@ the people who asked me to explain, here’s a timeline:

1845-51 - ‘Scènes de la vie de bohème’ ('Scenes of Bohemian Life’ in English), written by French novelist and poet Henri Murger, is published, first in magazines and then as a novel. It’s a collection of loosely related, semi-autobiographical stories set in 1840s Paris romanticising the bohemian lifestyle (which basically means an unconventional lifestyle with very few permanent ties, often involving artistic pursuits).

1893-95 - Italian composer Giacomo Puccini composes 'La bohème’ (literally meaning 'Bohemian lifestyle’), a four act opera based on Murger’s work, set in 1830s Paris and showcasing the life of a poor seamstress and her artist friends.

1989-91 - Playwright Billy Aronson and composer Jonathan Larson begin collaborating on a musical based on Puccini’s opera, replacing the original setting with (at the time) modern New York. Larson would later title this 'Rent’ and ask Aronson if he could use the original concept and make the musical his own, dreaming of writing a rock opera “to bring musical theater to the MTV generation”.

1991-96 - Larson continues writing Rent, setting the show in the East Village Neighbourhood of Manhattan “amid poverty, homelessness, spunky gay life, drag queens and punk”. Larson also incorporated elements of his own 'bohemian’ lifestyle into the story, such as his poor living conditions and lack of financial stability due to being an artist.

1996 - Rent premieres on Broadway, exactly 100 years after the premiere of the original opera, and explodes in popularity. (Sadly, Larson would never get to see its success, as he died from an aortic aneurysm on the early morning of the first preview.)

~1997 - 17-year-old Lin Manuel Miranda and his then-girlfriend see Rent on Broadway, and Miranda is inspired by the modern rock sound of the musical. He cites this as one of his inspirations for writing 'Hamilton’, a musical about the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton which combines hip-hop/R&B with traditional showtunes.

2015 - Hamilton premieres on Broadway, and explodes in popularity, leading to it having a large internet fandom, especially on Tumblr.

2017 - Tumblr artist umbronydraws draws art for a Hamilton AU where founding father Thomas Jefferson is reimagined as a bisexual, trans, furry, anime- and jpop-loving, former drug dealer and cocaine addict, wearing a binder patterned with popular vocaloid Hatsune Miku’s face. At the time this art was well-recieved by the fandom, but would later be seen as cursed by the majority of the website due to the absurd nature of making LGBTQ headcanons for an undeniably bigoted historical figure.
