Nissan, please build an electric Miata.
Before anyone feels compelled to remind me, yes, I know the Miata is a Mazda. I also know that of all the vehicles on the road today, the Miata is the closest to being a spiritual successor to the original Datsun Roadsters from the 60′s. I mention these two cars together because they were/are both considered sports cars, even though neither were ever very powerful. Instead, they were fun to drive.
Automakers such as Tesla and Porsche are currently pushing the envelope on the upper reaches of electric super sedans, each causing the other to step up their game, and more are coming. But down at the bottom end of the electric spectrum, we have some options; Model 3, Bolt, e-Golf, and the Leaf, but we lack anywhere a small, fun to drive, two seat roadster. Even Tesla’s upcoming Roadster will be a 2+2 configuration, not to mention it’s stratospheric performance capabilities (and subsequent pricetag). No, what I would love to see is something small and affordable (like a Miata) but with electric power. This is where Nissan comes in.
Nissan would be, I think, the best positioned to create this vehicle. They have made some incredible driver’s cars throughout their history. Combine that with the battery knowledge they have gained from producing the Leaf. Mix in some healthy competition/performance benchmarking from the Miata. Top it all of in the iDX concept with the top cut off and the Datsun name that they recently resurrected for use in India, and I think we would have something truly amazing.
I’ll take mine in Turquoise.
I’ve had this thought rolling around in my head for a while now, and as such have felt compelled to put it down on (digital) paper.
