Any Advice?

Hi guys! Somebody very very dear to me has recently become quite depressed. They seem to suffer from episodes of depression somewhat regularly, though I’d estimate it’s not for more than a week to a month and it doesn’t seem to happen more than once or twice a year. This is just from my observation, of course. Sometimes it’s hard to get them to open up about it at all.

Anyway! They’re very capable with pushing through these periods and are not in any way medicated. I have never been concerned they will self-harm or anything like that. However, it still worries me greatly to see them suffer. It’s heartbreaking to feel so unable to help.

So! I’m reaching out to those of you with loved ones who suffer from depression or those of you who suffer from depression yourselves... what’s the best thing you have been able to do for your depressed loved one /have had somebody do for you while you were depressed?

What helps make these periods of time easiest to cope with? What helps encourage you/your loved one?

And, specifically for those of you who deal with depression... what is one thing you really really wish the people who care about you knew to not do/say? I know that sometimes the best intentions can just make things harder, so... yeah.

Any input would be really appreciated. I want to be the best support I can be. Maybe it’s also worth noting that my loved one is extremely independent and would be unwilling to reach out for any kind of professional help and is generally unwilling to include others in their support system, besides myself (somewhat).
