But when a soul, by choice and conscience, doth Throw out her full force on another soul, The conscience and the concentration both Make mere life, Love. For Life in perfect whole
Elizabeth Barrett Browning "Love"
She plucked the clouds from the sky, Water droplets danced us by, Fluff free of the painful blue A new goddess, a new life.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.
- Maya Angelou "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"
But the Lark is so brimful of gladness and love, The green fields below him, the blue sky above, That he sings, and he sings; and for ever sings he— “I love my Love, and my Love loves me!
Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 'Answer to a Child's Question'
He would not stay for me, and who can wonder? He would not stay for me to stand and gaze. I shook his hand, and tore my heart in sunder, And went with half my life about my ways.
A. E. Housman, 'He Would Not Stay for Me, and Who Can Wonder'
But just in case you are even more oblivious than I had thought humanly possible, I’ll tell you once more, without metaphor or simile, without reservation or expectation. I love you.
ChampagneSly (AO3), 'Hidden Verse, Hidden Heart"
But in my arms till break of day Let the living creature lie, Mortal, guilty, but to me The entirely beautiful.
W. H. Auden, 'Lullaby'
I know enough to know that if equal affection cannot be, let the more loving one be me
W. H. Auden, 'The More Loving One'
I turn away reluctant from your light, And stand irresolute, a mind undone, A silly, dazzled thing deprived of sight From having looked too long upon the sun.
Edna St. Vincent Millay, 'When I Too Long Have Looked Upon Your Face'
but it's different
If there is one thing I have come to understand, it's that I'm not that good of a person.
I can see the way my actions, or perhaps my overall lack of interest can affect people, but I continue the way I want because being ignorant of other people's feelings is a simple act, or a lie to pull off. I care for my friends, and I can easily make promise after promise about things that I would supposedly do for them. But whether or not I would follow through with these promises would depend on how I'm feeling.
When the bullet flies towards you, am I the me who dreams and is always looking for a chance to show my love and affection for you? Or am I the me who barely lives at all and thinks everything to be pointless or a bother? It's interesting to think that a small thing such as my state of mind could affect whether or not someone is dead. It's bad, I suppose, but interesting nonetheless.
Am I the only one who is this way? Well, I wouldn't know, I guess. It's scary to think of me as an abnormal in a world of single-minded individuals, but it's even scarier to think that everyone else is just like me. How many people walk with the heaviness of another side? How many people spend hours with emptiness looming over them, worried that this side will rear its head among loved ones? Scary, scary. Humans are scary.
If our existence is so small then why do our thoughts swell up so damn big and block out everything else?
Sleep is a welcome gadget in our head-bind hood The crawling animals will seek all things from all things moist and I will relentlessly shame myself in rest and waking Find out my truly void, the rabbit freer I lie in wait, hush little heart
Purity Ring, "Saltkin"
