Okay I want to preface this with the simple fact that I love Jawbone, legitimately one of my favorite npcs. His words to Adaine about her anxiety in freshman year affected me profoundly.

He really, really failed Kipperlilly.

I understand that there was no way he could be fully impartial. When he realized this, he should have referred her to someone else. He didn’t.

As it stands, he tried to be neutral and in doing so let her stew in her anger, let it be directed at the bad kids, never pushed back. A good angle would have been to interrogate the root of her anger (insecurity and/or a different presentation of anxiety, it seems to me, anyway), to ask why it was pointed at peers and not systems, to tell her why directing it at peers can be harmful and that her efforts should be taken seriously, tragic backstory or no.

He wasn’t in danger in this situation! Certainly not in too much danger to do these things (what plenty of counselors do with patients all the time)!

But he asked, instead, what she can do to be a better adventurer.

Jawbone has been so helpful to so many characters, especially Adaine. Adaine had Jawbone to tell her that she wasn’t broken, she was sick. Kip had jawbone too. But she didn’t have that jawbone. She had a Jawbone that bit his tongue, didn’t challenge her or support her, and asked her what she can do to fix her problem by herself.

If Kipperlilly never died, was she recruited before the rest of her party? Did Porter rifle through Jawbone’s records, looking for kids with documented rage issues? Because she’s not a barbarian. He wouldn’t have had an organic opening to approach her. Did he lure her to the library, slip her literature about the power of rage? Did he promise her attention and glory and the recognition she craved? Did she slowly stop going to Jawbone, and start going to Porter with her frustrations, storming into his office and kicking trash cans and screaming while he carefully encouraged her to pursue this path, this feeling?

When it came time for Porter to lead the Rat Grinders into the Mountains of Chaos, did she know that he didn’t plan on convincing them the way she was convinced, but on killing the closest thing she had to friends?

Did she know there was any chance Lucy wouldn’t come back?

i’m gonna be so totally real. the knowledge of kipperlily willingly taking a rage star is actually incredibly sad for her.

like she is a teenage girl who believes herself to be so uninteresting and un-special that she needs to go out of her way to corrupt herself in order to get the outcome/advantage (as she puts it herself) in life that she wants.

like. she’s the only of the rat grinders (that we know of) who willingly took a rage star, she willingly let herself become so full of anger and hate and rage because she thought it might give her an upper hand on other adventures like the bad kids who “got unfair advantages in life” because of the traumatic things they experienced.

i looking at it from the standpoint of her, much like the main characters of fantasy high, being just a teenager makes her choices that much more interesting but ultimately also sad.

Kipperlily being a certified sociopathic murderer down to last lava bath is genuinely like, she could have run on that and actually win the presidency. Like, It’s Augefort. That was an actual drive to do fucked up shit for her goals, could of been for good. Porter being an egomaniacal child grooming loser fucking ruined her life she could of been principal.
