X-Marks in New Orleans

ABOVE: a handful of residents have decorated their homes with crafted metal emblems of the X-Marks left on their home after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, rescue teams went door to door to help evaluate the damage and find possible survivors or deceased. To show a home had been searched markings were left on the homes. These X-Marks can be read starting from left, the Name of the Search Team. Top, the Date the dwelling was searched. Right, a description or possible Hazards. Bottom, Number of Deceased found inside. The “NE” found in the top two images is believed to stand for ‘Not Entered’ or ‘No Entry.’ (To which I am curious about as, If the dwelling wasn’t entered, how could it then be considered searched?)

These X-Marks still sprinkle the cities homes and dwellings, in 2017, and is a somber reminder of the devastation the great city of New Orleans suffered.
