Henrique Alvim Correa's illustrations for a 1906 edition of H.G Wells' "The War Of The Worlds"
Silly little sketch of Beth from the 2025 tour (my favourite version shes so prettyy)
The War Of The Worlds
By Henrique Alvim Correa
Worked with the gel plate things for the first time today, tried to make Dead London and honestly pleasantly surprised with my first go at both this and Posca markers.
a major plot point in war of the worlds is the fact that the martians are so technologically superior to us that even our best weapons (the thunder child) can only bring down a couple tripods before being destroyed only for the martians to then be wiped out by simple bacteria
and in it's base setting of the late 1800s that works really well, but people love making modern adaptions, so for that to work the martians have to be superior to modern weapons or it lacks the hopeless feeling of the original and a lot of the themes are lost
which means a modern war of the worlds adaption is a setting where a coughing baby beats a hydrogen bomb
2025 tour beth I miss you
Switched up my colouring style and it turned out pretty good
Making the video about the terrible new War of the Worlds movie has prompted me to re-read the book and now I fear I’m descending back into a WotW phase. Anyway this is my favorite interpretation of the Martians (I can’t find the original source) it’s adorable and I would let it drink my blood honestly

Film Adaptations for War of the Worlds - why do they not work?
Waiting for class, so I thought I'd detail out my ideas for my dissertation.
First of all, all films are made for profit, and often go against the beliefs of HG Wells, a renowned socialist. They snip and cut at the plot and characters in a way that suits them. Notice how 2005 or 2025 (granted, I haven't touched that film, BUT from what I've seen...) has zero mention of a character similar to The Artilleryman OR The Curate. Both of these characters are essential foils to the plot of WOTW - The Curate, showing the hysteria of a man trusted to be a leader of his people, how that if a leader in society collapses first, there is no point - and The Artilleryman, who at first glance might seem as if he is faulted for his somewhat mad revolutionary ideals, until one peeks under the hood and understands that many of his ideas were ones that Wells believed in.
It wasn't his 'madness' BUT his lack of resolve to fulfil these ideas. By removing these characters, you often lose the key messages of the story. To save our society from peril, we need to keep a level head and keep marching on.
Now, not to discourage many fans here, but a keen focus on the aliens removes a lot of credibility for me. The reason the books were so terrifying was due to a fear of the unknown. The characters knew nothing about how these aliens worked, how they thought, how their society worked, etc. By focusing mainly on these aliens, by showing us their massive war machines up front (looking at YOU 2005), it removes any and all fear from the stories. As well as that, to link back to the point about profit, the aliens are often the focal point of advertising, being used to attract viewers to an already subpar film.
The only adaptation that somewhat works to mirror the books is the Musical Version, written by Jeff Wayne. Yes, I have many nitpicks about this version, from Wayne's intentions to the endless cash grabs that Wells would be unappreciative of. However, I feel as though this version really hits the nail on the head of fear. It starts with the heat ray, emerging from the pod, to the fighting machines, to the handling machines. I do wish they kept the line about the flying machines that the Artilleryman utters to the Narrator, as that too leaves listeners in suspense: what possibly do these creatures plan for all of humanity?
Now, I have far more I could say, but I want to finish this post by mentioning that I believe a lot of these adaptations fail by having them be set in modern day, not in the original Victorian setting. It would've been terrifying as you would've had zero information if you were trapped in... say... a ruined house? You rely on other people and telegrams and newspapers, and ultimately, you never know the Martians' next move. You don't get to see TikToks of Horsell Common being destroyed; you instead hear by word of mouth and experience the tragedy there.
I'll probably continue this in a rb but ultimately those are my beliefs on film adaptations.

I can smell the autism radiating off of this man’s artwork.
i think adaptations of the war of the worlds have two major problems, being that they focus more on interpersonal drama than they do on the invasion (ie bbc miniseries - i rewatched the first episode recently and they genuinely took half the episode aka one sixth of the show's entire runtime to even get to the spacecraft opening on horsell common, they just spent 30 minutes talking about the main guy's divorce and rocky relationship with his brother or something idk i dont care), and that everyone tries to do something different with their adaptation but no one's ever done a straight faithful adaptation of the source material, with the closest in my opinion being the jeff wayne musical, as it's the only one i can think of which mostly follows the narrative of the book
Yayyyy concept sketches
I dont think im gonna be good at making the martians scary so im leaning more into how weird they are, here's also the narrator, his wife, the curate and the artilleryman :]
