On This Day in Cryptid History
December 25th: In 1980, in East London, a group of boys were ambushed by a large, bear like creature. In recent years, a photo was taken showing a large, black creature. Unfortunately, it was later discovered that the creature was a Newfoundland dog.
You can only reblog this on the 3st of January

Cryptid of the Day: Ballynahinch Lake Monster
Description: In 1888, it was said a giant eel was captured underneath a bridge apart of Ballynahinch Castle around a lake in Connemara, Ireland. The story was told by an old man named Patrick King, though he wasn’t interviewed directly by reporter FW Holiday. He was told of the sighting by his father.

Mari-Lwyd
Mari-Lwyd is a South Wales folk tale and tradition whose name translates to ‘grey mare’. It is believed to have originally come from Celtic mythology as a creature able to pass from the overworld to the Underworld. Despite her ancient roots, her modern existence is quite fun. Today, Mari-Lwyd is represented by a stick horse with a horse skull and a white sheet that covers the person carrying it around. Many people decorate the skull with things like flower crowns, among other things. The Visit Wales website explains that Mari-Lwyd shows up around Christmas, going from door to door challenging those who open their door to it. Afterward, the residents and the person toting Mari-Lwyd have a round of alcohol and cakes.

The Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman was a mythical ghostly ship cursed to sail the seven seas for eternity, never allowed to dock. While some say the ship herself is cursed, others say it’s the captain of the Dutchman that was cursed. Either way, the Flying Dutchman holds a long, twisting, and eerie story. While many people call it a fable told as a warning of the seas, sometimes by superstitious sailors, others have reported physically seeing the ship over the past few centuries. These reports span from the 1700s all the way to, surprisingly, World War II; most of these sightings are reported as occurring around Europe, or by Europeans/on European ships. For example, one sighting mentioned by Marine Insight was by a German submarine during WW2 while traveling east of Suez.
The Flying Dutchman is agreed to have originated from the Dutch East India Company’s ship fleet. As such, she would travel between the Netherlands and the East Indies, referring to modern southeast Asia. She was a merchant ship carrying goods like spices and silks, but unfortunately sank in a storm while sailing back to Amsterdam. But how did she become cursed? According to the folklore of the ship, her crew urged the Captain to turn back to safety when they saw the upcoming storm, but he ignored them and, in turn, urged them to continue sailing, even if it meant the ship would sail “until doomsday.” Some versions of the story claim this angered the gods, cursing the ship to quite literally sail forever; others point to the devil overhearing the Captain and cursing him to eternally sail. The same article by Marine Insight claims that the Captain could redeem himself from the devil by way of the love of a faithful woman. In this version, the Captain was allowed to make land once every seven years to find such a woman, and consequentially, salvation.

Are Black-Eyed Kids Horror or Hoax?
The unsettling black-eyed kids phenomenon is described as children and teens who have jet black eyes without any sclera (white), iris, or pupil. They usually have pale skin or a death pallor. They may be wearing normal clothes or white nightgowns.
These black-eyed kids (BEK) usually appear at night. They may knock on doors and windows asking to be let in. Their voices can be monotonous and they may have high-pitched giggles. The advice usually given is to ignore them, and walk away if you encounter them on the street. Reports of BEKs spiked in 2013 after percolating for a number of years, but it has all of the hallmarks of an urban legend, according to paranormal investigator A. Milhorn.
