Occupy Ottawa update (Mon, Oct. 17)

Occupy Ottawa closed its 3rd day with a general assembly in Confederation Park after the movement held a spirited demonstration through Ottawa streets Sunday.

On Oct. 17, the 40-50 tent-strong occupation remains after rumours that the National Capital Commission (NCC) was going to vote on a possible eviction. As a result, the scheduled emergency rally to be held this morning at NCC offices did not happen.

On Monday evening, over 100 gathered for a general assembly, a daily occurrence since the occupation began on Saturday. Dedicated participants braved rain and cold temperatures to reach consensus on determining when future assemblies would occur. It was decided that meetings would take place every morning to help determine agenda items and proposals for the general assemblies to be held at 6:30 pm every evening.

The Direct Action Committee also put forward a proposal for a protest on Wednesday to rally at a Canadian International Council (CIC) panel on deepening Canada-US integration. The demonstration will leave from Confederation Park at 5:00 for the Sheraton Hotel on Albert Street.

In the meantime, both public interest and the tent city continue to grow.
