Spartan Gabriel Thorne
Indie, Minorly-Selective, Canon Muse(s).
“May I have this dance, Captain?” - @the-honorable-spartan
Artemis turned, at the sound of someone clearing their throat behind her, and surprise flickered across her features at the sight of Spartan Gabriel Thorne standing before her to ask if he could... Dance with her? What?
<Politeness and social rules would suggest you gracefully accept, even if you’re not entirely certain about how to dance with a partner.>
Noted, Seeker.
“I... Sure.” She inclined her head in a nod. “I’ll give it my best shot.”
Gabriel’s extended hand waited patiently between him and Artemis as he ran his gaze over her, curious now that he was within more than fifty feet of her for the first time since Lord Hood’s ‘Celebration of Humanity’s Finest’ Ball had commenced almost six hours ago.
That curiosity was oh so very rewarded by the single most beautiful sight he’d ever laid eyes on—well, second most beautiful. Artemis Arcturus Katona in a dress uniform and it was glorious. Of course, then she actually responded to his question and he blinked rapidly as he processed her words..
Yes.
“Best honor I’ve ever received.”
The smirk was playful, but his eyes were downright affectionate.
Sure, she had been the one to invite Gabriel to the celebration as her plus one. She knew that he would have wanted to enjoy her company, and he needed the break from dealing with the sentient game of Russian Roulette that was Fireteam Majestic. As described by Thorne himself— the only member he could more than tolerate was his best friend Tedra Grant. But... The fact was, she had barely had a chance to talk to him all day.
Not for lack of trying on both of their parts, either.
The fact that he had asked her to dance, however, had caught Artemis off-guard. It wasn’t that she didn’t know how; dancing on her own, she could do just fine. But she’d never danced with a partner, and she was doing her best to not feel incredibly self-conscious due to the fact that for the first time in her life, she was wearing Naval dress.
Still. It was a relief to finally spend some time with her lover dear friend, and she accepted his proffered hand with grace, admiring the fact that he appeared at ease in his own Spartan Branch formal dress uniform— a far cry from her.
“You’re tense.”
It wasn’t a question, nor an accusation. Simply an observation.
He wanted to question her more, if anything just to figure out what was wrong. But questioning Artemis about personal information in a room full of people that not only did she not know, but some were in fact literally Office of Naval Intelligence Brass would’ve registered as a stupid choice even for someone who’d known her for five minutes.
Gabriel had known her for five years. Chronologically, that is. In actuality it was probably getting closer to a year total of actually being in contact.
“Hey- we can avoid the crowd.”
He’d figured it was the crowd that was getting her, too many unknowns too close. So with a gentle grip on her hand he b-lined for the edge of the room, in fact it was so edge-of-something that the BRAVO-6 balcony door was right in that corner.
“Better?”
His final question was posed as he spun on his heel when they reached the corner, gently threading his fingers through hers—a little more intimate than two acquaintances ought to be, but if no one looked hard enough it was alright.

Thoughts on Gabriel “Yes ma’am” Thorne?
“Spartan Thorne is... One of those Fours you can’t help but keep a close eye on the career of. From what I’ve observed of his behaviour, both on the field and off, he’s certainly more alike in nature to his predecessors — the Twos, and Threes — than to his own generation.
His curious nature has had a tendency to land him in trouble with his superiors— namely that Spartan DeMarco finds it frustrating when Spartan Thorne goes off book. On the other hand, however, this has lent itself to creative solutions that lead to Majestic getting themselves unstuck from a particularly tight corner. A double-edged sword.
Make no mistake in that his knowing what he is doing is not due to cockiness; rather, it is self-assurance and experience gained from working with the Office of Naval Intelligence for a number of years at the head of his own fireteam.
He is also incredibly sweet and dependable by nature. You could find no truer friend than a man like him.”

3) Well, we know that Artemis was definitely intrigued by Thorne. His attitude impressed her, and she wished that there was more people in the galaxy like him.
As for Gabriel, that man was absolutely starry-eyed for Artemis right from the very first. That’s kind of a core facet of his character: the whole you’re a literal hero and I’m in awe of you thing. I imagine if he met the Master Chief he’d probably spontaneously combust.
Although, when it comes to Artemis, after his first encounter with her, there’s also an added air of wow, she’s pretty, I want to know more about her / she’s consuming my every waking thought what’s happening going on as well.
11) I can’t say if I actually have any nicknames that come to mind. Not yet, at any rate. I know that it’ll very likely change in future, however, but at this point in time, the only potential nickname I have is Artemis calling Gabriel “beloved”... but then you already know that I can’t decide if it’s Gabe or Carter who gets that nickname :P
15) Probably this song; it’s really pretty and I think it fits well.

A single shot. Sharp, fierce, like the harsh bark of a wolf.
The jackal dropped dead.
For a moment, adrenaline and muscle memory had him dropping a hand to his webbing and fishing out a new magazine. Then, right as Artemis reached him, his brain finally registered the lack of gunfire around him and realized—
“It’s over, soldier. He’s dead.”
What?
Gabe looked up from where he was charging his weapon after inserting a new magazine, eyes meet Artemis’ even through her visor. Not that he knew that. That.. that was not the usual awed look Spartans got from Marines and Army when they saved their asses.
Thankful? Yes. Awed? No.
And Thorne? Thorne just smiled his small, private smile at the comparatively massive Spartan kneeling next to him, eyes as curious as ever as he lifted himself to a kneel—ow.
Gabe winced as his head twinged when he moved. Right—he’d been glanced by a focus rifle that had knocked his helmet clean off.
“Thank you, Spartan..?”
He knew Spartans were infamously protective of their names. But.. something.. something just compelled him to leave the question obvious in his sentence.
@indomitus-ferox
For a moment, it was all she could do to stand there, uncertain. She wasn’t Jorge, able to calm with barely a word and a gentle look, nor was she Carter, who would immediately have jumped in with a basic medic’s expertise to help the trooper hold together until he could be seen to properly. And she was still getting used to dealing with other soldiers— before Noble, it had been months since last she’d been deployed with baseline humans as backup.
That lone wolf stuff stays behind. Clear?
I’m trying, damn it. I am. But you weren’t raised half in isolation like me. You weren’t deployed solo more often than not.
None of the other Spartans were like her. She wondered, for a brief, bitter moment, how long it would take for them to realize. For them to abandon her.
A beat later, Artemis shook herself — a movement that wouldn’t even show through all of her armour’s plating. Now was not the time to feel lost. She had to focus. And to do that, she needed to pay attention to the situation.
The way he asked her name gave her pause, different titles jumbling in her mind. The grey ghost. Lieutenant. Noble Six. Three-Twelve. Arty.
The last one was so long ago…
She thought that she was Artemis, but—
“Spartan Bravo Three-Twelve. You can call me Six, though.” It was a safer bet. It wasn’t that she was secretive about her name— not in the least. She just… Didn’t yet know who she truly was. Still trying to work that out.
Her visor flashed, aqua blue giving way to clear glass composite. Closest she could get to removing her helmet while on the battlefield; something that humanized her.
“Looks like you might be needing some Biofoam. Hurts pretty bad, right?”
While Gabe couldn’t tell if she physically reacted to the obvious question in words, he could absolutely tell she hesitated, that she was considering.
She didn’t immediately answer with her number, and that, Thorne knew, spelled out a lot about her.
And that made him wonder—who was she?
Who did she want to be? Had she ever had the chance to find out?
Then she depolarized her visor, and Gabe’s lips parted slightly in completely genuine surprise. He hadn’t been expecting that even slightly, let alone the face revealed underneath it.
She’s beautiful..
Gabe blinked, marginally appalled that such a thought had slipped into his mind at such an inopportune time. And after a moment, he offered Artemis a small smirk that said ‘You’re different. That’s interesting.’ It was the smirk his squad mates often called the ‘Thorne Thinking Thoughts’ smirk.
“Thorne.”
He knew that his name was absolutely listed on her visor, but hearing it from the person just.. had a different effect.
“Save the foam for someone who needs it, Si—“ he coughed, “ma’am. No charred skin or melted brain, just proximity burns.”
That small, amused, curious smile had never left his face.

// Hey guys, so, small announcement.
I’m back. I know I say this a lot and then vanish for months.
But, I think this time it’s for good.
I love rping, I love this community. I always found myself trying to match every post length because I wanted to be that good for my amazing partners.
Sometimes I can fill three phone screens with ease, other times I can barely fill one.
I’m just gonna go with the flow from now on.
So, I hope this doesn’t put anyone off. But, I’d like to think this will make me more consistent.
the-honorable-spartan:
Thorne had long ago developed a system of thought to maintain during any combat operation: APRR.
Analyze. Predict. React. Repeat.
The Covenant, in his experience, didn’t prove too inventive of on-the-fly tactics.
Analyze: The first wave was just Grunts, and a few Jackals on the wings that the group’s outriders took care of with ease. No casualties, and the civvies didn’t get too jumpy.
Predict: If the Covenant stuck to their usual doctrine, the squad’s next engagement would be worse. Likely with either a Brute or a— he didn’t even get to finish said prediction, a collection of Grunts, a duo of Jackals, and a Brute. Exactly what Thorne was expecting. The Spartan would assign herself the Brute, that was obvious—any second now the civilians would start to spook—and leave the rest for him and the UNSC regulars.
Lo-and-behold, the civilians started to scare. Not that he could blame them, his first encounter with a Brute had been rightly terrifying.
Then his thoughts turned from the civilians to the Covvies as he saw two Jackals vanish from sight out the far door, ascending what looked like a staircase. Why?
Then he remembered the overlook to the squad’s left flank, with a separate staircase leading up to it in this room. They were going to be outflanked.
They’d been spotted.
React: Cox opened up, and one of the remaining Jackals’ heads exploded in a haze of purple mist. Immediately the other troopers opened up, taking cover behind various walls, pillars and barriers. Thorne himself fired off a five-round burst at a Grunt and sent it spiraling to the floor.
No one was moving for the overlook.
The main body had the civilians covered well enough. If they were being flanked, they were all done for.
“Perez, switch!”
The first words Thorne had spoken in so long he’d actually forgotten the exact number.
“Copy!”
The other Army trooper barked back, shifting from his position in the veritable firing line they were putting up, he stepped back and took up a position by the civilians.
Thorne didn’t want any longer, vaulting the concrete barrier he’d taken cover behind and sprinting for the stairs to the overlook. A wash of plasma whizzed by his head, and he fired a suppressive spray of 7.62 in reply to his right, taking the stairs two at a time as he heard distinct Jackal screeching above him.
Another two seconds and he’d crested the stairs, greeted by the sight of a single Jackal stood at the edge of the overlooking aiming its rifle. But the instant it clocked onto his footsteps it whirled, raising its rifle and firing. But Thorne rolled left, coming up behind an outcropping that barely shielded him from—Jesus!
He ducked instinctively as the shot from the focus rifle took away a chunk of his cover, then immediately popped out and put two three-round bursts into the Jackal. That is to say, one burst, the other hitting the wall as it dodged. But it was staggered.
Good enough for him.
Thorne vaulted his cover, charging the Jackal as it recovered, hearing bullets and plasma roar roughly a dozen feet below. He slammed his shoulder into the wounded alien, sending it tumbling to the floor below.
Then came the second squawking noise from behind him.
The second Jackal.
Immediately, Thorne pulled a 180, raising his rifle only to throw himself to the left as he saw the focus rifle flare—fuck!
Gabriel simply held the trigger as he fell, a dozen rounds utterly shredding the avian creature. The instant he was sure it was dead, Thorne took his left off his MA37 and clawed at his scorching helmet, throwing it off the overlook and letting the object that had just saved his life plummet, a focus rifle scar etched into the side of it just shy of actually blowing his head off. But the third degree burn currently causing every pain receptor on his head to flare was certainly a negative from the situation.
From there, Thorne climbed up to a kneel, shouldering his rifle and raining down fire on the aliens, trying desperately to ignoring the mind-numbing pain on the side of his head.
@wcrspite
“We’re on it, ma’am,” Kotevski answered for both himself and Wyman, the moment the Spartan issued the order to calm the civilians down. The ODST and his fellow soldier got to work immediately, backing the civilians away from the line of fire, keeping their heads down and talking to them quietly. In the same instant, the three Troopers stepped into the fray. Lead by Cox’s example, Thorne and Haxgild opened fire, the latter keeping the Grunts pinned while the first two took out the Jackals.
In the meantime, Artemis tangled with the Brute.
A Captain was relatively minimal issue; while they held decent seniority and had better armour and weaponry than their lesser counterparts, they lacked the power armour and energy shielding than Chieftains and others of higher rank. All she had to do was keep the bastard’s attention, bringing it to a boiling point of rage, before closing in for the kill.
Easy. Routine.
The bumps so far weren’t hurdles, weren’t impossible obstacles. They would overcome this without any casualties. She knew that it would only get more difficult, as more and more Covie leaders dropped to pick up the slack. But for the time being, they could press the attack, use their advantage, get the civilians to safety and off the planet.
Easy. Routine.
What was not routine was, as the Brute’s body dropped before her, a surprised yell splitting the air, coming from one of the Troopers. Whipping around, she flicked her wrist; a flung combat knife landed in the throat of a Grunt with barely a look in its direction. For a moment, she could not spot any signs of danger, and wondered if someone had merely been caught off-guard. Nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary. Not as far as she could tell.
All was green.
Until she saw that the youngest Trooper — G. Thorne, her HUD had told her, helpfully — had abandoned his helmet, and was firing with reckless abandon at a last-known sniper’s position. That was wrong. That was not routine.
For a heartbeat, the Spartan was frozen with uncertainty. The pause was filled with action a fraction of a second later; the moment the Jackal popped its head up again, undaunted by the hail of 7.62mm rounds coming its way, Artemis raised her scavenged DMR and fired a single round into the creature’s head. It didn’t even have time to squawk; the bird-like alien crumpled without a sound, focus rifle clattering to the ground somewhere below.
She then rushed forward, dropping to a kneel at Thorne’s side, eyes flickering beneath her visor as she checked him over.
“It’s over, soldier. He’s dead.” she told him softly, wondering how badly he was injured.

// Does your muse keep anything sentimental? If so, what do they keep and why?
He does! Thorne keeps casings from battlefields, pieces of armor of fallen marines and troopers, even the joystick from a downed Broadsword.
Everything but the casings he keeps because he likes to remember those who gave their lives to protect others. The casings.. well.. honestly he doesn’t know. He just.. does. Every one he carves the date, planet, and location into.
What does your muse need? This can be something material or something abstract.
He dislikes being alone. To the point that he will actively seek out even those he isn’t fond of just to be around someone.
