Obsi stayed in close, the number and severity of the hits she and Gold were trading were falling in Obsi’s favor, leaving wounds where her blades landed. Still Gold had that aggravating smile on her face; Obsi would find some way to wipe it off soon enough. “You haven’t even seen half of what I’m capable of!” Her assault only halted when Beast wanted a crack at Gold next. Stepping aside, she didn’t want to close her eyes, she had to see Gold utterly crippled with fear.
A chill ran up her spine as the room changed color, but Obsi’s fury was too great to be overcome by the terror emanating from Beast. Gold had been immediately paralyzed by his aura, but the image she was faced with: his glowing eyes, his hair and fur nearly standing on end, even his voice didn’t sound like it was coming from his mouth. Rather it came from out of the dark corners of the mind of anyone who listened to it. Gold only became more afraid as Beast spoke her worst nightmares to life; being brutalized, made helpless in a massacre she knew deep in her heart she shouldn’t have survived. Once the realization set in Gold went completely mad, screaming, throwing her weapon, and attacking indiscriminately in a desperate attempt to hit either of them. She wasn’t trying to win, only trying to make defeat hurt as little as possible.
The spears were easy for Obsi to dodge as she made her way back to Beast, they weren’t thrown with much purpose but to keep them away. Hearing his plan, she nodded in agreement, waiting for the chance to deal the finishing blow. “Then lets put Gold out of her misery.” With manic laughter she threw her daggers in all directions, turning aside every spear they hit and directing them into his electric field. Shadow tendrils came up from the ground snatching up other daggers both discarded on the ground and mid-flight to lend a hand or distract Gold from what they were doing, It was an elegant dance Obsi performed as she avoided and attacked at the same time, as smooth as it was precise, the perfect blend of attack and defense. All the while the core of Obsi’s body grew hot again, the white radiant light coming from claw her becoming a crimson flame.
“I hope you’re used to pain Gold.” Obsi snarled, a trio of red-hot daggers in her hand. “We’ll make sure you remember every ounce of it the two of us inflict on you. Forever!” She hurled them with all of her strength, and as they were a few feet from Gold they shattered, enveloping her entire body in glass shrapnel and pushing her into the makeshift wall of electrified spears.
As Obsi parried the small spears, Beast hit them against his destabilizer, bouncing them off towards her as she had a wall of electricity behind her. He could only hope this would work. But, it did.
Thrust against her own spears, Gold felt every ounce of electricity seep into her body. She could feel herself breaking, but she could only laugh at what he said. “Another animal, huh? Deep inside, we’re all animals. We’re just tamed.” Flashbacks of her being beaten by the twins sailed through her mind, reminding her over and over again of what happened. And to think it’s from the same person. It might not be the twins, but they’re still in him. They’re still there. Gold had never seen such a pair other than those two fight so well. She had to admit, they had her respect.
On the verge of poofing, Gold only had one last thing to say to the both of them. “I expect to see this level of fighting from now on. My job here is done.” With that, she poofed, and her cut clattered to the floor. Beast leapt off the wall, and onto the floor, picking up her cut, recalling what she had said when Red and Obsi first met her in the sparring room. He narrowed his eyes as it clicked. “Gold…she knew about your friends coming sometime soon. She must have overheard White and Silver during their conversation in a side room. She planned this so we’d be a few pegs up the next time we see them…she must have sensed me when she first met you and Red.” He handed the cut to Obsi, impressed with Gold’s planning. The woman used herself as a fighting dummy to get Beast out. With tactic level planning like that…that’s why she was leader of the war section for the metals. “Usually, I just shatter my opponents…but she’s done us a favor. In return, I will spare her life.”
Looking around the room, he groaned at seeing the damage done. “I get the feeling it’ll be a bit before Red and you can have that sparring match. They’ll need time to repair this.” He was interrupted by the sound of the doors opening, and the other curious metals pouring into the room. Beast groaned. “Oh yeah, these guys. I forgot they were still there. Hopefully nobody got impaled from one of Gold’s mini-spears…”’
Silver came sprinting into the room as the other metals parted ways, a spew of words coming out of his mouth. “Oh thank the stars, you’re still alive, my weapons worked! You’re still alive, you’re-” He shut up as Obsi handed him Gold’s cut. “Oh my, you really did beat her…I assumed she’d be on the floor, still in form. No matter, I’ll leave her on my workshop bench and wait for her to wake up.”
Despite the inferno in her soul shouting at her to make sure Gold suffered more, Obsi stopped as she collapsed, her form glitching out. As she said her last words and poofed, Obsi walked up to Beast, holding Gold in his hands. “You’re wrong.” She spoke to the Metal. “We’re not animals; even wild animals would have lost against you. We’re soldiers. It’s just hard to tell the difference sometimes. You’d know that if you had to fight actual monsters that were once like you. Then again, you might have not survived.” Hearing Beast make sense of Gold’s logic, Obsi had to admit that she was right about other things; there was a savage inside every soldier. And as the head of the military she would have access to most of the security footage, enough to have known of their plight.
“Aegirine and Hypersthene taught me how to fight, they taught a lot of Crystal Gems how to fight. Every time they were on the battlefield, they threw everything they had, everything they were into every fight. Their entire beings were devoted to defeating their enemy. It wasn’t too different from fighting Gold now that I think about it.” Obsi sighed, her vibrating slowing to a stop as she was handed Gold. She was glad that she had her gauntlet, otherwise she would be worrying about overloading right now. “Whether it’s their Metal heritage or not, we can’t come at them with anything less than all of our strength. Gold showed us that much.” Even if that wasn’t the case, the thought of killing Gold never came to her mind. Like Obsi said, they weren’t animals, and besides she knew that there were worse fates than death.
Looking around at the arena, holes and scorch marks on every surface, Obsi groaned. “It’s for the best that our duel got delayed, all this mess with Gold killed the mood. There’ll be plenty of time for our fight.” Soon the doors opened and the crown poured in, Silver meeting them first. Whatever congratulations he had for her and Beat stopped when Gold was put was in hands.
Obsi smiled at him. “Everything’s fine. There shouldn’t be any hard feelings between us and Gold anymore.” Walking away to the far wall, she grabbed Gold’s full sized spear and slung it over her shoulder before coming back. “She won’t mind if I take this right?” Reaching Beast, she patted him on the back.
“We worked up quite a sweat didn’t we? Time for us to hit the showers.”
