A Goodbye to Tumblr:

As many of you are already aware, today is the last day that tumblr will allow "adult content" on their site (along with a lot of shitty side effects that come with it you can listen to me rant about it here), against the wishes of just about everyone that uses it. And partially in protest of that, this is the last day I expect to use this site. I know the blog hasnt exactly been active, but it felt appropriate to officially say goodbye in a way.

Thank you to everyone that has followed me until now, I really did enjoy my time here when I was active and the website had a valuable stream of resources and safe spaces for people like me and it certainly did help me out in times where my mental health was wrecked and I was stumbling through my transition. Having graduated, found a good paying job in my field, made some new friends in my town, and substantial progress in my transition, I am now in a much better place than I was when i did use this website and I am proud of the work I have done to get this far.

If you wish to continue following me in my journey you can find me as "SpaceQueenNorah" on Instagram, a few Mastodon servers, and Diaspora. Im "makomankanshoku" on Snapchat. Snap is so far the best way to keep tabs on me but I expect to make use of IG and Mastodon more since I recently created those and are considering them as alternatives to this site (maybe I'll try MeWe or Minds if I dont like them but idk).

Like when I say ‘white people need to talk to bigots because bigots don’t listen to minorities’ I did not say ‘and it will be easy and fun’.

I know it’s easier to be like ~boo hooo the world is so evil and there’s nothing I can dooo~ but it’s statistically and experientially understood, just by fucking 3rd grade logic, that a bigot will be less amenable towards the subject of their bigotry.

Bigots don’t just ~not like~ minorities- they don’t think we’re human. It’s not about whether they agree with you or not in the moment. Like, pause.

Understand this:

Calls to action for white people to oppose bigotry are calls for white people to position themselves as opposition. THEY ARE NOT CALLS FOR ~SUCCESSFUL DEBATE~

Do not think you are expected nor are you likely to just go around arguing with bigots and they’ll go ‘I agree with you because you’re white!’. 

Your job is to be sandpaper.

Every time they open their mouths to make a bigoted joke, or a bigoted remark, or post their shitty bigoted opinion online, you grate against them.

Your job is to make it hard to be a bigot or a fascist. Your job is to ostracize them. Your job is to speak over them the way they love to speak over minorities. Your job is to make it difficult, lonely, annoying, stressful and unwelcome to be a bigot.

When you are white and silent, You are making it easy. You are just letting it happen.

When minorities speak up for themselves, they are in danger, and the bigot just writes off our arguments as the chattering of ‘lessers’.

You, white people, whether you think so or not, are their peers.

Specifically those of you who look and talk like, to an outside observation, your average white american.

Bigots think you all think like them, but are too scared to say it. That, or you’re too much of a coward to stop them.

YOUR JOB IS TO PUSH BACK AND PROVE THEM WRONG.

YOUR JOB IS TO SEPARATE THEM FROM THEIR OWN COMMUNITY AT LARGE.

There are devils among you and if you want to stop being associated with them then fucking prove it. You’re pretty much the only people who can.

Dear people planning to move to pillowfort:

As someone not involved in the development of pillowfort but am a web developer, I think you should lower your expectations, but not for the reason you think.

Pillowfort is a baby. A newborn. A smol bab. If you were here during the early days of Tumblr, think of that. 

Pillowfort simply cannot be the immediate solution to your woes. It needs to be nurtured and cared for to become a mature and happy adult. 

If you want Pillowfort to work, they’ll need feedback, advice, bug reports, etc. This is a chance to make Pillowfort the Ao3 of Fanfiction.net. It’s not gonna happen overnight, you need to give it time and love and it’ll get there. 

If you don’t want to pay money to get into the beta, that’s ok. It will be open to the public soon enough and you won’t have to pay a dime. Their financial model moving forward sounds good (a subscription fee for super extra features), but even an Ao3 model would work swell for them probably. 

We’re living in an interesting time on the internet. Governments across the world are cracking down on content and yet community run websites are starting to thrive more and more. 

Tumblr once upon a time was what Pillowfort is today, but this time, let’s make sure Pillowfort can stay independent from mega corporations.

This is an important thing to think about.  If we want fandom spaces, we have to help care for them – with content, yes, but they’re going to need money and community support to thrive independently.  They’re going to need people willing to be patient when they stumble.  

While there’s ultimately no guarantee any community won’t eventually be sold off to a corporation, we can make it a lot less likely to happen by a) giving it a feasible way to support itself and b) not being absolute assholes to the team behind it.

the situation with tumblr just kinda reinforces the notion that most big social networks are grifts that are just constantly hemorrhaging money and the founders are just trying to trick venture capital investors into thinking they can make money off of ads just long enough for them to sell the site for a fat check and retire while the site slowly dies

this is, tragically, why vine died. you can’t put ads in front of a six second video. tumblr’s lasted much longer, and i don’t expect it to implode overnight, but it’s clearly very difficult to monetize tumblr. remember how staff said they were going to implement an ad program we could make money off of in, oh… 2016? that sure went nowhere
