This was the first time Kitty had been outside since Zemo had shown her the fake version of herself. That time, everything seemed fine with the world, but now it looked like a natural disaster had come through the area and destroyed much of the city. She wasn’t sure what had happened or why the city looked the way it did, but something had happened and Kitty felt fear for all of her friends and family. Her face was that of sadness as she grabbed the mask and looked at the assortment of weapons at their disposal. She didn’t want to do this but she had to in order to keep Bobby safe. She opted for a staff, knowing it would do the least amount of damage and with her time in Japan, she’d know how to use it properly. “There’s nothing we can do,” she said dejectedly as she pulled over her mask. “We don’t have a choice.”

“There’s gotta be something…” Peter trailed off but the look Kitty gave him spoke otherwise. “I’ve seen him kill someone for something small. We can’t risk it.” Looking to the goon that was accompanying them, she sighed and started towards the building. Professor, if you can hear me, please…please find us she thought, hoping the Professor would hear her.

Looking over the two of her friends, she gave a sigh before nodding and agreeing with Kitty, “Fine, let’s do this then. We can make it as clean as possible, so the least amount of people get hurt.” Really, that was what made her stomach churn at this plan. Stealing, fine, things can be returned but hurting innocent people. That she could not stand. Every molecule in her body revolted against the very idea. All this thinking about it made it worse. Stop thinking; just act. So, turning on her heel, Kate began moving toward the science building. Her heartbeat was so loud it felt like her head was going to explode. Trying to distract herself from the sound she spoke up again, “Kitty, if you can phase you should get what he needs. I can handle the guards and Pete, could you deal with the alarms electronic security?”

Everything that had happened recently was putting Zemo off many of the plans he had set up. Although some good could come out of all the chaos that was happening now. People were off their game. They didn’t know who to trust or who was who. While he had planned to execute this part of his plan later it seemed like he might as well take advantage of the situation. He had transported three of his new “accomplices” into an abandoned building in the heart of Brooklyn. Looking at Kitty, Kate and Peter, he smiled. “Welcome to your first job. And because I am such a nice host to the three of you I’m allowing you outside.” Zemo handed over a file to the Hydra operative next to him. “A few blocks from here there is a new science building holding a lot of secrets that I want. It’s been privately funded which means their security is no joke. But with everything happening it has slipped but that doesn’t mean they won’t be there. I’ve given your friend here, all the information and parts that I want. All you three need to do is get in, get what I need, then destroy the rest. Destroy the building if you have to. Should be easy enough for you three. Let’s just hope your other friends don’t come by to fuck this up.” he said looking between the three of them. “I’m being generous enough to allow you to use your powers and skills here. But do know that I am still watching you as is our friend here,” he said motioning to the Hydra agent. “Incase you weren’t already clear if you mess this up, if you tell anyone who you are, you try to run, you do anything to compromise this mission, I will not hesitate you kill your friends back at our home.” he smiled, before reaching into his bag to pulling out black masks and tossed it at them. “Cover up your faces? We don’t want anyone knowing you’ve turned into rule breakers do we? Now get going.”

Kate hated this. She hated being blackmailed. She hated being threatened. She hated being outside but unable to leave. But she hated Zemo the most. He made her feel helpless when he ordered her around like a captive. Kate was not helpless, she was a hero. But still, she could do nothing to get herself out of this situation. At least, she currently had no plans that seemed plausible. Grabbing the mask, she quickly pulled it over her head and hopped out of the van first, not capable of spending another second with Zemo. As she looked down the street, Kate felt oddly bare without her bow on her back. Her identity was tied to a bow and arrow. She didn’t want to tarnish her favored weapon in that way. Instead, Kate armed up with a few throwing daggers and a staff. A gun would have been just as useful considering Kate’s aim, but Zemo would never risk giving her such a powerful weapon. “What the fuck are we going to do?” Kate whispered to Kitty and Peter as they emerged from the van.

“That….that wasn’t me,” she said, taking a moment to lick her lips as she thought how to explain this. “I don’t know how but Zemo found a way to replace me or something. No one thinks I’m gone so no one thinks to look for me.” It was cruel and she hated it. Kate was just proof that it was working.

Kate could not wrap her head around it. She spoke with Kitty. How couldn’t she tell it wasn’t even her? How could no one tell? “I’m – I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry. Someone should have noticed.” She murmured her eyes staring down.

Kitty was hoping that she had been mistaken or her eyes were deceiving her, but no, it was really Kate. God, she hated Zemo more. “The mutant rally in New York.” She wasn’t sure exactly how long ago that was but she felt it was longer than she would like to think.

“No. No, I saw you just a few days ago.” Kate insisted as her brow scrunched in confusion. Recollecting her memories, she was positive Kitty had not been missing that long. People would of notice. She would have noticed.

Kitty threw the ball against the glass wall over and over, even as she heard the door to the cells open. She was really keen on seeing another person brought in. It was just a reminder that this was all a real hell and Zemo was winning. However she recognized the face of the person they drug in and was on her feet in an instance as she watched them put Kate in her cell. She waited for the goons to leave before banging on the glass to get Kate’s attention. “Kate! Kate!! Are you okay?”

Zemo sucked even more than she thought he did. Kate struggled and fought against the two armed guards. She was sure there were going to be bruises the shape of their hands on her shoulders. The cell they threw her in at least was nicer than the last one. This one had a bed, which she was content to lay on until hell froze over. But then, she heard her voice being called. Turning her head over, Kate’s eyes fell on someone she saw just the other day. “Kitty? When did you get here?”

Zemo let out a sigh hearing Kate’s retort back to him. Another one who thought it was a good idea to push his buttons. He figured he could get that stop at some point. One day they’d all be quiet and obedient, if he played his cards right. “Are you always this talkative after being beat?” he asked her. Leaning forward he looked her over, taking in the bruises that covered her. “Seems like my men did quite a job on you. Heard you even broke one of their noses.” he smiled. “Good, I would have been disapointed if you didn’t give a little fight back.”

A satisfied close-lipped smile graced her lips as he reacted her quip. At least she had some power in this situation; the power to annoy him. That was how she would stay alive in her, by slowly taking her power back, one insult at a time. As he took a moment to study her, Kate took a moment to study the room. No windows, one door, two chairs. Most interesting there were no keys on Zemo, which meant he had other goons here. How many men did he have? At the least five. “Usually, it’s part of my charm.” Kate purred as if she had total control of the situation. “You know, five lackeys in military gear is a bit excessive. Though, I suppose you have to make up for the lack of quality with quantity. Yet, it’s fitting. I mean someone with any skills would never work for you.”

It didn’t take long for his people to bring him his two new prizes. Peter had already woken up and had been moved to his cell, now it was time to explain everything to the next one. “When will she be awake?” Zemo asked, as he walked into the room. One of his men followed quickly behind him. Zemo’s eye’s travelled over towards Kate, tied up in chair and the two large metal cuffs already attached to her wrists. “We can give her something to speed up the process.” he told him. Giving him a nod of approval the man hurried over and gave Kate the next dose to wake her up. The room they were in was small and windowless. Most of the rooms where Kate was going to be kept was windowless. He had designed this place to keep all of them from knowing where they are. Turning around he could hear Kate finally stirring and he took a seat across from her. “Good morning Kate.”

The first thing Kate noticed was that she had a pounding headache. Immediately, Kate tried to clutch her head and that was when she felt the tight metal on her wrists, keeping her hands down. Futz. All the memories flooded back into her at once. Walking unarmed at night–stupid–five guys jumping her and knocking her out. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. As she started getting her senses together, looking around the room for some sort of way to get out, a familiar voice crept into her ear. Zemo. Of course, it was Zemo. Luckily, her sense of humor still hadn’t left her. Kate sarcasm seeped into her voice as she spoke, “Morning. Sorry, if I seemed a little startled there, I’m just used to waking up to much more handsome faces after night’s I don’t remember.”

Matt barely heard what Clint said to him. But he felt this hand on his, shivering by the contact but helping him to find an anchor to reality. But came back wasn’t the best thing to do, because it allowed him to think, to ask himself the wrong questions and to slowly let his anger appear. The purgers were dead, and from what he heard and felt they weren’t totally responsible for their actions. So his mind continued to think, to search someone to blame because it was easier than accepting the fact that fate or God could allow Claire’s death.  "So you knew?“ Matt finally asked and started to think in the wrong way. Convince people was his job, but let his anger help him to convince himself was a mistake. “You knew and…” Matt had a nervous laugh and let his voice trembled under his emotions. “You supervise this, did you? It’s… it’s what you’re supposed to do mhh?” He approached Clint and started to explain himself. “I could blame you… I could ask you few questions and…” He should stop himself, he knew it, deeply he knew but continued. “Because you knew how crazy were the streets, it’s your job. You knew that Luke was the only protection Claire had because you and Luke agreed to sent Kate to take his place. So you took the risk to put her life in danger by letting her alone.” Matt took a moment to breathe, to try to control his voice. “You know what is wrong with that Clint? It’s I know you. I know you’re used to work for the SHIELD, for the Avengers and I know you actually trained to evaluate the risks. So you probably evaluate the situation and you took the risk to let her die to save your ex-wife. I could blame you because in all your contacts you asked the single untrained man with powers to help you. I could ask you: why him? Why him but not someone like… I don’t know, Iron man, Thor, Captain America or even the Vision? Why not someone actually able to tell you that your decision was a mistake? Someone trained. Why did you ask a kid to take his place? Why did you do, not one, but all these stupid choices?! Why at any moment you or Bobbi Morse, also a SHIELD agent allow this to happen? Why people call you a hero when you put innocent lives in danger?” Matt stopped there but his fists showed he wasn’t calmed down. “I could convince a judge to make you lost your job for your selfishness.”

Clint sat there and took it. Let him be angry with him. Let him get it out. Luke’s brow furrowed and he stepped forward, reaching out to grab Matt while muttering his name but Clint shook his head at Luke. “No, let him. It’s fine.” He waited for Matt to finish, swallowing the lump in his throat. “You’re right, you could. You’re a good lawyer, Murdock. I could sit here and defend my actions. I could tell you exactly what I was thinking but the point is this - it won’t change anything. It’s not going to take your pain away. I tried everything I could do to handle the situation myself. Luke was the closest and I made a bad judgement call, and I’m sorry.”

When Matt turned toward Clint, Kate’s hand fell away from Matt’s as if she had been burned. His words stung even though they weren’t directed at her. Her mentor just took it, taking the blame so it would not be directed at her. She wouldn’t be pushed aside so easily, labelled as a kid with no responsibility. “Clint, shut up.” Kate spat out, “This isn’t your fault. It’s mine.” Turning back towards Matt, explaining herself. “I am not a kid. I’m a SHIELD Agent. Clint and Luke knew that and trusted me enough to protect Claire. They could have chosen anyone to come down here, but they picked me. I let them down. This is on me.”

Matt didn’t expect any words of what Kate was telling him, he couldn’t, he just… Shit, he didn’t know. He just looked so confused, his eyes looking everything without finding a light. He had no proof, no one to see, nothing to trust but words. Words and a regular heartbeat, hers, she wasn’t lying, she wasn’t lying, she wasn’t lying… “I…” He took a deep breath but didn’t calm down. “Claire is…” Matt closed his eyes, clenched his jaws, incapable to swallow. It felt so wrong, impossible to believe, not her, not Claire. In all this living hell, please not her. She couldn’t be gone, dead, worst murdered. “She…” She wasn’t his lover but she was a friend, a healer, a voice to listen, a pain in the ass, a hope, he loved her and she was gone? The tears started to run through his cheek. It felt so wrong, like a nightmare. “Oh god.” Matt took another deep breath but just looked more confused, looking all around him and losing the control. Where was the right? Where was the left? He let himself drown in his senses, forgetting how to hear, how to focus, letting the pain take the control. He was blind, blind like the first time he lost someone. He felt so weak, trapped in this nightmare, trapped in his condition, trapped in this pain ripping his heart. He wanted to wake up, to see something, to hear someone, to… to simply be able to sallow this information.

Clint let her speak, squeezing her shoulder reassuringly. “Hey, it’s not your fault,” he muttered, still watching Matt out of the corner of his eye. He knew that look - the denial slowly slipping into acceptance. It was a downward spiral and it would just keep going and going until Matt hit rock bottom. “I’m sorry Matt. I called Luke to get his help. Bobbi was stuck under a car. He wouldn’t have left if I hadn’t asked.” Was he shifting the blame off Kate so she could forgive herself and for Matt to get angry with him instead of her? Yes, yes he was.

Kate hated herself even more once she saw the look on Matt’s face. She did this to him. And Kate had to do something about it. Ignoring Clint’s words, she slowly made it up to her feet and began walking towards him. “Matt,” She croaked, her voice heavy with anguish and sorrow. Reaching out, Kate touched his hand. Holding on to it tightly, hoping to give him some sort of comfort. This made her very vulnerable if he was going to attack her, but Kate did not care. She deserved whatever hit he gave her. At least, like this, she felt she was doing something to help him. Offering whatever support she could, even if he rejected it.

“Yeah, long story.” He replied, not really comfortable with the idea of speaking of his implication in this mess, at least not without his mask. Matt sighed and tried to understand what this was all about. He spotted Kate and frowned at her sentence, it wasn’t just her words but her tone, her heartbeat, she seemed so nervous. “Is everything okay?” Matt asked but didn’t sit down. At her new reply, the blind man just looked more confused. “Of course… Take your time.” He said and took a deep breath, it wasn’t easy to switch in his lawyer mode with all this mess but he did. Matt was used to people who were about to confess something, it was his job and if this girl did something wrong, he was obviously ready to defend her if necessary. 

Clint didn’t doubt her, but still, he knew it was going to be hard and he didn’t want Matt to blame Kate. It wasn’t Kate’s fault and it wasn’t Luke’s either. When Kate took his hand, he squeezed it in a reassuring manner, telling her that he was there for her. “I’m sure it’s a good one.” He was sure Matt would tell him later when they weren’t surrounded by so many people and left it at that before sitting down next to Kate. He was turned towards her, but he was watching Matt out of the corner of his eyes, ready to read his expressions and jump in if he needed to.

Kate nodded once and took one more long steadying breath. Her hands shook. She focused on the floor in front of her and opened her mouth. The words rushed out like water breaking through a dam. “Luke told me to come down here to protect Claire, but I was too late. I got here and there were all these men and so much blood... by the time all the men were down and I got to her and I realized it was Claire. She was gone. They murdered Claire.” That was the first time Kate said it out loud. It still felt wrong on her tongue, even having seen it with her own eyes. Silent tears streamed down her face and her hands began shaking so intensely she clasped her hands together, trying to make it stop. Her voice was softer as she finished with a confession, “I should have been there. I could have saved her. It’s my fault, Matt. I’m sorry.”

Puting back his phone in his pocket, Matt was qualified about this phone call, not sure to understand why Luke asked him to come, even more strange, he asked Matt Murdock to come not Daredevil. It was weird but Matt obviously accepted and finished what he was doing in the mall before taking off the scarf from his head and going in the streets.

Fresh air forced him to take a deep breath but with all the noises and smells Matt could feel how fuck-up were his senses, this day will end with a big headache. 

Anyway, the blind man finally arrived with his bloody hands and bloody head from his precedent fight but thanks to this strange boy his wounds were nothing but superficials. He was “fine”, a bit bloody and without glasses but “fine”. “Matt.” Hearing his name, Matt titled his head in the direction of the voice and walked in its direction, a bit distracted by the smell of this place, this smell of blood. “Holy shit… you okay man?” “Yeah… Yeah, just dropped in a ben, not my first time.” Claire and Clint could be witnesses of that. “It probably looks worst than it is, trust me.” 

“Kate, you’re in no state to explain anything to anyone. You could barely tell me.” It wasn’t demeaning or anything. It was a fact and…well, Kate had seen enough. She didn’t need to see Matt’s face when the news broke. Plus, it would be easier to explain everything. He heard footsteps, though and saw Luke and Matt approach. No time to argue that point at all. He took a deep breath and sighed, “Alright, but if you can’t, I’ll be right here,” he said, getting up and helping Kate to her feet before approaching the two men. “Wind up in another dumpster, Murdock?”

“I’ll be fine.” She assured sternly, letting the words convince Clint–and herself–that she could do this. That was the last thing she was able to say before Luke and Matt approached. Taking Clint’s hand she stood up, hoping her knees wouldn’t shake as she walked forward and luckily, they didn’t. Her head still pounded, but compared to Matt she couldn’t complain. He looked like a mess. As Clint started the conversation, Kate’s eyes moved around the room making sure no one else was close. This was private. Glancing at Luke, they shared a knowing look of sorrow and guilt. She felt his sadness compound with hers and settle deep within her stomach. It weighed her to the moment. 

Looking back at Matt, she found the strength to start speaking. “I think we should sit down for this. That would be good.” The four of them were all tired and exhausted. Kate slowly sat down in her spot. For a moment, she rested her face in her hands taking one more deep breath, before speaking again. “I need you to be patient with me. I’ll explain everything now, I just need time to get the words out, okay?”

“Boss we have eyes on the archer.”

Zemo sat in a large office staring at the computer screen as he flipped through the street cameras. He wanted a good view of what was about to go down. “When you have your chance take it.” he ordered his men, taking his cup of tea off the saucer before leaning back in his chair. On the screen he saw Kate walking down the street, by herself. Perfect. A van slowly pulled down the street towards where Kate was walking. Once they got close enough to her, the door flung open and out ran five men dressed in full tactical gear. They charged at Kate, pushing her back into the alleyway. The four did their best to get control of Kate, while one of them held a large syringe in their hand. “Time for us to go on a little trip.” he said, trying to stick the needle into her neck. None of them wanted any mistakes to happen. They needed to get Kate tonight and they knew their boss was watching. It was do or die right now.

Kate didn’t notice anything was wrong till the sound of heavy boots slamming into the ground shook her back into the moment. The next thing she knew, four armed men were at her sides, pushing and pulling the archer into the closest alley. She tried to fight back the best she could, using all the dirty tricks to try and get free–scatching eyes, kneeing the groin, biting at hands. But as soon as she got free of one arm another grabbed on someplace else. There was no way to escape, but Kate still fought hoping at least she’d leave the men with bruises and pain. Her struggled ended, when one man pulled her hair forcefully, making Kate lift her chin up, exposing her neck. Swiftly, the needle entered her vein, releasing the drug into her body. The last thing she was able to do was elbow the man behind her who pulled her hair. She heard a satisfying crack as the point was rammed into his nose and then Kate passed out.
