Guess who finally got back around to writing whump? Well, rewriting whump. I massively revamped an Endeavour story I wrote back in 2018, but don't worry, I kept all the whumpy goodness of the first version.

Hello and thank you for signing up to be a part of my writing event! It means so much that you all care enough to do so. Whenever I figure it out, I am going to message you with another blog’s writing routine. At which time you can then find a day you have off or free, and try and write like the other blogger for the rest of the day. You can take photos, give updates once an hour, make a video, or just a long post of a giant review of the person’s style. Feel free to tag the person who you’re writing like as well as me so I can try and help boost the post! Please be kind in your posts about the other person. What works for them may not work for you, and that’s ok, but don’t ever attack the person or their style.

Before we start though, I just need confirmation that you as an individual understand others' writing routines are different than your own, and that’s ok! If there is an issue after you’ve received their routine and for some reason, you just can’t bring yourself to do it, please let me know right away. I’d like everyone to participate in this event and don’t want anyone’s routines left out, so I can switch them around.

The only other thing I’d like to point out is this. There’s a lot of information left out. Most routines only have one time where I mentioned eating, but please eat to a normal consistency you usually do, and if you don’t eat in the mornings but the other person does, go ahead and skip it. The same goes for drinks! Don’t dehydrate yourself, it’s 100% ok to bend the rules to keep yourself healthy or accountable. Like bedtimes, if you usually go to bed at 12 and someone goes to bed at 4, you can stay up late but don’t force yourself awake until 4 AM unless you want too. And a lot of you have pets, please take care of them!! The point of this is just to try different writing times, and locations, and see if there’s some more inspiration bubbled up inside you that you can bring out.

Plantser and chronological?

Plantser : What is the first thing you do when you start working on a new WIP?

I usually make an outline, separated out by chapter (if it's got chapters). Just a vague idea of where I want the story to go so I don't end up in a totally different direction than I had planned.

And if I started the WIP based on some opening line that got stuck in my head, I'll write that down right away as well so I don't lose it.

Chronological : Have you ever gotten stuck with a scene? If you have, how do you power through and finish?

All the time. So typically what I'll do is look at my outline (see above lol) and think about what I need to do in the scene to get to the next plot point. This usually means making another outline just for the scene, one that's more detailed and is almost a line-by-line synopsis minus all the detail and in the most slang-ridden, informal language I can manage.

And if that fails I'll skip it and come back to it later.

I really wish people who asked for instructions how to do a thing didn't also feel the need to explain why they need the instructions because I'm super happy to tell anyone how to filter stuff out of their ao3 search results, but so often I end up uncomfortable or insulted or taken aback when I could have been saved that reaction if the person had just stopped talking after asking their question.

Not-so-good: Can you help me filter out stories that are shorter than 3000 words because I hate short fics and half the time the people who write them are really bad and I just get really annoyed when I have to scroll past them all the time

I love short fics and I encourage people to write them and I love writing them myself. You really didn't need to insult me (unknowingly) to my face while asking me for a favour, y'know?

Anyway, if you want to filter out fics that are shorter than 3000 words, use the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filters menu and type in words>3000

I Tried Writing Like... Daily Updates!

6 people (including myself haha) filled out the form today and I wanna share some cool facts about it!

The average word count for each written-out routine is 333 words! With a total word count ending up at 1,657 words!

Tea wins today at 3 v 2 for the favorite morning drink!

2 people said they like to start at 7:30 AM!

Writing at a desk wins over writing in bed or on a couch!

5/6 people agree afternoon writing requires music!

Chips or Popcorn are the Nightime snack winners!

Some quick great quotes that I love! "Make sure that whoever you live with understands that this is a day for you. Yes, you'll be getting other things done throughout the day, but if you live with someone talkative or attention-seeking, avoid them as much as possible. You deserve to be allowed to concentrate." and one more! "if you find yourself getting stuck make a drink and listen to some music !!! make the schedule work for you; don't make yourself work for the schedule !"

UPDATE 2!!! (FINALLY) June 26th

7 people filled out the form today!

The average word count for each written-out routine is 230 words! With a total word count ending up at 1,613 words!

Isn't it frustrating when the perfect whump happens only it's for the wrong character? I particularly hate it when they hint that someone is going to get hurt but don't tell you who and you get your hopes up and it turns out not to be them.

oh my gosh yes! I hate when that happens! Even worse when you've chosen a character that the fandom hates so not only do you not get canon whump but you won't get fanon whump either. So sad.

If you want to filter out oneshot collections (fics that look like multichaps but are actually a series of oneshots posted as chapters of the same work) from your search results on AO3:

Start by tapping on whatever tag you want to read. That will take you a page full of results where all of the works use that tag.

Tap on the Filter button at the top of that list of fics. This will open up the filter menu.

Scroll down to the bottom of that sidebar and find the box called Search Within Results

In that box type -oneshot* AND -drabble* AND -ficlet*

Then press the button labelled Sort and Filter

You will now have works with that tag that do not have the words oneshot, oneshots, drabble, drabbles, ficlet, ficlets in their title, summary, tags, or author's notes.

If you still want to see oneshots that are actually one 1 chapter long (or fics that have only 1 chapter posted so far), you'll need to have a second browser window open for the tag :(

To filter for oneshots, do all of the steps above, but at step 4 type this instead expected_number_of_chapters:1

False Roulette and Fake Executions

There’s not enough love around here for playing false roulette or hosting a fake execution, two of my favorite whump tropes, so I threw this together!

False roulette is traditionally played when the victim thinks there’s one bullet in the gun, but it’s actually empty. Their opponent then pulls the trigger for every wrong answer until there’s only one left … and it’s empty too.

Fake roulette is a form of a false execution, usually, where the victim thinks they’re gonna die, but then they don’t.

The point for both comes down to scaring someone into think they’re in mortal danger, when actually there’s no danger at all.

So have a list of my favorite methods!

- Classic: palm the bullet instead of putting it in the gun and start asking questions

- Fire the gun, but whoops! forgot to put the bullet in! Let’s try again, shall we?

- Hold a bottle, metal ruler, or other object mistakeable for something deadly to their back

- Use a double headed coin. “Tails I shoot you, heads I don’t, okay?’

- Blindfold them and “use them for target practice”

- Blindfold them and put them in a “room full of deadly animals” (or bees, a room full of bees)

- Or actually put them in a room full of these assumed deadly animals or their most feared animal but they’re harmless (snakes, bees, spiders, ect)

- Fake bombs

- Give them or someone they love a “poison” and only promising the antidote after they get what they want

- Give them a drug that mimics symptoms of an anxiety attack or something deadly

- Convince them they killed someone/tortured someone

- Convince the prisoner they’re eating their best friend/loved one

- Threatening to push someone into a deep pool/river … that’s only knee height

- Rising water/encroaching fire/other danger getting progressively closer

- Dunk them in a pool of that breathable water stuff. Watch them hold their breath until they figure out they can breathe, then the pain of breathing real air once they come out.

- Fake hanging

- False abandoment

- Give ‘em one last wish before they die and fulfill it. Watch them savor this last thing …

- Let them call/write a letter to their team/loved one to say goodbye before the fake execution

- Or refuse to let them call

- Make them want to die … then refuse to kill them

- Someone faked their death, or had it faked for them, and everyone believes it

- A teammate/loved one appears to switch sides and betray them, but they didn’t

- Augmented/virtual reality

- “Dude, according to the internet, those berries you just ate are poisonous. You’re gonna die in 24 hours.”

- Misdiagnosis from the internet in general

- Spider bites or snake bites that may or may not be poisoned

- “The asteroid with collide with your hometown in eight hours …”

- They’re lost deep in the wild forest, except that can’t tell there’s a town just few kilometers over

also consider: faux execution that is streamed live to their team/others, but cut the stream just when it’s revealed it’s fake to have them believe that whumpee is dead? double whammy of hitting the team hard and convincing them there’s “nobody left to save” and convincing the whumpee help will not come!

A very public capture or showing, where they force the whumpee to kneel and put a gun to the back of their head, then ask:

“Any last words?”

The whumpee could be silent, or they could think of something on the spot. Do they accept the situation with dignity and in good grace? Or do they totally break down, begging them not to do this?

They prepare themselves for the shot that will never come, the deep exhale they take when they hear the click and realise they’re still alive.

Or if you want to be really cruel, have them watch another prisoner be executed for real before them, so they actually think they’re going to die.

This idea comes from a discussion with @pythagoreanwhump so credit to them for everything I just said.

Whumpee tortured for information, beaten inches from death. Only once the gun is turned on an innocent person do they spill everything they know. (Bonus points if the innocent person is Whumpee’s loved one)

Once their torturers are sure Whumpee is telling the truth, they’re patched up and released from captivity.

When Whumpee gets back to their organization, they’re not sure what to expect. Maybe a celebration, a “hey we’re glad you’re not dead and we totally understand that you didn’t have a choice”, something.

They did not expect to be treated like an enemy. They did not expect to be shoved into a small, bare holding cell, roughly searched for trackers or mics.

Their team treats them like a traitor, which Whumpee assumes is what they are now. They are left alone for days on end, not given any food, barely enough water.

When Leader finally comes to visit, Whumpee is thin, pale and sweaty. Maybe one of their wounds got infected, or dehydration is just getting to them.

They look at leader with sad, desperate eyes, silently begging for help.

Leader just glares down at them, and kicks them hard in the ribs.

(Extra bonus points if Whumpee’s “loved one” from earlier was someone on the team, OR MAYBE EVEN LEADER THEMSELF, and it completely breaks Whumpee)
