Kanae & Shinobu are no strangers to taking in a child. They've done it once before with their loving sister, Kanao, yet something was different with you. The two of them came across you when they were on assignment. A demon had been reported in the west, up near the mountains resulting in a string of slaughters.
"Oh, how unfortunate to hear. I'd say we'd better get going then, right Shinobu?"
"We'll slay the damned demon in no time, Master."
The two are quick to set off on their journey having taken a few days to arrive near their location. It was nighttime by the time they do so, which is when a scream rang out through the wood surroundings. The scream put the two on high alert, immediately the two ran towards the source of the sound.
As the two approached the house, they saw a demon on the doorstep, eating away at a now dead woman's forearm. The demon seemed to be distracted by the woman's taste, only ending in it's own decapitation by the older Kocho.
Kanae was rather surprised that a demon was caught off-guard so easily, but Shinobu only said that the demons had the same intelligence as that of a fish and that Kanae shouldn't be so surprised. The young woman sighed and looked down to the fading body of the demon beneath her feet.
"Perhaps, Dear Sister, however you and I both know that is not true."
Shinobu puffed her cheeks, but said nothing else. The thought occured to Kanae to check the home for any survivors. When she looked up the steps she saw that the the sliding door was ajar. Seeing this she gained the hope that there was a survivor, even if only one.
It didn't take long for the sisters to find you. The heartbreaking muffled sobs were quite evident, coming from a closet. Kanae remembered when her and her sister had been in this situation and it tugged at her heart. It took a moment for Kanae to approach the closet door, unfreezing after Shinobu snapped her out of it.
"Hello? Child? You can come out now; you're safe."
Her voice was calming and kind as she coaxed you out of your hiding spot. The door slid open slowly, revealing your teary eyes to the sisters. Kanae kneeled down to your height with a kind smile on her face, holding her hand out to you.
"It's alright, we won't hurt you...My name is Kanae Kocho." She had gestured back to her sister who stood beside her. "And her name is Shinobu."
It took a little bit to succeed in coaxing you out of your hiding place, but it worked nonetheless. You crawled out of the closet, looking to be no older than six. Shinobu observed your quaking body and pitied you. She knew what it was like to lose a guardian, and she knew what you were feeling, however she wasn't too sure what Kanae wanted to do on this situation, but she had an inkling it would be a similar solution to one previously.
"Dear, we regret to inform you, but your guardian has passed on. You will have to accompany us from here on out."
"What?! Kanae, we already-"
When Kanae looked up to Shinobu, Shinobu shut her mouth and huffed once again. She knew that Kanae wanted to save others from their own tragic fate, but adopting every child they come across? They already had one child to take care of, but two was too much. ( ha get it? ) // ( Kill me please /j )
It takes awhile for Shinobu to get close to you, but after countless nights of cuddling up with both her and Kanae and Kanao, she eventually grows close to you and insists on you laying by her futon. Kanae doesn't mind this, happy that Shinobu had taken a liking to you.
When you're older and have the potential to gain suitors//suitresses(?) , Shinobu tends to chase them off, believing you need her and her sisters only, however Kanae is the opposite. She pushes for you to find a suitor out of love, wanting you to be happy outside of the life of a demon slayer.
After Kanae was killed while on mission, Shinobu forbid you from becoming a slayer, resulting in you becoming a part of the Butterfly Children. You took care of Demon Slayer's, but did not partake in the missions. However, before Kanae's passing, she had taught you her breathing style. Whenever Shinobu was gone, you were there to protect the younger Butterfly Girls. But, if Gyomei were off of assignment for once, she would leave the five/six of you with him. Afterall, she trusted him, especially since he had taken both her and Kanae in all those years ago.
When the Kamado Siblings arrive at the Butterfly Mansion, she is not too thrilled to have a demon within her walls, but makes peace with it considering Ubayashiki himself had permitted it. She tells you to tend to the boy, but not to get too close to the box he keeps with him.
However, you didn't listen and became quite friendly with the younger Kamado, knowing her now as Nezuko. Shinobu wasn't thrilled with this discovery, but couldn't find it in herself to punish you. If there is ever a day you become too friendly with a certain sibling, however, she will not hesitate to deny him entry at her doorstep.
I am so sorry to my lovely requester for taking so long on getting this out! I had to gather a lot of motivation for this, having thought that I could dive head first into writing a oneshot/drabble about one of the (in my opinion) most complex characters in Demon Slayer. Turns out I was wrong lol
I know that there wasn't much Yandere!Kanae (considering I kinda killed her off a bit early in the story) But I do think this turned out better than I expected it too when I first started!
