math, but don’t let your eyes and / or your common sense deceive you.
A Watered-Down Secret of Life
Because really, is there any secret of life that isn’t?Â
Let That Showman Solve Divisions
Slowly but surely we march towards actually finishing the fourth and final issue of volume 1. We recently found a collection of these great kids nonfiction books from the 50s that are full of excellent short sentences that quietly absurd out of context. Daniel’s been playing around with a pen-and-paper TNM drawn comic that is based on these carefully extracted sentences. You can see the first panel on our Instagram (http://www.instagram.com/thatsnotmath). More fun things soon!
Hi!
I’m not sure that this is what Anthony had in mind when he put all these images of food together, but that’s the beauty of collaboration, isn’t it?
Oh What A Feeling!
This one is 100% Anthony and it’s 100% awesome. After the release of volume three things have been quiet on the That’s Not Math front, as Daniel’s been swamped with new baby + new Mons La Hire EP. Now that he’s settled into more of a rhythm with the baby and the EP is ready for release, TNM activities can resume in earnest. Got some fun ideas and lots of new collage material to explore, including a cheap paperback from the 60s telling the story of a spy cat in a Disney movie. Some real gems in there.
This Pristine Odyssey
Just about a year ago, Anthony and I met up to do some collage for fun, and I surprised him with the idea of making a comic together. He’d never really done collage before, but he is great at poetry and I wanted to combine my visual ideas with his poetic voice. Working together has brought out his visual ideas and my poetic sensibilities. We’re about to release the third comic book compilation of That’s Not Math and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve done together. We’ve had some great experiences tabling and collaging with people in the community and look forward to the next year of growth and experimentation.
The Story of Creation
Putting the finishing touches on issue number three before sending it off to get printed! Very excited to show you all these new comics. We’ve had a couple busy weekends - yesterday we were at the Corvallis Arts Center’s Arts Alive event, where in spite of some vengeful gusts of wind, Daniel finished the text collage for the inside cover of issue 3, and a bunch of new acquaintances stopped by and tried their hand collage. Da Vinci Days the week before was great as well - it’s a longer event, and we were a little better sheltered from the wind. Heard some great bands and saw some cool science exhibits. As a side note, we might need to print some more copies of issues 1 and 2, we’re running a bit low!
The High Cost of a Bad Reputation
After a month of near-missing and much-needed breaks from work and school, Anthony and I met up on Tuesday and got back to work on TNM Volume Three. It’s looking like there will be more of the darker, moody That’s Not Math comics in this issue, just in time for fun and bright summer days!
