Despite Naomi Watts’s best Princess Diana–channeling efforts—which included visiting the late royal in her sleep, wearing her actual clothing, and obsessing over archival footage—the Oscar nominee’s biopic about “the People’s Princess,” Diana, does not seem to have been embraced by overseas critics. In fact, ahead of the film’s U.K. release tomorrow, reviewers have taken to cattily tucking into the biopic as if it were sport. Below, a sampling of the reactions from the British press, which in all fairness to Watts, mostly take issue with the film’s script rather than her performance.
“I hesitate to use the term ‘car crash cinema.’ But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, [Diana] has died another awful death.” —The Guardian
