Ba-thum.

It had been there as long as she could remember. A strong slow heartbeat that rested just behind and below her own. No one else seemed to be able to feel it except for when her own heart was beating too fast. There had been an incident when she was seven, before San Francisco, where she had fallen off her bike and down a hill, breaking her arm in the process. She remembered how the EMS personnel were baffled and talking about having a second pulse, how her blood pressure remained steady even as she descended into shock.

Maddie also remembered all the tests that came afterwards too.

All those tests were the reason they were even in the city when the MUTOs came and brought death with them. The double heartbeat came and went as the tests were done, as her fear waxed and waned depending on the doctors and what they wanted to try this time. She had vague memories of an almost kidnapping and how her own heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest, the second beat almost burning with how hot it felt behind her own.

MONARCH eventually was brought in when normal doctors, regular doctors, couldn’t find anything wrong or if it was harming Maddie. She could have told them that it wasn’t hurting her, that she knew without a doubt that the fire-heart in her would rather die than hurt her. But no one listens to children, no matter how much they know.

Ba-thum.

Then… it happened.

San Francisco. The MUTOs. Godzilla. Andrew.

Maddie’s memory was spotty during those few days after the battle. The fire-heart in her chest became the only thing she could hear for hours, head throbbing and bleeding from her nose and ears. Her body felt like it was going to ignite, that she could become a star and burn away. It was almost two weeks before Maddie was coherent enough to talk. It took another week before anyone thought to tell her about Andrew.

After the battle was the first time that Maddie was afraid of the fire-heart. It had burned her from the inside out, white hot flames having licked around her own fragile one.

She remembered hearing screaming. She didn’t remember that it was her.

so @star-going-supernova has super inspired me to write my own Godzilla fics and i’m excited to get into a new fandom! i’ve read all their fics probably about a million times each in the past 2 weeks and i need to CREATE my own content so here i go!
