Positive self talk is important loves <3
Just finished reading the Handmaid’s Tale as a choice book for my AP English class. I recommend it to anyone who is into dystopian fiction, feminism, or psychology/sociology.
Every day is an opportunity to start anew.
If you aren’t where you want to be in you studies or any aspect of your life, make today the beginning and do something proactive to change your situation. It can be small, but every action makes a difference.
Recommendation for anyone else who enjoys reading: Station Eleven by Emily St. John - Mandel
My friend recommended Station Eleven to me back in August and I read it right away, but it has been in my thoughts lately because I am including it in my term paper for my English class. It’s a great read for winter break for anyone who is looking for something relaxing this week. My friend had to read it for a lit course in college and when he said it was dystopian fiction I almost wrote it off because I’m quite over the genre for now, but it is a refreshing addition to the genre. It will appeal to anyone who enjoys literature, theatre, music, or reading. I found that there wasn’t a dull moment, it was not hard to get into at all (in fact, I ended up staying up til 4 am reading it one night), and it gave me a lot of food for thought. If you end up reading it, send me a message and tell me what you thought!
Don't be discouraged by the deferral-- there's always still a chance. :) If you do anything else notable between now and the regular decision deadline (eg like a big community service project or your sports team wins a big championship or something), be sure to send it to them. Best of luck, and keep your chin up! :)
Thank you so much for your encouragement and advice! I have an additional recommendation that I think might strengthen my application so I am trying to think positively. The good news is that although Harvard is my top school, there are still many others I am applying to that are exciting.
I have never understood the true appeal of Hermione’s Time Turner until senior year.
I am taking two classes in the same period, working 20 hours a week, and in various musical groups in addition to that and I am convinced that there JUST ISN’T ENOUGH TIME!
Harvard Early Action
I received my letter from Harvard today concerning my early action application, and I’ve been deferred, meaning I am neither accepted nor rejected and will get a decision at the regular decision time in March. Obviously, I’m relieved that I wasn’t rejected, but at the same time, I feel like I will get my hopes up too high only to be rejected in the regular decision pool. Harvard is my dream school, and this is excellent motivation for me to keep working hard and achieving excellent things. Hopefully, I will be joining Harvard Class of 2020 in the fall, but if not, I will be happy and successful at whatever school I land at.
My Harvard Overnight
A few weeks ago, I spent two days and one night at my dream school, Harvard. Here are some highlights/things I’ve learned.
- Harvard students are very hardworking, but everyone I met had a certain sense of play that I have never seen elsewhere
- Insomnia cookies at midnight is always a good idea
- Harvard students don’t always understand the material right off the bat, but they do seem to know what questions to ask to find out what they need to know
- the first class I attended was a Spanish class, and the professor was so fun and passionate that I would definitely take a language if accepted
- Everyone there is incredibly talented in some way, but also very humble and they all know how lucky they are
- My friend that I stayed with said they were putting in an ice rink. I asked when and she said, “I don’t know. Things just seem to happen overnight here. People have ideas and then they execute their plans.”
Overall, it was a motivating and enlightening experience and I will definitely work even harder after seeing how incredibly hard my friends at Harvard work
I’m sorry I have been so absent, I have been applying to colleges and really focusing on my studies. I promise you will hear from me a lot more now!
Love you all! Thanks for your patience. I hope you are working hard and finding success also!

organization
do you like sticky notes? i do too!! stick them on the edges of your desk (or shelves if you have those) like this! [x] use them for reminders and w/e
lighting is more important than you think it is. keep the curtains/blinds open. get a lamp if your ceiling lights are horrible. (also, to lessen damage to your eyes, install flux.)
put whatever you want in your shelves, cabinets, etc. but keep the desk surface itself as free as you can!! you should have maximum space to work and less cluttered space = less cluttered mind
the most important supplies should be within arm’s reach
magazine files that can also hold notebooks/folders/papers (plain white, but you can decorate them yourself!!) (also this is the chinese ikea site because i live in china, so while everything’s in english the prices are chinese)
ikea’s paper&media organisers sections
don’t leave stray papers everywhere, use folders or bins or something
put your pens in containers and separate them by type (your staedtlers don’t belong in the same container as your ticonderoga pencils), it’s aesthetically pleasing too
stuff that should always be nearby: some paper (in a cabinet/organizer of some sort) and something to write with!! and it really depends, but also sticky notes for quick to-dos, tape of some kind, and whatever you own that is well-loved
if your workspace gets messy quickly, clean up at least once a week. if it’s messy as you’re reading this, clean it up to the point it is at least manageable and write down somewhere to clean it up in full later. do not just assume you’ll remember. write it down.
keep your old assignments somewhere — drawer, folder, wherever — bc they’ll probably be useful someday unless they’re like. from 6th grade
