The Vampira Show - 1954
So much awesomeness in my new shower curtain that I couldn’t capture it all but it’s so beautiful!
Title: Mystery Date Artist: Mitch O’Connell
DID YOU KNOW that Maila Nurmi actually inspired Morticia’s design in the 1964 Addams Family TV show?
At a Halloween party in 1953 hosted by Lester Horton, Nurmi went dressed as Morticia Addams from Charles Addams’ original comics. She caught the attention of TV producer Hunt Stromburg Jr. who wanted to have her host a TV special where she dresses up as a spooky vixen and tells scary stories.
Here’s a pic of Nurmi at said Halloween party:
After the party, Stromburg had no idea how to contact her and when he finally found her number, he had her set up to host The Vampira Show in 1954. Subsequently, her look for Vampira inspired David Levy, creator of the Addams Family TV show in 1964, to design Morticia’s character to look more like Vampira, and less like Charles Addams’ comic character of Morticia who had an entirely different hairstyle and physique.
Actually there is currently no released pictures of Nurmi at the Bal Caribe where she debuted Vampira. This picture was taken at a Halloween party after the death of James Dean. Nurmi was dressed as a witch because a magazine ran a story that Nurmi was a witch that had cursed and killed James Dean because Dean rejected her romantic advances. This of course was untrue. Dean and Nurmi were friends but never anything more and while Nurmi implied an interest in the supernatural she was never anything like a practicing witch.
“An image of Maila Nurmi as Vampira taken in 1955. It is a part of a huge collection of vintage LAPD crime scene pictures unearthed by photographer Merrick Morton in 2014.”
I think, from memory, this was part of the “"night mayor” promotional pictures she did to drum up interest locally in the Vampira Show.
