As he softly pulled a blanket over the two of them. He’d use his powers to make it just a little warmer under the blanket for her. The air had cooled quite a bit from the significant rain of the evening. Of course, he wouldn’t do any sleeping. But with the cold blue of the night falling over Amy, he couldn’t help but just… watch. She was so often energized or stressed, that he rarely saw her looking peaceful. But now, comfortably cuddled up beside him?
She looked so… impossibly peaceful. He eventually managed to pull his gaze from his girlfriend, waiting for the night to end. If she wanted to know more about him, especially from before… then tomorrow she was in for a shock.
“Goodnight, Amy… I can’t wait.”
In the morning, they managed to dry off the tent enough to get it packed up and brought back down the trail to the car. While the camping part of the trip had been washed out, the rest of the trip was supposed to be nice and sunny the entire time. Amy was curious where he was taking her next, but every time she asked for more details, he'd simply tell her it was a special surprise.
"Well, wherever it is you're taking me, I bet I'll love it!" She said as she finished loading her things into the car. "So far, this trip's been fun! Even if yesterday was wet and muddy. You ready to get going?"
Maybe he'd give her a hint on the way to their next destination.
A smile crept onto Syphon’s face, “More than ready. I’ve wanted to bring you to this place for a while. I even have a few… extra surprises for you.” He explained, loading the last of their gear into the car.
“I’ve got dinner plans, a hotel reservation… and a cozy little town that hasn’t seen me in a very long time.” He explained, opening the car and letting her inside. He tossed her a travel brochure as she sat down, and started up his car. A resort town on a lake, built around a massive hotel and casino, famous for its evening view of the lake on sunset.
“So… you ever been to sleepy old Crystal Lake? I grew up there, you know?”
((Do not be tricked by his friendly face. He is always scheming))
((Don’t mind me just gonna be hyped about this all week))
Carefully placing his hand atop hers, he let out a sigh, “Ah… it’s only been a life for a little over a year. Until then it was just a series of bad choices and mistakes… you’d have hated me when I was your age.”
He. Huddles closer to the pink hedgehog, pulling a blanket over the two of them,
“Hey, if you want, tomorrow… it’s probably gonna be pretty muddy on the trail. But I could probably use my grapple to swing us through it. Like that guy in the comic books, what was his name? Spider-Man or something?
He chuckled a bit, talking softer as Amy settled in for sleep,
“It’s up to you… But I’m excited for our big stop tomorrow. It’s an important one for me. Don’t wanna miss it. But either way, you should get some sleep. We can talk more in the morning.”
"You think? I'm still a little curious to know what you were like back then," she admitted sleepily. "But I'm glad you're the you you are now... if that makes sense. I like you as you are."
She gave a small chuckle at his suggestion. "That sounds fun. It'll be nice to not have to wash the mud off when we reach town. But even so, I don't mind having to wash a little mud off if need be."
She yawned again. "I'm looking forward to it..." she said, voice trailing off as she fell into a peaceful slumber.

“Wonder if the lake where I grew up is still there…”
(Boy that boss fight thing I snatched is going around huh)
“A little bit of everything and anything to keep myself from going crazy.” The wolf replied, only half-joking, “I was about to start up the grill. Why don’t you come with me? Make sure I don’t mess up your chili dogs.”
He gestured his head towards the empty grill,
“I already made the chili at home. Old family recipe, I think you’ll love it. Just the right amount of kick, you know? You can try some first, if you want. Give us something to do while we catch up.”
As he began shepherding Sonic over to the cooking station, he’d produce a few presents for the hedgehog. Carefully wrapped copies of Treasure Island, The Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and a copy of Casino Royale.
“I’ve always been a bit of a bookworm. Figured you might like something to read when you stop for a rest. None of them should be magic or anything, so… I don’t think you’ll get sucked in!” He joked, stationing himself behind the grill, and taking out a book of matches, quickly lighting the charcoal inside the cooker.
“So, I’ve seen Tails a few times since… but not you. With how stationary I’ve been, you’d think you would eventually stop by on accident!”
Of course, Tails and maybe Silver would be the only ones who knew his true nature so far. But easing Sonic into it now would be… a process. He’d figure it out.
Sonic nodded along. That was the answer he expected — they really weren't dissimilar. After all, a dull life without indulgence wouldn't be a fulfilling life at all. He was sure Gadget would agree.
His eyes followed the wolf's gesture. He was considering the offer, but he was certain Gadget would whip up something delicious regardless. Tails — or was it Amy? — did choose him for the job. Besides, he didn't want to give up his spot just yet.
That was, until Gadget offered the first bite to him. Sonic jumped to his feet. ❝ Sure. I'm always down for a good chili dog! ❞
The moment he saw rectangular objects in the wolf's hands, he knew he was going to be holed up in Tails' house soon after the party. With a smile, Sonic took the gifts and quickly removed the wrapping.
As he listened to Gadget speak, he looked over the front and back covers of each book. He'd been meaning to pick these up — especially Casino Royale. If one of them did end up being magic... Sonic stared at the front cover of Sherlock Holmes, then grinned. ❝ Wouldn't mind helpin' out a detective, though. ❞ It'd definitely be the adventure he has been itching to go on.
He shrugged — it just turned out that way. ❝ 'Least you're here now, right? ❞ he said, eyes roaming around the custom venue — he needed a place for his gifts...
After a second, he decided to quickly set the books down at his previous spot and come back.
His brows furrowed. Didn't...? His memories of Starfall Islands and the months after were hazy ( more so than his memories of the war ), so he had to ask. ❝ Didn't you help me out that one time? ❞
“Ah-ah-ah! Doesn’t count! You were in a weird… alien technology-induced semi-fugue state! You didn’t know who you were! As far as I’m concerned that was… Santiago.” The wolf joked,
“But you’re right. I guess you were technically there by accident. So, we’ll say you owe me another visit. Wacky adventure optional.”
As he spoke, he began setting up the hot dogs to cook, spacing them out evenly, and placing the pot of chili on the side, to begin warming up. He seemed to be pretty experienced in this sort of thing, even if he looked a tiny bit surprised with his own familiarity.
“I’m just glad you’re better now, man. It’s… nice. Being able to just… relax for a while. Be here, with all of you guys again… I’ve missed this. Feels like it’s been forever…”
His gaze wandered off for a second, before darting back down to the food, shaking his head,
“Oops! Sorry! Just… got a bit distracted there. So… what have you been up to since the whole… amnesia thing?”

She moves to gently lean aginst his back, hands running down her partner's arms. "Hey, what can I do to make you feel better?"
“Not really sure much can be done for me right now.” He sighed, gently twisting the bottle in his hand.
Her presence was appreciated, but… how does one ever really cope with losing a child so young. Of course, Venice was with them, and he was more than glad to be a father to his son, but…
It wasn’t the same. Lena was his own flesh and blood. Venice was as much the child of Shadow as himself. She wasn’t even much older than him when she’d been ripped away. By Fang, no less. Often, he found himself questioning why he had held back after Rouge had been shot by the weasel. He had more than enough reason to. Maybe it just didn’t hurt as bad anymore?
He shook his head.
No. The pain would never fade. He’d just gotten better at hiding it.
“I miss my daughter, Rouge. She never even got a chance.”
She couldn't imagine the pain of losing a child so young. In fact the thought alone had her blood run cold. He opened up to her and her heart ached with his.
There was a slow comfort, her arm's gently wrapping around his shoulders wings following suit to offer even the slightest bit of comfort.
"I can't imagine the pain you are experiencing. I am so glad you are able to open up to me. " Rogue sighed carefully. "It wasn't your fault."
“It was. She got killed because of who I was. Who I tried to cut ties with. Sure… I was the target… but that fucking weasel!” He crushed the bottle in his hand. The broken glass cut up his fingers, spilling the last of the whiskey onto the table.
“Bastard took my daughter from me… almost took you from me. And… for some stupid reason… I let him live.”
He relaxed, letting the shards of glass clatter to the table.
“It was so long ago… why does it still hurt so much…?”

“Arrow…”
“He’s a Sonic, alright! More relaxed than mine was, I think. But I guess it makes sense. His fight is over, no more needing to fight Eggman, and all… he’s even got a wife and kid! Some kinda… rock star or something? Never heard of her. But I think I’ve seen her in passing once or twice. In all honesty… even if we don’t talk often, he might be my best friend. Is that a little sad? Eh… maybe. But it’s not like I’m hurting for time on making friends, right?”

“A great kid. I can’t believe he was all by himself for so long. To not even have a single person to be friends with… reminded me of myself. So what other choice did I have but to take him in? The humans there were… well that Donut guy wasn’t so bad. But the government… GUN wouldn’t have left him alone. I did some bad things to keep him safe, but… he deserves a chance to be normal if he wants. Nobody should be forced to be a hero. I can at least give him that choice and teach him if he wants.”

“She’s… perfect. The kindest, most passionate, loving, cheerful person I have ever met. And her being next to me every night makes the total hell I have lived through worth it all. A small price to pay for the happiness she gives me.”
“And that’s what scares me. She is a light, a warmth, a pure joy, that I’m not sure I’ll be able to let go of. I fear how cold life will be when she isn’t here to embrace me. I fear who I’ll end up being when I don’t have that light to guide me. I’m afraid I’m not good enough. Not for her. How could I ever be? I am old, jaded, and tired. She is young, beautiful, and so full of life!”
He taps his fingers together,
“I love her so much. I never thought of myself as getting married, but… if I were to pick… she’d be the first and only choice for me.”
