So I'm re-listening to Gideon the Ninth, and noticed for the first time that while Canaan House is VERY tall, even counting the hatch rooms there's tons of floors they can't access.

And it's on earth.

And the sum total of necromantic transgression etc etc.

What if Canaan House IS the Tower?

The story is 100% not done with Canaan House. It’s too significant to the narrative as the place where not only the Eightfold Path was created but as the place Harrow and Ianthe ascended as well. Also, both Harrow and Palamedes were able to create their bubbles in the River out of pieces of the spiritual copy Canaan House.

If it is The Tower, it may also be allusive to the Tower of Babel on some level. In the original story, the Tower of Babel is of course where humans attempted to build in order to reach God and talk to him, only to have the tower be destroyed by God as punishment for their hubris. Famously, the myth is used to explain why we all speak different languages; after the Tower came down, everyone spoke different languages.

John Gaius, as we learn in NtN, is a form of Lyctor, just with an entire planet and not “just” another person. If you look at Lyctorhood through this lens, Canaan House becomes the place where humans (the OG lyctors) tried to reach God. They were punished for this in several ways (the death of their cavaliers and the guilt that followed, being hunted by the Resurrection Beasts). As far as language goes, a lot has been written already about the strange lack of linguistic drift in the Nine Houses; Gideon as a Ninth House ascetic was able to read a note written by an OG lyctor, etc. Their language has yet to come apart (if you ignore the non-Houses humans).

It’s a tenuous connection but something to think about. All this is to say: Canaan House isn’t done in the story yet. There’s also the fact that Alecto returning to the First House at some point is inevitable imo.

Perhaps an underrated bit of Tamsyn Muir cleverness is Augustine being so open and (sarcastically) eager for his “biography interview” with Harrow in HtN. Saint Augustine of Hippo, likely Augustine’s namesake, is largely known for his autobiography “Confessions”, in which he discusses his past wrongdoings before his conversion to christianity! This bit of theology is directly referenced in Augustine being so willing to entertain Harrow (though I suspect his in character motivations was largely the hollow mockery that he relies so heavily on) and especially in the way he talks about Alfred. He’s the one that chooses to bring up his cav; while he claims it’s out of feigned respect for Cytherea’s tradition, I heavily suspect that it’s because he feels guilt over Alfred’s death still and thus cannot discuss himself and his sainthood without bringing up Alfred- Saint Augustine must confess his sins.

Thinking over The Locked Tomb books and I love how clear it is that Thanergy, the magical death fuel for necromancy, is an inherently unsustainable energy. It’s meant to be this transitory little spark, a quick byproduct of the transition to death. Analogous to the way an actual fire burns out.

But it’s being artificially extended and induced in the entire solar system by one guy whose massive distaste for change is keeping everything held together and alive even when it totally shouldn’t be.

Just really appreciate how “necromancy as a rejection of change” is apparent in even the basic foundations of how the magic works.

this is also expressed in the way lyctorhood works! the lyctors are all shown to be haunted by their cavaliers, forever altered and changed! the only way to gain a near infinite source of thanergy is to bind someone to you forever in an inherently unbalanced exchange. lyctors don’t grow old, they don’t change. they are alive when they shouldn’t be because they have made it impossible for themselves to move on.
