THE WHOLE ENTIRE FEELING . of the whole entire morning. dronia didn't have to run off and it was replaced by an early curiosity of karlach's tail, initiating karlach's arousal just to see her get off. it may probably feel like you're changing, that dronia isn't the same she was. SHE PROBABLY ISN'T . the person who was living the life caius is now currently not that person and karlach is the last person to instill wisdom, but surviving something is just creating a personality that's added on top of the other one. UNDERNEATH IT ALL YOU'RE STILL THE SAME PERSON . karlach is still the daughter of two wonderful parents, she just can't physically step into that role anymore. and she'll never, never hate that dronia is caius' wife, they just can't physically be that anymore. karlach leans down to pick up dronia's trousers, holding them out slightly, if only because she was parked directly by dronia's side. in case, you know, dronia needed some leverage. USE THE BIG , STRONG TIEFLING FIANCEE , OF COURSE . @thcdoomed
She never even got to the wife part. She may as well have been, their wedding had only been two weeks out when everything went horribly horribly wrong. Her entire life flipped on its head and now she stand forever with one foot in the world of the living, and one in the land of the dead. In a strange way, her love is much the same, one part of her will always be buried with Caius. The loving fiancé, his ring upon a chain around her neck, the land of the dead. The other part of her is here now, with Karlach, feeling the air on her skin and the warmth from the tiefling keeping her from shivering now that she's out of the water. Half in, half out: but where she came from does not determine where she goes from here. While part of her will always be with Caius, her heart is in Karlach's hands now, and she knows she will treat it with all the care of a baby bird.
They were both large women, weren't they? At least by the standards of their species. And yet, Dronia's gentleness was rarely doubted. She was hardy and strong, good around a farm or on the hunt. Good in a fight. Karlach, despite what they had made her into, is also infinitely gentle, if not exuberant and full of life and joy. Gortash couldn't take that from her. He couldn't douse her fire she had before the engine.
Jalen saved Dronia. Took her in after the attack and nursed her back from the brink of death. All with a pregnant wife by his side. Both of them had been so good to her. And while Ayena remained at home with the child, Jalen still takes the time to see this through. Caius was like his brother, so he considered Dronia family too. And Dronia sees him much the same. "It's nice to have something that's just mine. Not in a possessive way, but in a cherished way." Dronia can't help the big grin on her face as Karlach points at her. "All for you."
Dronia took the trousers, nodding and leaning against her as she began to pull them on. "You're giving me all the encouragement I could ever want or need to heal faster. We have so much lost time to make up for."

There were two answers she could give in that moment. The easy answer, and the truth. But the truth is a complicated thing borne of a complicated situation. Things about herself that she is still discovering, even as they are back out of the darks of the Shadow-cursed Lands. There is a certain comfort in the dark, now. It doesn't feel as oppressive as it once had, she can see in it far better than before, and save for the two shining red pinpricks where her pupils lied, she could hide most of what she had become here.
But that was a pretty big thing to look past, wasn't it? The eyes. They weren't the forest green they were before. They had been red since she woke up after the attack on her village, and the uneasy glow came after the Shadow-cursed Lands, when her curse could no longer be staved off by the elixir's Jalen had given her the supplies to make. Here in the dark, most the others were asleep. It just felt easier to breathe, something she no longer did.
"The stars look so different now," She says, not turning to look at him just yet. "I can't tell if it's because we just spent all that time in the darkness where they couldn't shine through, or because of what I've become. They're even more beautiful, but I wish this wasn't the way I could truly see them like this."

It... sure was something. Grotesque maybe? But she's not entirely sure that's the right word for it. Shameful, definitely is. Sloppy. There was no sign of reverence, the ways in which the ritual was performed was careless and undignified. If any follower of Mielikki had pulled something like that, they would have been laughed right out of ritual, and scolded for being so wasteful of what they were given. But this is not her faith, she does not know what constitutes a respectful ritual or not.
Instead of immediately voicing her opinion, she simply clears her throat.

Aylin tried to reason why she’d been given the briefest taste of freedom, to glimpse her love alive, only to be dragged into the terrible dark once more. Moreover, was this a foul place even in comparison to the Shadowfell. Replacing the isolation and loneliness were macabre corridors of flesh. Sinew and muscle coating the walls and floor, pulsing and alive. Aylin, never to fear anything, found herself thankful to be confined on a rocky outcrop above the disgusting environment.
It was a pale comfort, fleeting in the face of having her immortality siphoned by Ketheric. Ghostly hands clung to her as she struggled, their grip tightening the more she tried to escape. They hurt in a manner she could not define, clawing at her flesh and rending her soul. She glared at her captor, but failed to find the right words to convey her fury. Ketheric’s stare towards her was vicious.
“Finally silent?” he jeered, Aylin clenched her jaw.
“I will escape this prison,” she promised him, “and I will kill you, Ketheric.”
“A century of imprisonment and empty threats,” Ketheric seemed amused by her words, “I’d have thought you’d have learnt by now. Must you lose your tongue, again?”
Oh, how she loathed him. Yet his confidence was not ill-born, she could not escape without aid, and last she saw her newfound allies, they’d been swarmed with undead. As Ketheric turned his attention away from her, she dreaded to consider the implications should she remain captive forever.
She caught a glimpse of a familiar form, slinking through the shadows of this alien cavern. Was it truly possible?
A hole had opened up in the floor ahead of them. Deep and cavernous and reeking of bile and organic matter. It smelled like the Nautiloid. Rancid and writhing and living. But no time to focus on that just yet, she slashed and stabbed at the incoming undead, but her focus was on that hole.
She spared a look to Shadowheart and Aylin, briefly crying out, "Clear a path!" If they could turn the undead long enough, they could get to the hole and chase Ketheric and Aylin to the bottom. She made a promise to keep Aylin safe, a promise she intended to keep.
Another was torn down by her blade.
Cries in the distance grew louder as she could hear the sound of the Harpers coming up in the rear. Finally, a break.
"Hold them off! We're going after Ketheric and Aylin!" It was moments like these where she felt Caius' hands guiding her. She had watched how he led, saw how he commanded with such confidence. With any luck she could be even half the leader he was. Even when she was so lost herself.
As the undead ran toward the incoming backup, Dronia motioned for her team to follow. "We have to go down!" Oh, but the stench, the closer she got, the more it became apparent this would be her greatest test yet. It was alive, and it reeked of viscera and blood.
The only reason it didn't affect her on the Nautiloid was that her dhampiric nature had been kept in check. She had no such luck now.
Turning to look at the others, she pulled her gaiter over her nose and mouth, and after only a moment's hesitation, she dove down the hole.
the smell of this place — even with this mask on. amazing how people could work for such a madman. desperation saturates this place . . . there's blood on all the coins that pass through here. █ independent, only mildly selective, and non-affiliated multi-muse ft. an array of muses i find highly interesting.

sometimes vengeance is merely a placeholder for emptiness. vengeance does have a meaning and an afterlife when there is more than emptiness in the space. KILLING GORTASH FELT EMPTY . what would karlach have to live for if she didn't make friends getting to gortash? NOTHING IS MORE OF A HELL THAN AVERNUS EVER COULD BE . she would know, she's been to both and she would prefer an imp's stupid company over the aching loneliness that feels like a boulder crushing her to death.
NOT THAT KARLACH DOESN'T MIND KISSING DRONIA ━ it's one of her favorite things, in fact, she just really, really wants to pull dronia into the tightest hug imaginable. that just probably isn't the greatest idea right now. SOMEBODY HAS A FEW MARKED STABBED WOUNDS ON THEIR BACK . . . and it's not karlach. which usually karlach is incredibly physically affectionate and touchy, notably not straying too far from dronia's side as is. SO THIS IS JUST HER DISPLACING SOME OF THAT ENERGY SO IT WON'T BE HARMFUL . of course.
"shit, i'm so excited." karlach whispers and it was so quiet, yet it did hold a whole entire world's worth of excitement in the tone. GET SOME ALE IN HERE . she'd say a cigar, but . . . maybe replace that with a fucking feast. something. THIS KIND OF REVENGE DOES FEEL SATISFYING . her enemy is dead, buried deep in the ground, and she gets to be happy. karlach just shifts her hands on dronia's some more before she breathes in.
"alright, let's find something to eat." karlach just says, stepping away. she legitimately takes a few steps before pausing again, head tilting. "and probably get dressed. i guess."
Vengeance is a feeling Dronia hadn't known before Demasc. What did she have to avenge? A disease that took her parents? The ettercap that tore her throat and face open as a child? The nature of things, people get sick, monsters attack, especially when you show up to their territory with a bow pointed at it. But the destruction of her entire village?
