Aren’t I adoooorable?
We really need to talk more about how children of mixed race, specifically POC+white, tend to get abused by their white family members.
Me personally, I'm Swedish (dad's side) and Caribbean (Mom's side). My paternal grandmother used to hit me with spoons, spatulas, and tree branches in an attempt to "knock the island" out of me. It took two years for me to finally tell my parents and we left town THAT NIGHT. I haven't seen Grammy since.
If you're willing to open up, add on to this post. We really need to talk about this more and expose the racism and abuse we faced.
There's an odd amount of fetishization that happens when you get raised by someone who just thought, "mixed race babies r so cute!!!" Or "x is exotic and that exoticism will pass to me if I have a baby with them or adopt a baby"
My parents were both Romani, but they were young and Certain Forces™️ decided I would be better off with an older white couple.
For years, my adopted parents showed me off as their little "g*psy baby" and had no qualms about dressing me in culturally insensitive outfits and parading me as a token of how supposedly woke they were.
When I was a teenager, they were upset that I was awkward and gawky like most teens??? They were visually upset that I wasn't an instant heartthrob for my classmates.
Over time, we began to communicate and realized and apologized for all they did, but there is always going to be some form of scarring from that, I think.
(I hope it's okay that I added on; I'm not mixed race myself, but I did have white adopted parents)
💯 addition, you can add on things like this too.
If you are a POC and faced stuff like this from white family members, no matter how you're connected to them, yes, you can add on!
Can white people reblog so long as we don't interrupt?
Yes! White people can and should reblog, thanks!
I'm fairly mixed—I'm Native American (Choctaw/Chickasaw/Cherokee/Patawomeck), Iraqi, and Scandinavian on my father's side and South Asian and German on my mother's side.
(My maternal family deny any South Asian heritage and I even got disowned for discovering that part of our lineage. They're white supremacists.)
When I was little, my brother and I went to classes to help us relearn our indigenous languages. We were some of the first kids offered those classes after Bill Clinton passed some act in 1993 that would help revitalize indigenous languages (can't remember the name of it, sorry).
After my mother and father got divorced and my mother (illegally) decided she deserved full custody and skipped state with us, our languages were banned. If we said a single word that wasn't in English, we wouldn't be allowed to eat.
In the beginning, I refused to unlearn my language and took to stealing food from school or even Albertson's in order to survive.
My maternal family hailed my mother as a "loving" parent and sooo patient to put up with "heathen" children.
(My paternal family had no idea we were even still alive, so we had no safe place to run to)
After awhile, she tried to convince us we weren't NDN at all and that dad had lied about it in an attempt to seduce her??? And her mistake with that was that everyone knew that we actually were because we didn't "look quite white" and I got asked a lot if Mom bleached my skin to make me look white and to tell her "it wasn't working."
There's a lot more I could go into with this, but long story short, I know that feel fam.
