as someone who grew up in a part of Indiana that was basically a suburb of Cincinnati, this is accurate every time I hear it.

Various Verge/general Vapien design sketches. I was having trouble figuring out the general idea of what I wanted Verge's human form to look like, so I started with the alien version and drew the human version over it.

Also the development sketches for their spaceship. I wanted something kind of weird and organic in nature.

...perhaps this weekend I will finally get the Vapien design notes pulled together for the Species of the Triad. One step closer to making decisions on what kind of junk they have.

I remain dissatisfied with my Sigian design, and think I should go another round with that one. But Vapiens? I'm pretty solid on what I think they look like at this point.

Trying to come up with a species name for Battlepope and Bugaboo based on my xenobiological worldbuilding and I sort of based the female-appearing male sex on the faeder male thing that ruffs have going on, so I was sitting here going "Faedrans?" and I have

NO IDEA

how my brain skipped straight over "Ruffians" as a species name. Of course they are Ruffians. How could they be anything BUT Ruffians.

Thinking about body hair distribution on these guys...

Because both pregnancy and transitioning into a big fancy male involve growing a lot of new body hair—drab males and not-pregnant females have head hair and neck ruffs with a maximum follicle length and either don't develop or have very sparse wrist and ankle ruffs—the main ways to tell whether you're becoming a dude or just knocked up used to involve regularly checking to see if the clitoral structure is developing into a penis, and also whether you're growing toe-claws or boobs.

Fortunately, these days they have medical scanners. And pregnancy tests.

I suppose the Jaeger could just be called “Praise the Lord,” though one with a full government name that is “In the end, there can be no thing not praising him and deserving of his love,” that gets shortened to “Praising him,” would be very funny.

Effie claims to have built their Jaeger with scrap from the local junkyard in the early days of the “punch kaiju with giant robots” phase of this thing, and since her and Zebulon’s Jaeger looks like it’s about 90% scavenged tractor parts, people are inclined to believe her.

Rest of their diner crew is the support team they picked up along the way, starting with Caspar, who had his own “he looks up and sees a god/hero and that god/hero is Effie and Zebulon” sequence. Leif juices their Jaeger up beyond what Effie can herself, Ava provides Numbers, Gloria is really good at tactical support, and Caspar’s just kind of there because they saved his life except for the times he hops on Gloria’s comm to suggest some absurd bullshit that always works. (Eventually he and Gloria get their own Jaeger and engage in some of the most Yakety Sax Jaeger vs. Kaiju battles that have ever existed.)

Signing up for this AU roulette was a GREAT idea. (Writing a fic about Battlepope and Bugaboo, on the other hand, was not, because I do most of my writing on my phone and when I wrote battles in the paragraph above, my phone tried to correct it to Battlepope.)

me, yesterday: a reader-insert fic where you’re getting double-teamed by Battlepope and Bugaboo would be hilarious

me, less than 24 hours later, having abandoned the reader-insertness of the second person narrative within five paragraphs and now spiraling down into xenobiology hell: okay, so, let’s draw a chart of which sexes of Battlepope and Bugaboo’s species can transition into other sexes due to natural pressures and also a chart of which sexes bottom for the other sexes, and in cases of homosexual sex, let’s decide which pairings are typically for the purpose of building homosocial bonds and which ones are primarily mating displays, anyway, if we decide Battlepope is the big fancy male type and Bugaboo is the small drab male type that camouflages to blend in with females, which one of them is socially conditioned to expect sloppy seconds from their heterosexual sexual encounters, anyway?

I was not kidding about the chart.

The types of sex considered socially deviant in this society are:

High status big fancy males bottoming to anyone who isn't a higher status fancy male (high status as a male gives you the opportunity to top and not topping every time you can makes you lose status, why would you ever voluntarily sacrifice status for this)

High status females wanting to top (sometimes get forcibly transitioned to male now that they have the med tech to induce the natural transitions)

Drab males who only want to fuck other drab males (the gayest you can get, because if you want to top you're right in with the females and if you want to bottom there are fancy males right there, so why would you bother with a drab male unless you were engaging in deviant homosexual behavior)

Males of either type who want to exclusively bottom to females (so deviant they just pretend this type of sex doesn't exist, or at least they'd like to. except. there is porn.) (the porn is illegal.)

Seen as suspect but not deviant:

Low-status fancy male only ever bottoming to other males of either drab or fancy type (weird that they're not topping the drab males at least some of the time)

Females who are only interested in drab males and/or other females (weird that they don't want to contribute to the gene pool)

Females who only fuck fancy males (continues to be weird they don't want to contribute to the gene pool)

Drab males who only want to have sex with fancy males (also weird that they don't want to contribute to the gene pool)
