⚠️ IMPORTANT – TUMBLR SCAM WARNING ⚠️
I was almost scammed on Tumblr today, so I want to write this all down to warn others.
Someone messaged me saying they had been scammed by a fake account that was apparently impersonating me.
Instead of reporting the copycat, they claimed they accidentally reported my account and that they and their friends had all sent multiple reports.
According to them, because of these “reports”:
my account would be deleted,
my IP address would be blocked, and
there would be “legal action” taken against me.
Obviously that freaked me out at first.
I asked them to send me the fake copycat account and to contact Tumblr to tell them it was a mistake. Their account looked kind of legit at first glance too profile picture, banner, bio, etc.
But then things started to get weird.
Instead of sending the copycat blog, they sent me a very badly edited “official” email that was supposedly from Tumblr Support about my account being reported. Then they told me I had to contact Tumblr Support on Discord to fix it.
They kept sending messages like:
“Quick, before it’s too late.”
“You need to contact them now or your account will be gone.”
At that point it finally clicked: this is a scam.
So I googled it and surprise, Tumblr themselves warn about this exact tactic in their help articles about scams.
Red flags & what to watch out for
Here are some things I noticed that might help you if this happens to you:
The scam accounts look “legit” at first glance
They usually have:
a bio that sounds normal
But if you look closer, they’re often brand new throwaway accounts.
In my case, the person claimed to be an artist, but:
there was no art posted at all
the whole blog was just random reblogs
everything had been reblogged in the last ~10 hours
That’s a huge red flag.
Real platforms do not handle reports through random third-party apps
Tumblr (and pretty much every legit platform) does not:
ask you to contact “Support” through Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.
send you to some random DM account to “fix” reports
Proper support goes through:
official emails you can find listed on their official website
If someone claims to be “Tumblr Support” on Discord, it’s fake. Full stop.
Google it before you panic
If someone messages you something like “I accidentally reported you and now your account will be deleted,”
stop, breathe, and google it.
Searching something like: “Tumblr someone said they mistakenly reported me scam”
will immediately show you Tumblr’s own page about avoiding scams, plus posts from other users talking about the same thing.
Same goes for other weird messages on any platform:
Check Reddit, help pages, or community posts.
If it’s a known scam, you’ll usually find proof in seconds.
Scammers rely on fear and panic to make you act fast without thinking.
They want to push you to another platform, rush you, and eventually get you to click shady links or give them personal info.
be suspicious of anyone claiming they “accidentally reported you,”
don’t contact “support” through Discord or any random account,
check the age and content of the blog that messages you,
and always double-check things before you freak out.
