You’ve got to learn to leave the table when love’s no longer being served.

I’m so tired of being so fucking smart and having so much potential and having literally all my potential success stamped out completely because of a mental illness I can’t help having

Perhaps the clearest sign of just how little we want to talk about mental health is one of the only times it is actively brought up, as we’ve seen yet again this week, in the aftermath of a mass shooting as a means of steering the conversation away from gun control.
The aftermath of a mass shooting might actually be the worst time to talk about mental health, because for the record, the vast majority of mentally ill people are nonviolent, and the vast majority of gun violence is committed by non-mentally ill people. So the fact we tend only discuss mental health in a mass shooting context is deeply misleading.

The Mayor of Miami, My sister Rosa who drove me to urgent care the night of the shooting & played a major part in saving my life that night, Cedric who I pushed on the car floor and I. I saved his life that night & he continues to give my live meaning everyday. I #wearOrange for the victims and the survivors , for our youth, and for our future . #nationalgunviolenceawarenessday #gunsense #wearorangeformegan #notonemore #miamievents (at David T Kennedy Park)

The day is finally here! National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Who do you wear orange for? Meet me at David T. Kennedy park and become apart of something bigger than yourself, a national movement to get gun sense in our communities. I'm tired of seeing lives lost to senseless acts of violence. Aren't you ? Let's stand for something, together. •••• #wecan #wearorangeforme #wearorangeforhadiya #miamishootings #miamievents #momsdemandaction #weareone #gunviolence #gunsense (at David T Kennedy Park)

I remember when they told me I wouldn't make it past the 48hr critical stage. 4 days later I woke up from my coma. They told me I wouldn't be able to walk again. 4 weeks later I limped around the hospital floors inspiring people young & old. Yesterday I went cliff jumping, something I'm sure 3 years ago no one thought I'd be able to do. Moral of the story: Never let someone tell YOU what YOU can/can't do. Nothing is impossible.
