Indefinite Hiatus
@oh-you-are-so-defiantâ
Maxence strapped his boardâs leash to his ankle as he stood on the beach not far off from where Alan was. âHey, uh,â he said looking out at the waves, âI know I never said it, but, uh, what you did at the Halloween party, when I looked uncomfortable?â Max swallowed and tried not to make it weird. âThanks. And thanks for being cool and not brining it up when my mom was here.â
He grabbed his waterproof case from his sandy backpack and let the rest of the bag fall back onto the beach. He and Alan had been traveling the half hour out here to surf every morning they could spare and it had been far more exciting and therapeutic than anything OrlĂ©ans had offered them. âI think Iâm gonna figure my shit out one day, but-â Max strapped the waterproof case to his arm with more force than necessary. âUnless those swells have relationship advice, Iâm assuming itâs not today.âÂ

Win: I made him a cake and wrote my answers on it
Win: when he eats it it'll affect his judgement
Win: wanna copy my cake?
Maxence: you're a goddamn genius
Maxence: Think he likes pancakes? Or scrambled eggs? Or stir fry?
Maxence: That's all I know how to make.
Maxence: wait. There's also muffins...straight out of the bag of muffin mix.

Maxence: hey, you know how we bullshitted that last math assignment before the final? What's your plan for this one?
Maxence: I thought for sure the NZ professor would be better, but he explains shit.
Maxance: I'm gonna fail.
oh-you-are-so-defiantâ:
âPlease,â Alan said, hugging his father and InĂ©s in turn. He reached over to give SolĂšneâs hair a ruffle, âyou would if it really came down to it. Iâve got faith in my favourite Jolly Boy.â
âFaith that your friend will lie for you, Alan?â Keith questioned, giving Alan a flat look. Sometimes, he didnât understand his son. But then again, sometimes he acted so much like his mother that Keith wished heâd gotten them away from her sooner. âBut yes, the trip did take a while. Iâm glad we managed to get business class seats. I think SolĂšne would have rioted if we hadnât.â
Maxence ignored Alanâs teasing and looked back at his little sister. âFlying is weird, huh?â âScary!â SolĂšne corrected adamantly as he let her down gently till her little Converse hit the tile flooring. âScary when it takes off. Scary when it lands. Scary when it hits bumps in the sky.â
âYeah, that part is kind of scary. You wanna see where we live right now?â he asked. He reached and took the bag from his mother. His mother hadnât taught him to be a complete ass. He could carry her bag for her. He looked at Alan. âYou wanna let them freshen up and head to eat?â he asked kind of bored with their options. âIâve gotta admit that itâs really weird to me that we left France and then get treated to Cirque du Soleil.â
SolĂšne looked up between Max and Alan. âWhatâs Cirque du Soleil?â
âItâs professionals giving us an example of what it looks like to perform like dancing monkeys through the system for the rest of our lives,â Max answered before shooting a grin at Alan. âMaxence!â InĂ©s scolded. Max just turned on his heels to lead everyone back to their dorms, hoping at least Alan would back him on this.

Keith walked towards the school, SolĂšne clinging to his back like a baby monkey, and Ines holding to his arm. Heâd known that Ines had wanted to come out and see Maxence, but heâd also known sheâd been nervous about travelling alone with SolĂšne. Keith had already been planning on coming out for his own son, so it was easy to offer to travel with her. After all, heâd been fairly close to Ines and Cyrille since Alan declared Maxence his friend when theyâd met.
âNow, I texted the boys,â Keith said, readjusting SolĂšne. âThey should be meeting us out front, unless Alanâs done something stupid to hold them up. Again.â
âDad, you wound me,â Alan said, jogging up with Max and a grin. âHave I ever done something stupid that made us late?â He paused, thinking. âIn the last week?â he amended, looking at Max with his trademarked shit-eating grin. âTell âem Jolly Boy. Iâve been good.â
âI will not lie on your behalf,â Maxence told Alan with a shake of his head as he grinned up at his mother. InĂ©s gave a skeptical look and Max amended, âI mean, at least not to you guys.â
He hugged his mother tightly and then pulled SolĂšne from Keithâs back so that he could hug her too. âCome here, you. Hey! I missed you!â he said, swinging her around before looking back at his mother and Keith. âHow was your trip? It takes forever, doesnât it? Worth it though. Alan and I have been surfing nearly every morning since we got here.â

Win: I speak some french!
Win: okay it's not just me
Win: i take it u uh didn't do it either....
Maxence: I haven't even tried. And at this point, I'm not sure I want to.
Maxence: What's the punishment for not turning in an assignment?
Maxence: It can't be too bad, right? I'm pretty sure we haven't guillotined anyone in decades.

Win: Did u do the math homework?
Win: I do not understand any of what she said today and it had to do with before the final.
Maxence: You're just asking me this because I speak French, aren't you?
Maxence: Just because she and I are both French does not mean I understand the assignment.
Maxence: She still sounds insane in either language she's mumbling.

âToast, definitely,â Alan confirmed, yawning again. He grabbed a butter knife and a couple of plates down for the toast. âAlways toast. You know damn well we think best with food in hand.â
It was an awful habit that theyâd started sometime after the became friends. Alan couldnât remember if he started it or if Max did, but they did it now. Theyâd probably do it for some time to come too.
âWhatâs the deal with the Yodel boy, anyway?â Alan asked, ducking into Maxâs room to plug his phone in. Â Alan came back, pushing his hair out of his face. âBecause Jolly Boy, youâve never struck me as the type of dude that wanted to be called pet names like âsexy boyâ.â
âJökull,â Maxence corrected, knowing Alan knew full well how to say his name, but ignoring the last comment altogether. âAnd I donât know. We went out a few times. It was fun. Heâs nice. But I felt like everything was moving so fast, you know? Never mind, you donât know.â
He looked in the fridge again, this time pulling out a carton of eggs and holding them up with a shrug and a silent question to Alan. âAnd then I was already confused about how I was feeling about that and you started acting like you.â Max rubbed his temples and grabbed a frying pan before looking back at Alan. âAnd I donât know what to do with that, man. What were you even thinking?â
oh-you-are-so-defiantâ:
âWell,â Alan said, stretching. âEither you have a phone shaped lump in your mattress, or your phone is currently under my thigh.â He pulled at the device and handed it to Max. âHere. Pretty sure we fell asleep on it. Looks about all the way dead, but eh.â
âYou know what, if you hadnât shoved your elbow in my face repeatedly, I probably wouldnât have stolen the blankets,â Alan countered. He knew full well that he probably would have still stolen the blanket in his sleep. Alan stretched, getting up to follow Max into the kitchen.
âBut Jolly Boy, dude, I know you love me,â Alan cooed, winking at Max and getting out the coffee mugs in his poor attempt to be helpful. âIâm your favourite, and you know it. But uh, hopefully, I didnât do too much permanent damage for your love life last night.â
Maxence plugged his phone in to charge in the sitting room he shared with his roommate and got to work on the coffee. As the coffee maker started to make sounds of life, Max stretched his neck and back a little more and then moved toward the refrigerator. âI donât know what my love life is these days,â he told Alan with defeat. âNothing feels real, but everything feels like itâs supposed to be. I donât know what Iâm doing.â
He pulled out hazelnut coffee creamer and two jars of jam. âYou want toast? Iâm gonna make toast while I decide what I actually want for breakfast.â He wasnât sure if it were Alan that taught him that you could eat while searching for or making other food, but he had definitely been sharing that unhealthy habit with him for a number of years now. They were a young guys. Their metabolisms could take it.Â
âThereâs another charger in my room if your phone needs it,â he offered, knowing Alan knew where it was. âIâm a little scared mine is going to come to life with pictures from me making out with your mostly naked dumb ass. Mainly hoping no one was paying attention.â

Avery had heard are you okay asked since the dance more times than she could have even bothered to keep track of. She didnât mean to roll her eyes at the question, but she still did. âIâm great,â She said with a shrug before tossing the bat to the side and hopping over and away from the car- just in case. Didnât hurt to get rid of evidence, right? Even though her prints were probably all over the batâ the driver would probably just be too pissed to see the bat, though.âAre you okay? Isnât it a little late to be making a pharmacy stop?â
âSeasonal allergies are a real thing,â Maxence laughed sarcastically after noting that she definitely didnât want to talk about the bat situation. âI keep sneezing and Iâve had a sinus headache for hours.â He glanced at the car with the broken out windows again. âIs there something I can do? Iâm guessing you didnât bust these windows out of a complete strangerâs car so if you need to talk or if you want me to anonymously report something or if you want to blow off some steam, I donât know-â Max shrugged kind unsure of himself. âI could help?â He held out his hand, but then remembered the sneezing and thought better of it before pulling his hand back. âIâm Maxence...Max. And you probably want to ditch the bat somewhere better than that. Find a drainage pipe or something?â
oh-you-are-so-defiant·:
âYou were dreaming about spiders?â Alan asked, sitting up and rubbing his face. âI can still feel them on my legs, dude. It was the worst feeling in the world, I think.â He shuddered, flopping back down on the bed with a groan. âJolly Boy, I regret to inform you, sharing a bed was probably the worst decision youâve ever had.â
Which, of course, it meant that it was Alanâs decision. He hadnât wanted to be alone, rattled more than heâd let on during the dance. âI feel like death, dude,â Alan groused, shaking his head slightly. âDo you have coffee? I think we need coffee.â
âIt wasnât even my decision,â Maxence complained as he sat up and squinted in the light pouring in the window. âWhereâs my phone?â
He vaguely recalled being pretty stupid with Alan last night and there were probably going to be consequences for that poor decision, but whatever. Whatâs done was done now. None of this was what he had in mind when he came to Luxor. Somehow, he had imagined this would be about getting a degree and not about dealing with Alanâs antics. They were always fun in the moment and afterward, he usually felt like he needed to haul himself to confession even if he hadnât been the one doing anything.
He glanced over at Alan, somehow needing to make sure there werenât any spiders around after his dream and Alan continuing to insist they were really climbing on him. âYeah, yeah coffee. But just for the record, I dreamed of spiders; I was cold all night, and I hate you.â There was no real vehemence to it, but he didnât figure Alan was awake enough to pay attention to him anyway. He dragged himself out of bed, ran his fingers through his hair, and stalked off toward the kitchen in search of something to revive his friend.
averybeaumontpeters·:
Avery was far too pleased with herself as she marveled at her work, as she stood in the parking lot in the dark well after curfew. Shards of glass were all around, likely both in the seats of the car as well as on the ground from her taking the baseball bat to both windows. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw someone approach, and she quickly turned to face them, jumping back just a tad- yet a hint of her amused smile still lingered. âHey, I was never here, alright?â She asked, hoping theyâd be cool and not rat her out.
Maxence held up his hands in surrender. âYeah, yeah, of course. Itâs not my car. And youâve got a bat. I saw nothing.â He had just been walking by the parking lot to the closest pharmacy for something for his allergies after he had sneezed his hundredth sneeze and finally had enough, but this was worth being out of bed for as well. His eyes darted both to the car windows and then to the bat in the girlâs hands. âDid- did something happen? Are you okay?â
dogs or cats?
I like all animals, but dogs are best!
Is it ever okay to lie?
Yeah. There are plenty of good times to lie.
-To protect someone -To keep from hurting someoneâs feelings (especially children) -To maintain privacy -To keep yourself safe -To keep from being embarrassed -To surprise someone later (like a gift or a surprise party) Iâm sure thereâs a lot of other good reasons too. Lies arenât completely bad things. Lies are often âgray areasâ of morality. And a lot of morality is relative anyway.
