I will mostly be giving facts about moths, wasps, and bumblebees since I happen to be most knowledgeable about them. I do know a lot about other bugs, but I don’t have as much interest in them. If I ever post a picture without facts, it’s most likely because 1) I was lazy 2) I don’t have the resources to give interesting facts that I know are true. All of the pictures will be my own. I live in a relatively dry area, so sometimes I run out of pictures in which case I will resort to giving facts without pictures. I travel a lot, so most of them are from areas other than my home.

This is a safe space for LGBTQ and neurodivergent people! I am trans and neurodivergent myself, so it would be very hypocritical of me if it wasn’t. Also, feel free to ask anything, I am always open to asks even if they make no sense or are not relevant to my recent posts. Ask away!

Oh, you like dogs? Even the ugly ones? That's weird.. I can't even look at dogs without feeling sick. I mean, of course I like dogs! I just want them as far away from me as possible. It's the dogs fault if it wanders into my house, of course I have to kill them. Dogs obviously know what houses are, it should know the house is mine. Hey did you see that video of the little machine someone made that rips dogs legs off? That's so funny haha. What? Don't be so sensitive! Killing dogs doesn't matter anyway, it's not like they're even real animals. They don't feel anything. I kill dogs all the time, I mean some of them deserve it! Some dogs are just evil. Honestly if I could make some dogs go extinct I would. Why should they be alive if they're so ugly and annoying? They don't even do anything. You really like dogs? There must be something wrong with you.

sighhhh i’m wrong. This isn’t a Polistine pupa it’s probably Vespula. Gonna do some more investigation on the nest itself though because I thought the adult P. dominula wasps we had were from that nest… maybe we just have a lot for no reason?

Blue morpho wing and honey bee wing through a microscope

Under the light of the microscope the blue morpho’s wing does not actually appear blue! This is because the blue coloration is caused not by pigment, but by the structure of the scales reflecting blue. Shining a light through it negates the effect and it appears brown instead.

You can see the hamuli of the honey bee wing on the hindwing (which is the one above in this picture). The hamuli is a series of hooks which connects the hindwing to the forewing during flight. The rings on the end of the wing are just me messing up with the water on the slide lollll

TODAY'S FACT IS

Did you know that the Tricoloured Bumblebee (Bombus ternarius) is a fashion icon among bees with its orange belt? These social friends are found in the northeastern US and much of Canada. Their complex social colonies only last about one season at a time, unfortunately, but they are efficient workers in goldenrods and milkweeds. The queens of each colony are significantly larger than the workers, and young queens very quickly grow in size and weight, storing lots of fat in their abdomen to get by during hibernation. These fuzzy fellas can sting (unlikely to happen unless provoked) and can do so multiple times without losing their stinger (take that, honeybees).

Very cool find and I have GOT to go back to the Grand Canyon to try and find more of these, saw one other observation on the Grand Canyon and it was also pretty rufous. Not enough to have a conclusion but something weird might be going on

The Social Wasps of N.A., by Chris Kratzer states there are 31 species in N.A. flavitarsis has "forms", which I suspect are local races, varieties, depending on habitat. Who I. D. the species & subspecies for you ? as your photos are blurry. Nice genus, some fairly local.

I am on a discord server with a couple of entomologists and insect enthusiasts and we worked together to ID this. It was mostly a process of elimination, and I did look around for other options after finding out about this subspecies but nothing else made any sense. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about this
