There are SO many ways humans and Eridians compliment each other, and I don't even think some were intentional. For example: Lots of fan content I've seen has been kind of thoughtlessly projecting humanity's heat seeking behaviour onto Eridians. Reading the biology document, however, has made me infer something — Eridians love the cold.
They sleep at night, even in the absence of a light cycle, because that's when the temperature drops. Unlike humans, they don't use blankets. They don't try to preserve heat. They want to cool down faster, because because that's what their body needs shut down and rest! They RELAX in the cold!
Not only that, but their version of breathing is a constant influx of cool air. If they're without that coolant for even a few minutes, they're in serious trouble, and after half an hour, they're dead. Unlike us, they're at constant risk of overheating.
But not while they have a source of cold nearby. Like, for example, a human who lives at a fraction of their temperature.
On the Hail Mary, Grace spends a lot of time pressed against Rocky. Their temperature differences are extreme enough that xenonite can't entirely halt the heat transfer, so it's pleasantly warm. He feels like a cat curling up by the fire. It's relaxing. Of course, he also feels a little bad that he's draping his freezing raincloud of a body all over Rocky, but he figures Rocky puts up with the unpleasant cold okay.
Except: Rocky is chasing the cold just as much as Grace is chasing the heat.
Grace's muscles unwind with a constant heat press. Rocky relaxes with an endless source of peaceful, relieving cooling. What a funny quirk of biology, Rocky thinks, that being so incomprehensibly opposite to each other is so pleasant. What a lovely quirk of fate, that they've been given the opportunity to learn that through each other.
Okay, as much as I love Rocky extending Grace's life without telling him, consider: Rocky *does* tell Grace, Grace just then somehow manages to like. Horrendously misinterpret what the treatment is actually for. Like.
Eridian Doctor: We went through the human genome and found a bunch of places with old broken DNA repair mechanisms so we came up with a gene editing therapy that fixes them in order to extend your lifespan.
Grace: *flashbacks to when Rocky found out that humans can experience long term effects from lower doses of radiation exposure and Grace wasn't being as careful as he should have been back when they first met because he still thought this was gonna be a suicide mission*
Grace (internally): Oh, so cancer prevention! Got it!
Grace: Sounds good!
*like 100 years later*
Grace: Hey Rocky, how am I not dead yet?
Rocky: ???
date idea: you kill me
guy who will never understand how important he is, because he will always give the credit to someone else
"Grace sounds like a young Eridian" this, "Grace is chronologically a pebble" that. ENOUGH. I propose "Grace is a creaky old man to Eridians." His wealth of knowledge beyond theirs gives the impression that he's spent centuries alive to learn it all. His rougher voice (compared to their whalesong) and steady, fluid movements (compared to their habit of either perfect stillness or jittering) are both full on Eridian gandpappy. They're convinced he's basically Bill Nye before he even reveals he wants to teach science.
Give me an Erid that refuses to accept that Grace, a thirty four year old, isn't everybody's sweet old grandpa no matter how much Rocky rages that Grace is technically younger than everyone he's teaching.
You ever think that in the middle of an argument, Grace once reminded Rocky that from a physics point of view, gas is considered a fluid, so whenever he cycles ammonia through his vents, Rocky is technically leaking fluids everywhere, and how close do you think Rocky was to threatening to kill them both
relistening to the audiobook and got inspired!
headcanon that Grace grades the other scientists work only if he’s focusing on something else or he’s tired.
Like. Imagine one of the scientists studying Astrophage gives Grace a paper detailing their recent findings and Grace being locked in on something else, he just looks up, skims the paper, then pulls out a red pen from somewhere and marks it, “B+, you forgot to account for…” then after a 5 minute lecture on how to improve, he goes back to typing or smth. The scientist just standing there baffled thinking ‘B+? What are we in? A classroom?”, and kind of bum hurt that they only got a B+ (bc ofc they want an A) so they go back to researching with a new ferocity cuz dammit they’re going to get that A. Cue the science team being fueled by Dr.Grace’s grades, them just rubbing it into each others faces if they get A’s or A+’s. Headcanon 2 is that he just keeps gold star stickers in his pockets so for example: All of them are in a meeting, Dr. smth pipes up with a good suggestion and he goes, “Great job! You get a gold star.” And just puts it on their phone case or badge and moves on, everyone is flabbergasted and a bit jealous except for the scientist who is just vibrating with happiness and a bit of fear because the co-dictator of the world just gave them a gold star.
Extra: Grace also hits Stratt with the 1 2 punch of “A+! Here’s a gold star.” On one of her presentations after staying up for 36+ hours and slaps a gold star on her forehead before conking out on the desk. Carl is in the corner desperately trying not to laugh bc Grace just did this in front of the entire Petrova task force while Stratt is just staring at him in confused amusement. Extra-extra: The mess hall on Stratt’s Vat has a ‘Fridge-board” which is a magnetic board acting as a fridge for all of their papers with A’s on it. Grace just being mortified when he learns that he’s been grading and giving gold stars to the top minds of the world and Stratt having to assure him that it boosts morale and that it’s fine.
(Once he gets sent off to space, everyone in the task force keeps their stars to remember him, because he never said goodbye.)
(Eva looking at her star and throwing it away, because she couldn’t stand the thought of having a gold star from the man she killed.)
It must've already been mind-blowing to Rocky to learn that, yeah humans can just perceive the stars by looking at the night sky. Not that actual stars though, we're technically perceiving the ancient past bc that's how far away the stars are it's basic physics. :) like bro must've been all wtf hello?? But then. To learn that, ohh yes that's how humans used navigate across the oceans of our planet, we looked at the stars and oriented ourselves against them :). Like what kinda mythical BS is that? You measured yourself against the ancient imperceptible parts of the night sky. and trusted that to take you to unexplored parts of the sea? and it worked? Erid doesn't even have a fucking nighttime. No wonder humans are so insane.
