talking about film stuff alone to the exclusion of book elements for a minute: it really reads to me that the thing actually getting to stratt in her last scene with grace isn't that she has to ask him to die for the cause, we've already established that it's not difficult for her to do that under these circumstances, it's that she has to do it against his will. her voice doesn't start going thin like she's holding back tears until she starts to explain that that they're going to force him despite his refusal, and three times over she asks him to stop fighting back, escalating to violence against him is the specific part she doesn't like. if he stays then he dies in thirty years with everyone else, if he goes then he dies in thirteen years as part of saving everyone else and also probably goes out less painfully, the death is broadly the same either way so it's not part of her arithmetic, but she didn't want to have to make his last memories on earth so distressing.

I saw a post around somewhere that I wish I'd saved about how it might have been less painful for grace if stratt had just told him from the get-go that he didn't have a choice about getting on the ship, and I think I agree; subjectively I feel like having a "no" ignored rather just being ordered into something in the first place is a worse experience. stratt not being upfront about it contradicts her usual "you now live on a boat" modus operandi, it prolongs the process and adds extra steps when they're already running on so little time, and I think it might be the one genuinely selfish decision she makes, letting grace believe he has a say in the matter for those three hours gives him time to agonize about it in his Dish Antenna Array Of Despair and opens him up to really feel that betrayal and removal of autonomy as hard as possible. and, let's be real, she goes into that meeting 99% sure he's not going to agree, that's why she has a doctor on standby and guards ready to give chase, but up until his last "you just can’t talk me into it" she's hoping that maybe he'll just say yes and she won't have to do something awful to someone she likes. keeping the opportunity open for the easy way instead of immediately taking the hard way also leaves the door open for the significantly more likely hardest way.

Listen, at least they arent just using some shitty ai CC system like most companies. They hire a real person to do the closed captioning and it's better than at least half of the CCing on stuff like Netflix or Disney+. If a few misspelled names are the price of pretty good captioning with details like accents and intonation, then it is a price I am happy to pay.

you have got to have higher standards than "at least it's not AI," my dude bro gamer man. if a real physical person is doing a bad job, they don't get a pass because somewhere else a large language model is doing worse.

it is not just misspelled names. (not to dismiss misspelled names as not a problem; when a dimension 20 character's name is getting misspelled as another dimension 20 character's name, it's a problem.) it is words that make no grammatical sense in context, it is misspelled guesses at place names and regional turns of phrase, it is [mumbling] and [crosstalk] rather than any effort to transcribe sentences which are replied to seconds later in a scene. it is inaccurate captions that lead to misunderstandings that the talent involved got in the comments to clarify. (and how many people who didn't look in those comments still think this chef pronounced gnocchi really weird when she actually said goat cheese??)

when captions create misunderstanding instead of resolving it, they are not doing their job.

i do not care if captions are fun. (though in my self-reblog with a suggested solution to this problem i did acknowledge the Fun Sound Effect Descriptions person as important to the dropout captions brand.) captions are not a treat or bonus feature, they are an accessibility aid. they need to be functional. for anyone who cannot understand the audio track — whether that's a deaf or hard of hearing viewer, a viewer with an audio processing disorder, a viewer whose understanding of written english is better than their understanding of spoken english, or someone who is watching a clip on social media on mute because they're in public and don't have headphones! all of these people should get to understand what is being said on their screen!

I've made this exact post like 3 different times atp but. It's endlessly funny when people (especially tech company people) treat Asimov's three laws as a legit proposed framework for Artificial Intelligence safety when like. Nearly every single Asimov story they're featured in involves something going wrong as a result of a robot trying to follow three three laws in a situation that makes execution of the laws ambiguous or contradictory. They're not a guideline for legit AI programming they're a plot device designed to cause problems due to interacting in weird ways with complicated hypothetical situations!

idk what neurodivergent young adult needs to hear this but you are NOT supposed to give 100% at your job. all i am asking for is some basic double data entry-style qc.

get one person who knows NYC really well, one person who knows LA really well, and the person who already does very funny descriptions of sounds and noises.

have all of them caption the episode.

where 3/3 agree, use that caption. if 2/3 agree, use that caption unless the remaining person is a relevant subject expert. if all disagree, bring in someone else to review the options. preferably the person whose audio is being captioned but honestly i'd take anyone who understands the context of the moment.
