Zalgo: The Devourer Beneath the Roots
Long before the forest, before Slender claimed dominion, before the Operator’s sickness spread through mind and machine, there was him.
Zalgo, the Broken King, the Devourer, the first god of corruption. Where he moves, reality frays. Where he whispers, flesh quivers, and words melt into madness. He is not content to remain trapped beneath the roots of the forest; he hungers. Always, he hungers.
The Grudge Against Slender
Legends say Slender was once the only being capable of containing him — a warden, a pale, tall entity that learned to hold back Zalgo’s chaos. Slender didn’t destroy Zalgo, but sealed him away beneath the forest that would become Rosswood. To Zalgo, this is theft. Every victim Slender claims is a stolen prize, every proxy a denied sacrifice, every attempt to maintain order a personal insult. His hatred is patient, meticulous, endless.
The Zalgoids: Children of Hunger
Zalgo does not move alone. He spawns Zalgoids, smaller, weaker demons that act as extensions of his will. They come in two forms:
Born Zalgoids – the direct spawn of Zalgo himself, born of his corrupted essence and human followers. They are grotesque, malformed shadows of his own form: extra mouths, twisted limbs, and eyes that burn like hot coals. They are few, but instinctively loyal, carrying fragments of Zalgo’s hunger wherever they go. However, sometimes on rare blood moons when a child is born, instead of disgusting soldiers beautiful angel like babes are born in blood. Their only true role to one day be a meal for their father.
Cult-Made Zalgoids ,crafted by the devoted cult known as The Thirteenth Mouth. Using human sacrifices, rituals, and cannibalistic rites, the cult fuses bodies and blood into something not quite human, not quite divine. These Zalgoids are weaker than the born ones, but they are numerous, obedient, and often entirely insatiable.
Cannibalism is central to their creation. Each new Zalgoid is fed with flesh, sometimes their own, often from victims of the cult’s sacrifices, to strengthen the bond between Zalgo’s essence and mortal form. Survivors whisper that cultists sometimes eat their own when a Zalgoid must be “completed” or “awakened.”
The Thirteenth Mouth has never truly disappeared. Hidden among the ruins outside Rosswood, they maintain shrines and secret altars, smearing walls with blackened sigils and chanting through the nights. Their rituals attract Zalgoids to Rosswood, testing Slender’s containment. Every proxy lost, every page scattered by the forest, every sickness spread by the Operator is a step closer to breaking the seal.
They do not care for the townsfolk. They care for Zalgo’s return, and for feeding his hunger. Every sacrifice is a seed for a new Zalgoid, every corpse a promise that he grows stronger. They whisper of cannibalistic feasts not as horror stories, but as sacred acts, believing that human flesh carries fragments of soul — the perfect vessel for Zalgo’s corruption.
Zalgo’s hunger is patient. He waits for cracks in Slender’s control, for mistakes in the containment. His Zalgoids prepare the way. His cult feeds the fire. And when he finally rises, it will not be merely to devour the forest or Rosswood itself — it will be to consume the world that Slender dared to claim.
