Erika stood inside her living room, enjoying the humid night air with her shoulders and above poked out the window nearest her front door, a cigarette between her left pointer and middle fingers.

Her eyes are dark, almost soulless as she watches the apartment complex across from hers with an unnerving intensity, dark red hair ghosting over her face. The smoke from her cigarette pooled into the night air, twisting like a ballet dancer on a inky stage. A calm contrast to the chaos that had occurred over the days prior. She wondered how that one man was doing. The one who always seemed to be wearing that same blue sweater like a cartoon, and always looked like an aggro dog. He never seemed to like people. It’d probably kill him due to the conditions of this apocalypse.

But what does she care? It’s not like it’s killing her.

Soon enough, a dreadful sound would fill her ears.

One, that she may already recognize, like a muscle memory of some sorts. When others would seek shelter in order to have a roof under their head, away from the sun, and... the visitors.

The young woman eventually got up, to check if there was anyone.

But... it's one that she doesn't want to meet.

Anyone, but him.

The infamous Pale Visitor.

Oh, the way he looks puts a chill down her spine. His disgusting figure, the way his body doesn't look suited to him, the way his skin droops in such a manner… it all puts her off.

Then, as if he already knew she was there without her saying anything, his grin grew.

"...Howdy!"

He says, with that deep, raspy voice. He tried to show this weird friendliness, but she knew, as well as he did, that he was anything but that.

Erika looked at the inhuman frame outside from the..safety…of her peep-hole, a slight nausea in her throat as she looked at the un-even placement of bone under his flesh, just barely visible through white skin making hers crawl. How did he even know she was there?

Watching him intently, she responds, her voice strong and unwavering and slightly monotone.

“Hello?. Do I know you, or does my roomie. Because I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen..your.? Face before.” She huffed, taking another lungful of smoke in softly.

He remained silent, looking around. It seemed like he was looking at the exterior of the house; it was eerie how he moved. So.. calculated. His hands looked wrinkly, disgusting.. didn't look like he moisturized at all. Remember kids, moisturize and take a shower, unlike this man here.

I'm just here.. to visit.

He could smell the cigarette coming from inside the house, and you could see him sniffing. He leans closer to the peep-hole, still with his hands crossed.

He had the courtesy to continue the small talk, but he wasn't trying to make her ease up, oh no.. never mistake that for him trying to be nice.

I know you. What a nice door you have.

She tenses, gritting her teeth and internally cringing at the sound.

“Ssssure would be. Are you here for something.? Cause like.. I’m kinda busy.”

She lied. Anything to get the unnerving figure off her doorstep and away from her..apartment? House? Whatever. Her roommate better be back soon. Hopefully he’ll see the creep at the door and come in through the window at the back.

She shifts from side to side, looking awkwardly through the peephole.

He leaned away from the peephole. The silence was unbearable. The tension was more clear than ever.

Then, he asked a question. A simple one, at that.

One that you heard somewhere on television, a phrase that was warned that if you hear it, you are to not respond..

...

Are you alone?
