At first it was out of a vague sense of penance. Max's voice is low, careful, like it often is with Lando, when he can't decode his feelings, can't really tell what is going on. There is a warm hand on his bare shoulder, squeezing the muscle carefully.

And before he can protest, Max's hand is on his neck, a short squeeze, letting his hand linger—maybe longer than necessary. And then the warmth is gone, and Lando shivers, sneers in Max's direction before he downs the rest of his beer and gets up.
